So, it made me so mad the other day....
I'm sitting at a swim meet next to some guys, one of whom points to an over-weight man (probably 350 pounds) and says:
"That guy needs to go on an all liquid diet"
WTF? Since when does an all liquid diet help you lose significant weight? And how is that even GOOD for you? The guy who said it is pretty skinny, but he's got stuff he could lose (including his attitude).
Sorry... just a rant. Has anyone else experienced similar WTF?! moments?
Ugh, yeah, I had a doctor suggest that to me once. It was about 900 cals a day. I weighed about 180 (5'4" female) at the time. I didn't do it. Especially since the next thing he said was "we'll have to watch your gall bladder real close though, it may have to come out if you lose real fast". You've got to be kidding. My therapist told me that she used to be involved in one of these medical liquid diet programs and that almost all the patients gained back all the weight once they went back to real food. Imagine that.
One purpose behind an all liquid diet is to allow the stomach in an extremely overweight person to shrink up so that they'll feel more full when they start eating food again. While the all liquid diet might not be "good" for you, neither is being 350#. Many of the all liquid diets like Medifast are physican supervised. Without knowing more about the person making the comment, it's hard for me to judge.
I LOVE when people try to tell me what to eat. I have a really strict diet (vegan/bad food allergies) but I eat a really diverse diet! My brother is going to school for exercise science and he discusses what's 'healthy' regarding diet while he smokes half a pack of cigarettes.
I went to an endocrinologist that had a program where it was an all liquid diet for so many weeks then you started eating real food eventually when she told me to do this i was like "whatever and walked out and never went back to her again" she was a so called professional but yet never even asked me about my diet etc...i guess she assumed i ate nothing but junk food etc....an all liquid diet may work for a couple weeks but you would get bored!! It's all about a lifestyle change, eating less and moving more. I would tell that guy to get a life. I assume he is skinny and doesn't have problems huh?
Clarice
I've done it for less than two weeks. 900 cals of mostly protein shakes and milk mixed with a fibre/omega fatty acid/vitamin supplements. Is it healthy? Probably not. Does it work? Hell yes. I'd be on it right now using some kind of psmf diet, but I don't have the mindset to go through that hell again. Your always tired and your always hungry. Whole foods really keep you full much longer.
In two weeks I lost around 15 pounds. If I look at the calorie deficit some 8 pounds was fat/muscle, but mostly fat from the changes that I saw. The water comes back, but the fat is as hard to gain as it normally is.

It amazes me how many doctors know so little about nutrition. You would think it would be a prerequisite. It also surprises me how many smoke and are overweight! "Do as I say and not as I do mentality.
My husband, who is 50lbs overweight, said in the mall the other day, "Eww, babe, look at her. She should not wear that tight of crap with a body like that." and I looked at him like WTF are you talking about?! I used to be that womans size and I probably wore tighter clothes because I didn't realize how bad I looked! I couldn't believe how shallow he was being!
But yeah, there is a girl in my office that goes on every 'fad' diet out there to lose weight... and then bounces back, binges and goes into the same cycle. It's depressing. I tried talking to her about nutrition but she says "All I want to do is be skinny, and I'll do whatever it takes" and I'm thinking- it takes listening to me honey! haha, oh well, she'll learn.
It does amaze me how ignorant doctors can be though, geesh, ya know what we pay those people?
Ha! I work with a doctor who drinks Coke all day long and is overweight and she tells people to lose weight because they are too 'fat'! Some are smaller than what she is!! I feel like saying "well you should set the example!" doctors should know better but obviously not! I reckon most of us on here know more about nutrition that alot of doctors do ![]()
