Counting Olive Oil Calories when Cooking

Quote  |  Reply

How do you count olive oil calories when you cook with it? Sometimes I cook up some veggies or chicken in a frying pan with a little olive oil. Say, I use 2 tablespoons of olive oil. I don't want to count both tablespoons when much of it is still in the pan after I eat. Any suggestions?

after you eat, measure how much was in the pan and then subtract from the original amount maybe?

I always count all of it just in case, sometimes its better to over estimate

Personally, I think something like this depends on how precise you need/want to be and whether you'd rather estimate over or under.  If you use 2T and don't count it all, and you don't know how exactly how much you ate, your figure will be off one way or another.  Same is true if you use 2T and count it all but don't eat it all.  You also can't really reliably count what is left in the pan, particularly after sauteeing veggies, in particular, because depending on how long you cook them, some of what is left in the pan will be water that has cooked out, mixed in with the pan oil.  If you caramelize them to the point that all water has cooked out/evaporated,  all your oil has absorbed, and there is nothing left in the pan but trace oil, I'd personally go ahead and count it all just to be on the safe side.  You could try prepping your pan with Pam and then also using oil but decreasing your oil to 1T, and just count it all, and see how that works.  It's never going to be an exact count.  Just estimate as closely as possible in the direction you feel most comfortable.  For example, if you overestimate everything else you eat on purpose, you could probably get away with counting 1T when you use 2T, if you see that you aren't consuming all of it.  I'd personally use 2T and count 2T or figure out a way to use less to begin with, but that's just me.  You could always use 2T and count 1-1/2 if you have some left in the pan.  That'd probably be as reasonably safe and accurate as possible in that situation, unless you see that you have a LOT left in the pan, which might mean you didn't really need 2T for the job.  :-)

I would just count it all. It's better to overestimate, I think.

Use less oil and count all of it!

Well what i do is, whatever i use i divide by the number of ppl Im cooking for.

SO if Im cooking for my OH and me, and i use 2 tsp of olive oil. I log one =)

If i only use 1tsp I log .5 tsp for me.

2T is A LOT of oil.  Why not just pam, or even 2T of water to cook your chicken in.  You really dont need the oil, but if you do want to use it i suggest using between 1tsp and 1T.  A little oil goes a long way.
