Hi all,
I am 187 pounds, 5'11''. For about 3 months, I was running at a medium to slow pace for a long distance. I would run for 1h to 1h15mins. Recently I tried a new running style after I heard that interval running is somehow better with weight loss and building speed and stamina. So I would run at a normal pace for 8mins, then run as fast as I can for another 40secs and then run at a slowww pace or walk(if I am too tired) for the next 1-2mins. I would repeat that until I get to the 1h mark.
Which style you think fits me better? feel free to suggest improvements to any of the above 2 styles. My plan is to get to 175-170pd
They are both good, but the key is to mix it up. The logic behind the interval running is that it burns more calories because you are alternating walking & running. If you are running everyday at the same pace you are going to stop losing weight because your body will get used to it. You should alternate running styles and add in some new cardio. Maybe get a bike and go on a bike ride 2 times a week.
I agree with mixing it up. I have "short" days when I only do 30-40 minutes of interval type running and then on my "long" days I try to just keep a good pace and go for an hour or so. I still can't jog the entire time, but I'm working on it :).
I have heard that the intervals really help you get faster and build up your stamina more quickly than simply doing the steady run.
I've been using www.polarpersonaltrainer.com to help me put together workout schedules. For my stats and goals I do 2 "normal" runs (40 min) a week, one "long" run (1 hr 10 min), and one "interval" run (30 minutes).
I have read several places that "long & easier", "fast paced but steady", and interval routines all have a place in both running and any cardio program.
