Help! BMI must be off

Quote  |  Reply

I'm new here and a bit frustrated. Could anyone please help?

My weight is 300lbs

I am 5'6

I am lightly active

Large Frame

The BMI calculator has given me 2850 calories per day.

I am already calorie counting and take in 1,900 per day, and not hungry.

Any advice please!

Thank you. :)

The 2850 is a maintenance figure. If you eat less than that, you will lose weight. I would listen to your body and 1,900 should be fine -- although it's a little on the low side as your calorie deficit is more than 500 per day.

Thank you :)

I think you may be confusing BMI with BMR.

BMI is an index which tells you if you are in a 'healthy' weight categary and this chart is WAY off so dont go by that alone.  It only takes into consideration a very tiny element of the whole picture.  Even my doctors don't go by that ever.

BMR is the # that tells you how many calories you should eat or burn in a day.

The larger you are, the more energy it takes just to keep your body running... but the bigger a deficit you can afford to run. At 300 pounds, you should be quite safe keeping the full thousand calorie deficit in place each day and eating 1800 calories. That should be enough to have you feeling comfortably full, non-deprived, and still losing weight steadily.

BMR isn't provided on this site - it is the calories you burn in a coma.

The numbers provided on this site are how much you burn given your level of activity (you could call it your AMR - Activity Metabolic Rate, as opposed to Basal Metabolic Rate), and your calorie target (how much you should eat), which ranges from between 500 to 1000 less than your AMR.

But BMR isn't on this site. There are plenty of sites that provide this number, if you are interested.  www.phord.com/cc is a good calculator (created by cc member phord)
