So for my summer job I work at a Wendy's. I work pretty long shifts, usually 8-10 hours each. I get one 15-minute break each time I work, just long enough to hit the bathroom and get something to eat. Problem is, I get thirsty while working. Drinks are free, so I can have as much water, iced tea, pop as I want, but I only get one break! I can't drink as much fluid as I want to (and should) because I won't get to use the bathroom. Occasionally, if we are slow, the managers will let you run to the bathroom, but it is really terrible to have to go when there are 6 cars lined up in the drive thru. So my question is this: am I going to screw up my body if I let myself get a bit dehyrdated while working? I don't want to stop drinking water, just cut back on the amount while I'm working. Anyone ever been in this situation before?
I do not no your habits, medical problems, age, weight ect, but if you think your are drinking and peeing more often than you should, see your doctor or bring it up at your next visit. Aside from that, here are some ideas.
Make sure you go to the bathroom before work. Stand in front of the toilet (or sit on it if you are female), even if you don't think you need to go. You'd be surprised how often at least a little something comes out (don't try to force it, though). That should help you make it a little further in the day. On top of that, avoid anything with caffeine before or during your shift (coffee, coke, diet coke, even tea). Caffeine makes you have to pee more often. Dehyrdation can really run you down and it is not all that good for your system. It's also a bad idea to hold it in for a long time. If your manager is understanding I would talk with him and see if there is anything you could do to get a couple of minutes a few hours after lunch but before the dinner rush.
