Diet Sodas? Water? Caffiene?

Quote  |  Reply

Do diet drinks make you retain weight? I have heard mixed reviews about this. Also does caffiene do the same? And I have heard that water makes you lose and I heard water makes you gain? What do ya'll think?

Water is the ideal drink.... no salt, no sugar, no gas, no nothing... and being well-hydrated makes sense when you're losing weight as it boosts your metabolism and keeps your digestion flowing freely.   Drinking water does not make you gain weight.  An occasional glass of diet Coke or a cup of coffee or tea won't interfere with your weight-loss either.  However, if you drink excessive amounts of caffeinated or carbonated drinks you can get problems with bloating, dehyration, palpitations...

diet drinks are just really not good for you. Those chemicals you put in your body have no benefits. When i cut out diet drinks i dropped 10 lbs quite fast. I think it had something to do with the carbonated water. I drink only water now and i do not gain. It flushes your system out and makes you feel so much better. I drink caffeine every now and then and have not retained either.

If you need that fizzy fix, go for some mineral/sparkling water and if you need flavor squeeze some citrus into it.

I find I like it more than regular soda anyway.

I had a hard time dropping diet soda's too but when I did, it showed on the scales. I now have decaffinated unsweetened ice tea and use a small amount of Splenda, I also sometimes treat myself to lemonaid from water, lemon and Splenda but by far your best friend is  WATER, WATER, WATER !!!

I find that when I drink diet soda (say, a bottle or two in a day) I suddenly have this "unexplainable" weight gain and feel horribly bloated. As a matter of fact, that happened to me this past weekend. I had a good liter and a half over two days and Monday morning I was up 3 pounds. It stuck around until yesterday, and I finally drank around 2 liters of water yesterday, and this morning the extra weight was gone. :) I suppose it's possible that the weight would have been gone today anyway, but it does seem awfully coincedental...

And as far as caffeine, I think it's actually a diuretic, meaning it will help flush excess water out of your system. But you have to drink water with it to avoid being dehydrated, etc etc. If I'm wrong and anybody knows the real answer, feel free to correct me because I'd be curious to know.

I try to limit my diet soda intake to one can per day at lunch.   I find that if I am drinking enough water, I don't really crave diet soda.   And if I am not drinking enough water and drink a diet soda, it doesn't really help my thirst.

I assume there are no real long lasting effects on weight vs drinking a diet soda a day. Perhaps a little water retention or something that goes away when you cut it out completely.

See my recent post in the foods forum about artificial sweeteners. Really they are worse for your body than sugar.

I guess you could say I am addicted to diet drinks, I drink about 4 or 5 20 ounce diet cokes a day. It may seem silly but it seems to keep me from eating. How do I get off of them? I get a headache if I dont have one. Is it mental? I dont know but I just dont think I can give up my diet coke.

Do you think that maybe that is why I have been on sort of a plateau?

I would not have thought so, since they have no calories. Maybe it is the sodium in them. Thanks for all your help.

I was pretty much the same way too originally. Just sub a bottle of water for a Diet Coke each day, then two, and so on. Eventually you'll get to the point where anything carbonated just feels unpleasant in your stomach. :\

I am sure that you do get headaches when you go without one. That's a caffeine addiction. Your best bet is some Tylenol, Advil, your headache drug of choice.
