Can I eat as many veggies as I want?

Quote  |  Reply

And still lose? I just stir fried (in 1/2 tsp EEVO) a small zucchini, a small yellow squash, bunch of portobello mushrooms, and a ton of tomatoes-it was alot! And I ate the whole thing. It was delicious too-used fresh ground lemon/pepper from Trader Joe's, so good!

I have been really leaning toward vegetarianism as of late, not on purpose, just craving organic  fruits and veggies way more than anything else. I practically live on the morningstar line, so yummy. I do eat fish occasionally which classifies me as a pescetarian, but I do not eat any other types of meat. As I get older I realize I NEVER liked red meat and am so turned off by pork and chicken. I think you really start to figure these things out as you get older.

Sorry for the rant, to get back to my question...will I still lose if I eat as many as I want?

Thanks!

You should pick up a copy of Eat To Live, or even read it for free on google books... basically the answer is yes, but you want to severely limit or cut out the faux meats totally.

Thanks! I will defintely check it out, I appreciate it!

Faux meats meaning fish? I may try that. I really only eat it once or twice a month now, going to see if I can cut it out even more. I understand it should probably be a gradual process and when I'm truly ready.

Thanks again!

Faux = fake... like the Morningstar stuff. :)

Oh that makes way more sense lol. Duh.

Thanks so much!

haha, yeah, fish is meat. :| faux meats are okay i think for when you're in a hurry but i hardly ever eat them; they're so processed and full of sodium and stuff.

You will only lose weight if you absorb fewer calories than you burn.  Even if the calories come from vegetables, they're still calories, and too many of them will make you gain just as much as too many calories from cheeseburgers.

Do you know how many veggies you would have to eat to equal an extra pound of weight gain? I feel gross even thinking about it!

seriously. yesterday i ate a WHOLE HEAD of cauliflower myself :) and it was only 144 calories. so basically you CAN eat as many veggies as you want because it's virtually impossible for you to go over by eating alot of veggies. chances are you will eat less because you'll be full from them.

I logged all the veggies and was shocked at how little it added up to, and how full I was. Wow, I'm impressed...making them again for dinner :)

Haven't had any processed food today, I noticed how high the sodium is on those veggie burgers-not good for weight loss.

I've only eaten fruits, nuts and veggies and a few soy crisps, think I am heading in the right direction

The magic of vegetables is your body can be fooled by quantity. If you're super hungry and are afraid of going over your calorie limit for the day, cook up a ton of vegetables! Fresh ones are the best, since frozen foods tend to be zapped out of their nutrients. Also, limit your sodium intake... I know, I know... salt makes veggies taste so much better, but maybe try something else like... adding garlic or vinegar and a tiny bit of oil?

I've been stir frying them in a 1 tsp of EVOO and I use fresh ground lemon pepper. I do not use any salt as much as I'd like to add a little. Its just not worth it.

I was so full last night by the amount of veggies I ate, I did not have any crazy binges; that made me quite happy :)

You can most def. eat AS MAN vegetables you can STUFF into your stomach!!! No Questions Asked! Just don't go over 1-2 TBS of olive oil a day because 1 tbs is 120 calories = but I see you use about a tsp which equates to roughly 40 calories which is not terrible! Plus, in order to absorb the nutrients & vitamins in vegetables you need to accompany them with some fat source and OLIVE OIL is def. a GREAT one!!! :)

You will most definitely continue to lose weight! Vegetables are an intricate part of a healthy, weight loss diet!!!

For the most part, vegetables are free - they are so low in calories that you can basically eat as many as you want.  Caveats:

Some select vegetables are surprisingly high in fat (avocados) and therefore high in calories.  It's healthy fat but still.

Many processed veggies, especially canned, are high in sodium.

Watch how you prepare your veggies.  Frying them, dipping them in sauce, or covering them in cheese, can add a lot of calories very fast.

For the most part, though, yes, veggies are free.  Eat lots of veggies and chances are, you'll fill yourself totally full before you overeat calorie-wise.

another reason veggies dont count(more or less) most veggies are FULL of fiber. the few calories they DO have come from carbs and almost always those carbs are fiber(not sugar). when push comes to shove, yes, fiber has calories. but your body doesnt absorb calories from fiber.

now i read this a long time ago and my memory is shot so if im wrong, anyone, please dont make me feel like an idiot, as people on this forum like to do. haha im just repeating back what i remember! but do tell if im wrong, id love to know!

"Fresh ones are the best, since frozen foods tend to be zapped out of their nutrients. "

I dont think this is true, nutitionists say frozen foods actually retain their nutritional value better than fresh vegetables.
Yeah, frozen vegetables are comparable in nutrients to fresh. How you cook them is more important. Boiling the crap out of them and then draining off the water isn't good, but steaming them or nuking them is better. Or eating them raw, of course. Some veggies might give you digestive issues if you eat them raw, but most are OK.

As for calories, well, let's face it: I know I didn't get fat eating too many carrots.
