54 Years Old, Needing to lose more then my age

Quote  |  Reply

Hi Folks,

I am looking for some of the post menopausal ladies that need to lose 60 pounds plus.  I am only 5 foot 2 and need to lose about 60 pounds.  I find I have no energy and my knees are starting to ache.  Add on that I can't sleep straight through the night and you wonder why I have waited (weighted??) so long.  I tried this in the summer and didn't stick with it so hope I can last this time.  Anyone that would like to be friends on this journey are gratefully welcome.  I won't promise to talk everyday, though I'll try but would like to touch base a few times a week to keep each other motivated and honest.Kiss

Bev

Cute name! I am in the middle of "mental"pause myself. Some sleepless nights, belly fat, sluggish. But you'd be surprised once you start moving and getting regular exercise how fast the weight will come off and how energetic you will feel. Do you exercise at all. I don't think you mentioned that.

Hi Beaverly,

I am 49 and am probably in the middle of menopause.  I had a hysterectomy a few years ago...but I do have some of the other signs...mostly the mental fog...I seem to be sleeping well though.  Thank the stars for that favor...there is nothing worse that not being able to sleep, in my opinion.

My weight is around the 220 mark and I am 5'7".  I could stand to lose probably 80 pounds...but I cannot even get my mind around that number right now.  I will work on the first twenty then see how things go after that.  I go to weight watchers meetings and it has been helping me to be motivated.  I am doing alright with WW.

With the painful knees I know exercising is difficult.  If you can stand it walking is a good one to start out with.  Of course if you are able to get to a pool that is the best knee saving exercise there is I think.  My knees are shot, I will have a replacement in a couple of weeks.  I walked 2 miles (slowly) this morning and it just about did me in.  My knee was hollering out in pain!!

Good luck and I will check in on you!

Hello, Happy New Year!

I just joined today and I'm real unsure about this forum, but I need some motivation and inspiration and maybe I'll find it here. I walked almost 5 miles yesterday, actually it was 9894 steps and I plan on walking to work tomorrow (only 2 miles to), after a hefty breakfast with my husband this morning... I am going to get ready and do some walking very soon. I guess since your new also, maybe this would be a good thing that we can get together on this site and keep each other motivated. Keep me posted

Shawna

Thanks everyone.  I definately need to up my exercise.  It is one of those Catch 22 things where I am over weight because I don't exercise and don't exercise because I am overweight.  My knees aren't shot but do sometimes give me twinges that I am sure are the precursor to big problems.  I did walk at a moderate pace for a half hour on the treadmill and then did another 20 minutes shovelling snow.

Shawna, do you use a pedometer to know how many steps you take.  I thought I might get one as a motivational tool.

I have added each of you as a friend.  Hope this is ok.

Hi There - I too am in the throws of menopause too - ugh. Its the lack of sleep that gets me. I too have 60 lbs to loose. my goal is for Sept this year as I do not want to be 50 and a fatty. I also have a pedometer and the goal for a great day is 10,000 steps. We joined the local rec centre that offers the pedometers and walking groups to help get me going. Time is also an issue. 3 teenagers at home but are now all old enough for me to put myself first sometimes. Good luck and I am here to help support!
Hi Bev---I, too am in the throes of the BIG M!  I have about 50 lbs to lose and right now could use an old fashioned kick in the pants to get going.  I occasionally have those sleep problems, too.  It is hard to stay motivated when you are so tired.  I also have 2 teenagers (started later in lifeLaughing) so some days frustration plays a part in diet sabotage as well (lol!)  Would like to be counted in as a friend if OK with you all!   Happy 2008!   Karen

Hello Bev,

I am 55 and need to loose over 60 lbs. . .I have been a member here since October 15, 2007. It is the best thing I have ever done for myself. It took a little while for me to get it right but once I did, it was easy.  One thing I have found to help jump start your healthy eating is to start with the healthy stuff you like. . .eat it in abundance, don't eat out, it really doesn't help. And last but not least, walk, walk, and walk some more. Good Luck!!!

Hi,

I just joined today I'm 39 and I had a hysterectomy three years ago. Ever since then I have gained ALOT of weight. I need to lose about 70 pounds and It's very hard when you have a husband, and two girls 12 & 9 that are all skinny. There very supportive but its still very hard for me. We stay very busy, basketball, gymnastics and sometimes I feel gross when I walk in to those places. Hopefully this sight will help, so Bev and everyone else thats reading this lets stick together because I need all the help and support I can get.

