First of all, please don't judge me...I know it's recommended not to drink when on any meds....but I've been on prozac for 3 weeks already and yesterday was he first time in 4 months that I finally went out!....considering that I'm a 19 year old college student thats too long!.....and I felt great being able to finally go out...and truly, I wanted to drink a bit....I hadn't done it in such a long time...and I just felt like a glass of wine...
But after the first glass I was already tipsy (I had eaten and everything..)...I know that prozac and alcohol add up and that's why this happens....but I kept drinking....probably 4-5 drinks in the night.......I know...too much!....I felt happy drunk tho...I was with excellent friends and never blacked-out or anything like that!...
I'm wondering....should I take my meds in the morning as I usually do or because of alcohol still in my system will it be better to wait?
take them as usual, the absolute worst case is that you feel a tad queezy but skipping it or waiting can actually make you feel sicker and it messes with your brain's chemical balance which will seriously affect your mood. Just take it with a glass of water and something good to eat
Thank you so much :)!!!
i'm on prozac and i still enjoy a glass of white wine or a beer now and then. taking prozac doesn't mean you can't drink at all...just really have to watch the amount. it'll make you super sleepy if you drink too much...
bytw...go ahead and take your regular dose. it's better to stay on schedule with your meds than miss. especially when you are in the first 30 days and your body is regulating itself.
...should you be out drinking at 19? Canadian? i didn't bother looking.
in any event, ease into it with one or two drinks - WINE is probably not the route to go to test out if you can handle it well....a very low alcohol beer would probably be the best route -- try something with lower alcohol content. i was on a SSRI for about 6 months -- and i drink. for the first time in my life, i experienced black out periods and "waking" up home. unsure where my car was or how i got home. not good at all. apparently i was never sloppy according to anyone, but its NOT okay to have periods of time where you are not in control of your mind. i cut back on the drinking when out with friends.
I have been on Prozac for about 12 years or so. I have never heard of anyone having psychotic episodes but I have heard of Prozac increasing thoughts of suicide in children and young adults. Alcohol is a depressant so it stands to reason that drinking can make the situation worse.
You probably shouldn't be drinking in the initial phase of taking this medication anyway. Not only do you need to allow your body to regulate the chemical substitution as Juliebean said but, your doctor may need to adjust the dosage up or down according to your own body chemistry. Using a depressant such as alcohol can interfere with this process.
That being said, I will have a few glasses of wine occasionally. As with everything else, it's all about moderation.
The experience I had when I was on Prozac, as well as other similar drugs, was just that I would get drunk a lot quicker and would have very bad hang overs. We're talking serious pain for 3 drinks over the course of an evening.
I would be very careful about over-doing it with alcohol if you are on medication for mental health issues. Especially be careful of spacing the drinks out over the course of the evening instead of gulping them down. Alternating alcoholic beverages and water is a good rule to stick with!
Always arrange for a ride home or take public transportation if possible. It's never a good idea to drink and drive, and it's even worse if you're that much more impaired because of your medication.
BE SAFE!
Since alcohol and Prozac act upon similar chemicals in the brain, the antidepressant may intensify the effects of alcohol, which is why some people will experience "blackouts" even though that was not something they had ever experienced before. Many healthcare providers say that, in general, it is okay to drink alcohol while on Prozac, as long as it's in moderation and only after you are aware of the effects that the medication may have on your body. I would say that 5 drinks in one sitting is not moderation--try limiting it to one or two drinks and you should be fine.
