I lost weight while on antidepressants a few years back. Maybe I was too depressed to eat (which would be out of character for me!)  so in theory it shouldn't be a problem. Loss of appetite is a side effect for some antidepressants.

I don't want to discourage you from dieting, but if you are already under pressure, do you need the extra stress that dieting may cause?

Whatever you do, don't stop taking the medication without talking to your doctor first.

S.

I'm sorry I don't know, but I wish you all the best lady!

I'm on Lexapro and I am having a hard time losing weight. I am 31   5'4" 184

I eat the calories I am supposed to and bike 10 to 14 miles a day. I have only lost 1 lb in 2 weeks.

I called my Dr and he said I will just have to try harder since he can't change my meds b/c of my allergy to xanax.

based on your e-mail, you are off to a better start than I. Keep up the good work.

I'm currently on 75 mg of Effexor and 25 mg of Seroquel to help me sleep at night. The Effexor says a side effect is weight loss, while the Seroquel warns of weight gain being a side effect... So I'm kind of stuck in the middle.

The first time I was on anti-depressants in high school (this is my second time on them), I didn't notice much weight change because I was doing PT on a regular basis and still doing sports... Now that I am starting to get on a regular workout schedule again, I am starting to lose a little weight.

I have heard of people gaining and losing weight, just like with the depo shot... It may have something to do with your family history/genetics as well.

Good luck to you! :)

Many years ago I was on several different anti-depressants, at different times. Prozac, Paxil, Effexor, and Celexa... all by themselves during different periods. I lost weight on all of them, especially the Prozac. But I'm not sure if that was due to the meds or what I was going through at the time.

Wellbutrin, also known as Zyban helps treat depression, helps you stop smoking, and is used for weight loss. I am currently on it for depression and weight loss and I have lost 5.5 pounds in a little over 5 weeks.  I am also seeing a nutritionist once a month to monitor my intake to see what is slowing my metabolism. I started on a very limited carb plan (20g per day) in April and this month we added a few foods in, then next month we'll see how I did and add more things if it's going well

I also take welbutrin /klopan and elvill as well as zoloft

so things seem to be against me

i worked out hard today to the shred dvd

i am going to try and do it everyday

lets hope i can lose some weight

my age is 47 next month

i am 5'7

wight is now 136

i eat 1500 calories a day

so lets hope i can do this

good luck and best wishes to you all

I'm currently taking a variety of antidepressant and antianxiety meds. I have lost 30 pounds on them and did not have a hard time doing it. The only way you would gain weight is that your appetite would increase causing you to eat more. They don't affect how you hold on to your weight. 3500 calories still equals a pound. Good luck!

I've been on Effexor (75mg) for the last one and a half years.  I have lost 42 pounds in the last year by watching what I eat and exercising 3 times a week.

When I initially went on the drug I gained about 10 or 12 pounds.

I was taking Lamotrigine (also called Lamictal) for bipolar disorder for a long time and I gained weight due to the effect of never really caring too much about any one thing. Because of that, I could never get focused on eating healthy or losing weight. Although, it was easier to get myself to work out...

I can't speak for all medications, but my doctor put me on zoloft a few years back.  She said that many people taking it do see some weight gain but she said that was because it can increase your appetite.  It doesn't actually cause some magical weight gain all on its own.  She said to just watch what I eat and count my calories and I should be fine.

The end result: I only gained a couple of pounds but that's because it gave me an absolutely horrendous appetite.  After a couple of months, my body got used to it and my appetite kind of returned to normal.  I hear when you increase the dosage, the same thing happens....so give your body a couple of months to get used to the new dosage, and in the mean time, just watch how much you are eating.

Good luck!!

One thing to remember is that just because a drug has weight gain listed as a potential side effect that does not mean that you will gain weight while taking it.  Most anti-depressants that "cause" weight gain do so by increasing appetite.  So like the other posters, I think if you continue to watch your cals, you should be fine.  I know that some people have gained on Elavil (amitryptaline), but I lost weight on it.  It depends on how the medication and your body interact.

I'm sure you know that at your current stats, you have a healthy BMI of 21.3.  Are you sure that you need to lose more weight?  It seems like where you are now would be just right.  Not having the additional strain on your body and mind that might come from focusing on weight loss would probably make things easier right now.  I hope you are feeling better very soon.

I am on citalopram 30mg daily and I have lost weight on it. I looked up a journal about losing weight on my medication and it said that citalopram can alter your fat metabolism. I think it's just that bit harder than normal!

thank you all for your kind replys

good luck to you alll

I was on paxil from age 16 to 28.  It made me gain a ton of weight.  I quit Paxil last year and since then I've lost 35 pounds without even trying.  I was definitely eating a lot more on the paxil and I had a hard time trying to lose weight.  Also, I think I just stopped caring about the weight I'd put on.  Antidepressants suck the life out of you.  I'm sure I needed to be on them for awhile, but 12 years was way too long.

Please stop taking antidepressants!!! My sister just got off Zoloft she was going through an awful depression and it made her depression worse!! She was sinking deeper and deeper into a severe depression until she went to a doctor yesterday that looks in your eyes and can tell whats wrong with you he told her stuff that no one could have known without knowing her.  Her problem you ask?? Her pitutary gland had bottomed out she had very very low seratonin left that's why it was because of the ZOLOFT!! He put her on some herbs and she is feeling much better now.  Exercise is a natural way to build up your serotonin level!! Please stop taking antidepressants they only make the depression worse!!

Iridology is the medicine this doctor practices.  Look it up on internet.  Please don't take antidepressants!! I wouldn't want anyone going through what my sister just went through!!

Advising someone to stop their antidepressants is very unwise. Some people have to switch to find the right one that works for them. I myself have found antidepressants to be very helpful, and suddenly stopping taking them can lead to all sorts of horrible side effects. I'm not quite sure what your explanation is: "Her pitutary gland had bottomed out she had very very low seratonin left that's why it was because of the ZOLOFT!!" Most modern day antidepressants work by increasing the levels of serotonin in the brain so it is unlikely that antidepressants gave her very low levels.

Well my sister isn't taking the zoloft and she feels better now.

Iridology is - to be kind - nonsense of the worst kind. It's medical quackery and BS on the highest order, on par with homeopathy and naturopathy.

Do not under any circumstances ever take medical advice from irresponsible quacks who advice you to cut out prescription medication - people have died from that before.