Thanks,

KEAINFLA

Welcome Keainfla,

I just added you to my friends list.  I am not sure what the easiest way is to keep in touch with a group of friends.  I wish they had the groups thing set up already.  I think it is easier to have a small group that you get to know to give a kick in the pants (or kick me!!) rather then get lost in the shuffle.  The big community is great for when you have questions though.

I will try to respond to everyone that posts journal entries that has me as a friend since that seems like the easiest way to keep track but I am still trying to figure this out.  If anyone has other suggestions let me know.

Bev

I'm in the same boat!  53 and need to lose 60 pounds.  Getting injured sparked 5 years of being a couch potato and another 5 trying to recover from that really packed on the pounds.  Funny how doctors never tell you that some medications have the side effect of weight gain!  I've got similar problem with sleeping and my knees so I can empathize with your struggle.  I just discovered this site so I'm still trying to learn the ins and outs but I would love to be able to talk with you.

Peace

I have had problems with the exercise Catch 22.  What helped me a lot was an arthritis exercise class.  They are low impact and it was alot of fun being the youngster of the group at 53!

Peace

I am a new member - 54 and want to lose about 60 lbs.  I play tennis (mostly doubles) and have sore knees too.  I lost 80 lbs back in '99 and have put back almost all of it - I am disgusted with myself.  Hope to find some motivation from all of you.

Welcome Floridachick and Dream Partner.  Sounds like there are lots of us who are 50 plus who want to lose 50 plus.  I tagged this page as well as added you as friends so that we can keep track of each other.  This site is so big, but I love it.  I just have to make sure that I don't spend all my time reading here instead of moving my big ass.

I have had a couple of good days eating wise and have gone on my treadmill each day.  I live in Ontario and right down it is bitterly cold, so I am glad that I have an indoor activity.

So what foods are people finding great nutrionally and tasty as well.  The one thing that I have tried is spagetti squash and loved it.  The taste of spagetti and the nutrition , calories and fibre of veggies.  Anyone else have a suggestion???

Hi Beaverley---It is freezing here in NE Ohio, too!  (I have added shoveling snow into my workout routine this week!)  Isn't spaghetti squash great?  I love it with salsa on top---yum!)  I know what you mean about not spending too much time here--I can get lost reading all these posts and before you know it, an hour has gone by and I probably should have been exercising my booty instead!   Keep warm!   Karen

Hi Bev  ~  I am so glad you started this ~ I joined today and already I think I found many twin sisters. I am 58 - need to lose 70+ pounds - although I have already lost 40 - but it is getting harder since I took a food vacation for the holidays.  I have decided I really hate hot flashes and only sleeping part of the night. Some nights my poor cat even leaves the bed - seems my night sweats drive her crazy.  I think I have been dieting since age 3 and I never seem to get it right. This time I am deciding it is a life style thing and there is no okay I lost the weight now play time. Like you I may not be here everyday - but I am going to try and check in as I need the support of others and want to give support to others.

Carol

Welcome Carol

Hope your first week here is going well.

Hello All,

I'm also 51 and going thru menopause.....Doctor told me to lose 65 lbs, maintain it for a year, then I can lose more. I've lost 32.5, half way there. But between the winter blues, menopausal blues, it's getting tough for me to stay focused.

So I need support and kick in the butt to stay on track! I will value any and all replies. Feel free to add me to your friend lists.

Marie

Hi,  I'm 52 not yet going through menopause, but I have a lot of weight to lose.  I'd like to get back to a size 10. Right now I am a size 24 so I have a way to go.  I have been watching my calories only to become more aware of when I eat and why.  I have noticed that I am not hungry when I reach for food so becoming more aware of reaching for food has given me reason to think about why I am eating; am I hungry, bored, or what. When I do eat I am trying to eat whole grains and more fruit and veggies. Counting calories is new to me.  I have always been an all or nothing dieter.  I did really well on the Atkins diet and the Cambridge diet.  I have trouble today with Atkins because I don't eat as much meat as I use to and I don't want all the hi fat foods, and the Cambridge diet is not available in the USA any longer.   I've never done well with weighting my foods or having to do a lot of preparation.  I have been dieting most of my adult life and this time has been the hardest for me to lose weight and maintain focus.   I started really gaining weight in my mid to late twenties.  When I look in the mirror I see a fat person but I don't see myself fat in my head.  That has been a battle for me.  Since my early life I have been a good weight, I'm not thinking fat until I see myself in pictures or in the mirror.  I would love to have someone to share my long journey with so I can be a motivator as well as be motivated.
