sorry what i meant is still below the burn meter ... my BMR is 1600

Well, for starters, starving one week and then eating more then normal the next is not healthy.  If you slowed down your metabolism enough while you didn't have time to eat, you may have gained some weight.  I doubt that whole 4 pounds are fat though.  You are probably bloated and retaining water from the odd eating pattern.  Also, if you ate anything salty, that's going to cause water retention as well.  Lastly, if you are about to get your period, many women also retain water during PMS and menstruation.

so one week's efforts are simply gone by one week's eating normally??....

If by "efforts" you mean one week of eating so irregularly that you are essentially starving yourself, then yes. You cannot achieve long-term weight loss that way.

It's possible you won't gain it all back, but you probably won't keep off the 5 lbs. because part of it was likely lost water weight and you also are messing with your metabolism such that even eating normally can cause you to put on weight.

BTW, if you look now as you do in your picture, I cannot fathom why you are attempting to lose weight, anyway. You're a lovely girl who should feel nothing but supreme confidence in her appearance.

Body weight fluctuates all the time. Factors that contribute to weight changes are water, food in the stomach, and waste.

Water can change your weight by as much as 10 lbs. The body can hold on to a lot of water at a time. Also, factor in the water that you drink. The food you eat weighs a lot - imagine putting all of the food you ate in a day, putting it in a plastic grocery bag, and weighing it on a scale. And finally, waste. As nasty as it is, your colon usually has waste either stored or developing in it. I have weighed myself, gone to the bathroom, and weighed myself again to be 2-3 lbs lighter.

They say the best time to weigh yourself is in the morning, after the bathroom and before breakfast. It still isn't perfectly accurate, though.

Body weight definitely does fluctuate a lot, but you still cannot maintain weight loss by employing unhealthy eating habits. You need to make the time to eat every day.

The thing to recognize that isn't clear in all these replies is that you didn't actually lose 5 lbs. of real weight in that first week - most likely, much of it was water weight and a simple lack of food in your system...so, eating normally again put some of the water weight back on, but if you really ate below what you burned, you didn't gain back any real weight, your body just readjusted and retained more water.  Keep up what you're doing (eating healthy below your burn rate) and you'll lose.

And know that the 5 lbs in the first week was not 5 lbs. of fat loss...

Rachel Bilson is a very attractive girl...(and i am only a little partial to her because she has the same first name as I do :p) she USED to be a girl of stick proportions. I think I'm about the same height as her and from old photographs she must have been lower then my personal lowest (80lbs).

More recently she has put on weight (past few years) and looks to be a more healthy weight. She has always been small but now she looks healthier. I wouldnt necessarily call her the latest hollywood bobble head since she seems to have gained rather then lost.

Of course I dont know her and dont know how she stays thin :) but its just interesting to note she used to be so much smaller then she is now.

and shes very pretty :) i am sure youll reach your goals yuyie and be even prettier :) but under eating for a week will just make you lose water weight fast. then the following week your body rehydrates.

to look at it from a different perspective, lets say you restricted to a reasonable level for your height and weight and maintained a healthy defecit for a week and saw a 2 lb weight loss. the following week, you eat more at maintenance. you should NOT see the 2 lbs come back (unless you eat very salty foods, then its water retention and will leave in a few days). its all about how you lose it.

its kind of funny-if you ate more then you did, the weight lost might have been fat, which you could maintain on your week of normal eating. but since it was water all your body needs is some fluids to rehydrate and gain it back. work with your body-it doesnt mean to sabotage your efforts, its just doing what it was created to do-keep you alive, healthy and hydrated. so work with it. teach it to let go of some of the fat stores because there is no chance for famine coming up. it doesnt need to store or be protective of fat stores.

good luck!!

Undecided I'm puzzled that you think she's gained weight throughout the years. http://theskinnywebsite.com/site/wp-content/u ploads/2008/02/rachelbilsonbikiniuhq99el3.jpg

i know i sound like a nutter :p but really she has! she used to be somewhere in the 70s (pounds) i believe. so this is an improvement and does look more healthy then before.

if i weighed what she currently does personally (i am recovering from an ED) i would still need to gain some weight. she does appear still too thin but compared to how she used to look its an improvement.

One thing to remember as well, the weight may be muscle.  Muscle weighs more than fat.  The weight you gained could be from so many different things, it is really hard to say.

I try to ignore my scale.  I use the body fat meter at my gym to see if I am losing fat and gaining muscle.  I also use a sewing measuring tape and measure to see if my measurements are going down.  Which is a sign, in some cases of gaining muscle and losing fat.

Unfortunately, it is really difficult to say why you gained the weight back.  I would guess it is from several of the reasons listed in the replies to this post.

Wait a day or so and see if it goes back down.

Above all else, don't get discouraged!  My weight fluctuates between 3 and 5 pounds just on a day to day basis, depending on my water intake and other things.  Scales don't take these things into account.

Rachel Bilson is really short too.

I was surfing on the internet when I read that! Rachel Bilson is barely 5'1 but she has never weighted less than 90 lbs!! Nicole Richie when she was a walking (well, running on the beach) skeleton was around 85 lbs!

Rachel Bilson is about 93/97 lbs, so her lowest weight was 92/93 lbs but not less.

So if she has the kind of body you want to have, you really, really don't have to starve yourself to reach 80/85 lbs, because she's never been that skinny. Her arms have always had some meat on them, she had always had pretty wide hips for a really thin girl and she has never been as skinny as Nicole Richie or MK Olsen! She's so much healthier than them!

Since when is it proper on this site to promote or defend anyone, star or otherwise, for looking emaciated?

Move on, please.

Ok! Why has this post become about Rachel Bilson? WHO CARES? Is she a CC member who needs support for weight loss...or an ED for that matter? Probably not. But yuyie IS a CC member in need of support, not diversion...

yuyie, I have this problem all the time. Losing 5 lbs and gaining it back and losing it again and gaining it back...and I eat around 1400 cals a day with about a 2000 - 2100 burn, average. I'm eating the right things, exercising daily, cardio and strength training. My muscle mass is gaining and my fat is burning. My clothes are beginning to give a little. Unfortunately, the scale is soooooooo daunting...I'm about to throw mine into Lake Michigan. I suggest you do the same (or choose an alternate large body of water wherever you live). And try to stay more consistent with your efforts. I'm sure you will see progress.
