"The Thanksgiving Ten" - losing those last annoying pounds challenge & support group

Quote  |  Reply
I have realized that as we get within about 10lbs of our goal weight, the challenges and struggles that we have to deal with are a bit different than for those earlier pounds.  I want this thread to serve as a sort of "kick in the pants" to get those last pounds off.  I also want this to serve as a "support group" where we can share struggles and successes or just to vent frustrations.  I chose Thanksgiving as the goal date because many people will be seeing their families and want to look their best!  I also think Thanksgiving in 8.5 weeks is a long enough time to get those last roughly 10lbs off.  Someone had mentioned having the goal be the Monday after Thanksgiving and everyone is free to chose their own goal date, but for me personally, I want to do it before the holiday.  We can then help each other develop strategies as to how to avoid the Thanksgiving overeating while still being able to enjoy our favorite seasonal foods and the decreased motivation to keep exercising and eating well between Thanksgiving and Christmas that seems to always happen.  We will also share tips and ideas about starting a maintenance plan and keeping those pounds off!

Please post your stats: age, sex, height, current weight and goal weight for Thanksgiving (November 22nd, 2007).

We will start on Monday October 1st.  Feel free to weigh in and post at any time.  I won't impose and official weigh in day, but I was thinking that Saturdays might work well as a motivation not to over do it during the weekend.  I will keep a running tally of where everyone is.

For weigh-ins, please send me a private message, I think it will be easier this way.  I will then update this post.  You can weigh in at any time, but I suggested Saturday as a good day.

I wanted to send each one of you that signed up before a note to your mailbox, but I have to do it one at a time and I just don't have time at the moment.

I'll go first:

Age: 25

Sex: F

Height: 5'3

Current weight: 128.5lbs

Goal weight: 118lbs

Lately I've been tempted by cravings and such thinking that I"m so close to my goal, one brownie or whatever won't hurt me.  Luckily I haven't given in to anything and I'm keeping up with all my workouts.  Since losing 30lbs, exercising is so much easier now!!  This week was a rough one at work - lots of meetings and other crap - I'm hoping for next week to be a bit "easier."  At least I wasn't sick like the week before :).

Hi, I'd like to get in on the fun!!

Age: 38

Sex: M

Height: 5'9.5"

Current Weight: 170 lbs.

Goal Weight: 160 lbs.

Actually, my goal weight when I joined CC was 165, but I'm setting my goals a little higher so that I have something to help maintain my motivation. It's too easy to think, "I'm down to my last 5 pounds, so I don't have to stay as focused as I have so far." But somehow, pushing the goal a little bit further from reach just gives the extra push I need. Oh yeah--that, and setting a goal for Thanksgiving gives me a reason not to let up on my progress now that it's starting to get cooler outside.

Thanks for doing this Kate!  I'm in total agreement that it's a different ballgame when you're getting close to goal.

Age: 49

Sex: F

Height: 5'7

Current weight: 143.2 lbs

Goal weight: 135 lbs

I'm small framed and the 135 lbs is at the high end of the range for me but I thought I could get away with fudging towards the top of the range since I'm as old as I am.  I'd really rather be a consistent size 6/8 instead of my current size 8/10 rather than focusing on how much I weigh.

My experience with this last little bit of weight is quite puzzling.  What I have been doing is definitely not working anymore.  I have a pretty high body fat percentage for my weight and it appears to have leveled off at about 26% even though I've lost pounds.  That tells me I'm losing muscle so I'm considering increasing my calories from 1200-1300 to 1500-1600 just in case I'm one of those people whose metabolism goes wacko.

I am also a runner/walker and log at least 5 miles 6 days a week.  I typically don't run more than 3 - 4 miles at a time and then walk the balance of my route to slow down and cool off.  I alternate running days with walking days to avoid injury.  I've read that too much aerobic activity will cannibalize muscle so this also concerns me.  I do a considerable amount of heavy lifting while working so I've not taken up any kind of formalized strength training routine. I am SO open to suggestions if anyone has any.

Sign me up!

I'm so excited! And I know my goal may seem a little low, but to put it in perspective I'm very small framed and about 2 years ago I weighed over 20 pounds less than I currently do (and I don't want to/need to go that low ever again).  I gained about 6 pounds over the summer thru binging and want to fix that!

Age: 17 (soon 18!!!)

Sex: F

Height: 5'4

Starting weight: 111.5

Goal weight: 103/104

This sounds awesome! 10 more lbs. by Thanksgiving? Perfect. Although I'll probably try for more, considering I'll likely gain some weight back on that day. Lol.

Age: 17

Sex: Female

Height: 5'6'' - ish.

Current Weight: 134 lbs.

Goal Weight: At least 124 lbs.

I might actually be looking at 120 lbs.. I don't know. Technically, I'm sure I am a "healthy" weight, but that pudge is being stubborn. I don't know what'll happen in 10 lbs., so we'll see.

After a bad weekend I really need to get myself in gear. I hope to lose 12lbs by Nov 30th, so 10lbs by the 22nd would be wonderful! Good thing we don't actually have thanksgiving over here because I'll probably use it as an excuse to eat.
Count me in!!

Age:  24

Sex: F

Height:  5'6"

Current weight: 140

Goal:  Was 135, but now I'm thinking 130

So I don't have exactly 10lbs to lose, but I have been stuck for a while and these last few sure have been frustrating!

Age: 24

Sex: F

Height: 5'3"

Current weight: 122

Goal weight: 115. For now anyway.

Ideally I'd like to get back to what I weighed a year ago (110), but I have since become a lot more active and put on some muscle.. at least I hope it's mostly muscle. ;)

I've been stuck at my current weight for 9 months now! I need someone to help hold me accountable...get on my ass about this ppl! LOL

Age: 27

Sex: F

Height: 5'3"

Current weight: 135

Goal weight: 125.

Maybe I'll see 120 someday too; but that's just a dream!

Sounds like fun...i actually have more then ten lbs to loose, but this is a good starting point...

Age: 23

Sex: F

Height: 5'6

Current Weight: 158lbs

Thanksgiving Goal: 145

Overall goal: 130- 135lbs (and we'll have to see from there ;)

This is a really great goal for me because that is around the time i will be visiting all of my family (on both sides) So it will be nice to have lost a good amount of weight by then! Yeah i'm excited!!
