it depends. If I'm going out I always try to find what I'm eating first as to avoid big holy cow that really had that many calories moment.  I typically count afterwards at home because I basically know what everything has.

While im eating it. lol is that an option?

I make assumptions of what the calories are.

i count afterwards. i don't plan my meals, i eat whatever i feel like at the time. then again, i'm not dieting so i don't have to worry about meeting a certain goal.

before 85% of the time.

I know what's in my fridge and what I'm in the mood for, so I pre-log the night before or early in the a.m.  Then, adjust food log accordingly.  I then look at the analyser and sometimes chg things to add more fiber, or protein.  Also l log the things I eat everyday for healthy balance, glass of milk, an orange for vit. c, etc.

some of both...i usually do up until dinner while im at work in the early early morning...

Then do dinner after Ive weighed everything....dinner always varies, we never really know what we're having....I have started leaning towards logging dinner first when we know what we're having, then weighing my food to match my log....rather than the other way around (that way I dont "accidentally" go over)

If I'm eating junk I usually never count... If I'm eating healthy I'll keep a mental tally as I'm eating. Or if I'm committed to logging, I log in the calories afterwards, preferably just once every evening.

Mostly before so I can figure out how much leeway I have during the day.  I have been known to change my mind about what I want during the day and sometime I'll change a recipe while cooking dinner.

I always plan out my food for the next day the night before. Have been for about one and a half years now. Works for me, especially if there is a celebration or event and I need to eat less during the day

Ususally before

I like to plan what I eat while at work, so later on I know how many calories I have left for dinner and desert or whatever :]

i basically know how many calories are in everything i eat, so i just eat that without going over my limit.

if i'm eating something new, which is rare, i count first.

Depends on what part of the day it is... I almost always eat the same exact things before 2pm every day so I know how much it all is roughly. I start counting things before I eat them at about 3pm when there is more variety and I'm nearing my quota for the day.

I count before and write them all down..that way I know exactly what I can and cannot eat.  It's worked well for me.

I count before, if I'm in control of the meal. If I'm eating something prepared by someone else I tally it in my head as I eat it. I've gotten pretty good at sizing up portions of lots of different foods that I eat regularly (though I'm no good at calorie bomb desserts and fried foods).

Then I sheepishly write it down on a card in my wallet when no one is looking.

Before.

man, i've been wanting to get this issue off my chest for a while:  i can't eat unless i'm eating while on this website logging in my food.  then i read other people's forums about how much they ate so i can feel justified.  an absolute terrible habit.

The entire day before.

If I'm eating something that's not usually part of my diet, I'll log it before so I can figure out how much I should eat.  If it's a regular food for me, I'll log it while I'm eating or after I'm done.

I like to do it before. Now i can pretty much do it as I eat, makes it easier to resist that extra piece of steak.

After, sometimes as much as a couple days after. However, I kind of know how many calories most things have in them, so it's more of a mental tally.
