BACKGROUND INFO
Age: 18
Gender: Male
CW: 180
Height: 5"8'

In the summer of 2007 (June-August) I started my weight loss journey.  I started out at 220 pounds in June and made it to 190ish by the end of August.  I stopped exercising at the end of August but continued to keep a small calorie deficit.  By January I weighed 185 pounds and I started exercising again.  At the beginning of March I was down to 180.

I've been plateuing since March (2 1/2 months or so), even though I have been exercising and keeping a calorie deficit.  I couldn't figure out why I wasn't losing.  Yesterday, I thought "Well maybe I'm not eatting enough?  Or maybe I'm eatting too much?"  So I decided to wear my Polar F11 Heart Rate Monitor for 24 hours and see how many calories I burn.

RESULTS
In the end, my HRM said I burned about 1875 calories.  This was somewhat surpiring to me, because according to this site, 2300 calories is my maintaince.  I've checked this with other sites and the Harris Benedict equation and they all say about 2300.

My net calories (eatten calories minus exercise calories) have been about 1700-1800 calories a day to create a 500-600 deficit, or so I thought.

If I go with the information my HRM gave me, I only had a deficit of 75-175, which is not much.  So I think this is why I haven't been losing any weight lately.

Is my HRM right?  Should I go by that to calculate my deficit?

HRM are not meant to be worn 24 hours...that is an inaccurate number.

eta...theres already half a dozen threads on this subject....

I have an F11 too and love it. That being said, it is not intended to be worn all day to determine your daily burn. It's only meant to give you your burn during exercise when your heart rate is elevated. To get a true daily burn, you can either get your BMR tested by a doctor or nutrionist or get a Body Bug (which is very expensive).

Oh okay.  I didn't know that.  Thank you both for the information.

also tfin, your stats sound totally healthy.  are you sure you need to lose weight?  i don't know how much muscle you have; but if you're reasonably muscular, you might be at a perfect maintenace weight.
