How many times do you step on the scale to get your weight?

Quote  |  Reply
For almost a year Ive been driving to a clinic to weigh in because of my size and this weekend just bought my first scale for use at home.  Am hoping this isnt like when I got cable and found it hard to stay away!

While doing the clinic, since it was only once a week weigh in I would weigh twice and if they were close go with the first but if they were a bit off, weigh a third time and use the two closest to each other.

Do you just step on to weigh once or how many times?  I feel if its off it will balance out week to week but do like to get the closest to accurate number.

I've just started weighing in but since I'm a bit concerned about false readings I've been been weighing twice and a third time if they are more than a pound different. (example: this morning my first reading was 227 second was 229, third was 229 so 229 it is).

For the week I only record once a week but I think I will record on Wed and monitor on Sun. I'm going to try not to be a compulsive weigher. Smile

My scale tends to give me different readings most of the time! Sometimes by just a .1 of a pound, other times by a whole pound. So some mornings I'll just get on once if I like the first number... other times I'll get on 2 or 3 times and see what numbers are the same. And then my boyfriend's scale always says I'm 2 or 3 pounds less than mine does! They're both digital, different kinds though go figure. I DO weigh every day, but I keep a log and take a weekly average so the little highs and lows every day don't freak me out.

I think it depends on the scale.  I have two at home, and the digital one is the correct one and the analog one is always five pounds off.  The digital one, however, like to stick to whatever weight it read previously (for instead, one weighed myself one morning before a shower then the next morning after I got dressed and it didn't change...and my boots weigh 5lbs!).  To make sure it reads correctly, I make it weigh something else before weighing myself.

Whenever curious, I weigh myself on the analog one and it tells me something completely different each time.

Once you've got the message through to yourself "the less I ate yesterday and the more I exercised yesterday really does = the less I weigh today" you should revert to once per week first thing in the morning with an empty bladder naked standing on the same bit of floor stepping on the scale once only

Smile

I don't think any scale is gonna be 100 percent accurate especially an analog scale. Also it's not good to weigh your self too often, (1) you'll just discourage or disappointed if you don't see the results that you're looking for, (2) your body might be loosing body fat and at the same time gaining muscle depending on what kind of workouts you're doing. Therefore you may not see it on the scale but you actually are doing good. Me personally I weigh myself every two or three weeks.

I get on it at least 3 times. The readings are usually slightly different each time, so I average it out.

Once you start working out and building muscle, you can't really rely on the scale to tell you if you've lost weight....muscle weighs more than fat, and so you might have trimmed up and lost inches, but you may weigh the same or even more! This might cause you to freak out....don't let it!

The best thing is to kick the scale all around the floor until you find the one spot that consistently shows the lowest weight. My husband and I all but have a chalk outline around that one glorious spot.

Sadly this is the sort of thing we do to amuse ourselves

 Gravity?  Tetonic plates?  Weak foundation?

i weigh myself once, and write it down. i might maybe weigh twice if the number is way lower than i thought it was gonna be, b/c my eyes just can't believe it.

I weigh myself just once a week generally.  I am in a habit of standing on the scale twice, but since I have this new digital scale, it is very consistent, I stand on it even 3 times, and it always gives the same measure (to 0.1 of a kg), so will probably just stand on it once and believe it! lol

I also take my measurements once a month (chest, waist and hips), to see if there is a difference there too.

I have digital scales and weigh myself once first thing in the morning and record it. I sometimes step on the scales a time or two throughout the day just to see whats going on.

I personally would not recommend weighing only once a week, because (for example) if you ate high sodium the previous day, the weight you see may be a result of water retention and not your true weight.  By weighing yourself daily, as long as it doesn't become an obsessive habit, you can spot trends, like how your weight is affected by TTOM, high sodium, etc.

I'm like mortalmonkey where as I weigh myself 5 times rapid fire once a day after going to the bathroom. I weigh myself naked, and take the average of the five numbers and record that. My scale only weighs ever .2 of a pound as opposed to .1lb, so this way I avoid getting a 220.6, when I'm really something like 220.5. For me, I weigh daily because I like to keep track of trends, but I only compare every Monday against the one previous. In my journal I keep track of the weight I get on Monday's. =) I might switch the day to Tuesdays, because I always seem to weigh the least on Tuesdays, lol.

spirochet:  that was so funny!

On my daughter digital scale, if I weight just seconds after first weighting I get a completely different, higher reading.  But if I wait 1/2 hr or so, it will be the same.

It's like her scale needs to 'rest' between reading to give the same results.

I want a new scale, but waiting to make it a reward present when I get weight down a few more pounds.  How I'm going to select it will be to line all the scales on the floor, stand on each one and buy the lowest weighing one!!!

If my weight is down I find I weigh a lot, as I'm so excited to see that number.  But when weight is up, I don't weigh as often.

I weigh myself all the time everyday. I'm obsessed :)

Actually I don't take it seriously and Saturday is my weigh in day. I note this down as my real weight and also take some measurements (waist mainly).

We have a digital scale and as its so conveniently in the bathroom I am always checking my weight. Before eating, after eating, fully clothed, not so much clothing, before and after clearing my system (ahem!) :D

Its amazing how the weight fluctuates through the day. I see it as a sort of experiment. I don't take it seriously.

I've also found that the digital scale needs to "rest" before a 2nd reading and sometimes it can be different. Actually its okay after someone else weighs themselves.

Good to see I'm not alone with my scale obsession!

Digital scale here too.

I actually have a little statue that use, if I suspect that my scale is being wonky. By wonky I mean that it tends to repeat the last reading if the weight is close to the same, so small losses can get missed. But my 3-lb statue is perfect - pick it up, change the reading, put it down, change it back, and it's more "honest" now. Or maybe it is intimidated, afraid that I will throw the statue at its glass face and that is why it drops that pound for me. :)

FWIW, historically I logged my weight as "whatever the lowest number I could coax out of the scale that day". It was good for morale. Now that my loss is much slower, I just go with morning weight to be more consistent.

my scales are pretty good digital ones - worth the investment. i usually do twice just in case it didn't set to zero properly at first.

I only record my weight once a week but do sneak a peek most days!

Best thing is to weigh yourself at the same time on the same day each week with the same scales placed on the same place on the floor - I find first thing in the morning before eating and after a trip to the loo is best.

Also, for best results use a hard surfaced level floor - not carpet.

But measuring my waist, hips, bust, upper thigh and upper arm is far more encouraging for me because i do some weight training. Hey we all want to fit into smaller clothes so what we weigh doesn't matter it's our size!!

I have digital scales and usually weigh myself twice 1st thing in the morning... Just to make sure the reading is the same... my scales are pretty accurate until my 2yr old gets a hold of them and moves them around then i get dodgy readings... so twice for me just to make sure !! Laughing

I step on once and step off then look at the scale to make sure it's at 0 (I use a dial scale and I have to adjust it from time to time), then I step on and get my weight. So, technically twice, but really just once.
