Recently moved to Dubai, and as its a muslim country products containing pork are seperated into a different section of the supermarket and have warning stickers 'pork product'. i was shocked to see poptarts in the piggy section, isnt that rather yucky, i used to like them as an occassional treat but now ill never eat them again.

why do pop tarts contain pork?!?! that's revolting!! :o

According to the Kellogg's website the ingredients of strawberry poptarts listed as follows

Wheat Flour, Glucose Syrup, Dextrose, Sugar, Vegetable Oil, Strawberry (7%), Invert Sugar Syrup, Wheat Starch, Apple, Salt, Colour (Beetroot Red, Annatto, Paprika Extract), Raising Agent (Sodium Hydrogen Carbonate, Diphosphates, Calcium Phosphate), Citric Acid, Maltodextrin, Modified Starch, Carrot Juice, Tricalcium Phosphate, Acidity Regulator (Sodium Citrate), Beef Gelatin, Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum), Emulsifier (Soy Lecithin).

The only animal product seems to be 'beef gelatin'..... which makes them unsuitable for vegetarians but I wouldn't have thought unsuitable for muslims.
are they in the pig section, or the non-halal section. Being non-halal doesn't necessarily mean the product contains pork. Even a permissable meat, killed the wrong way is non-halal.

It could also just be a pragmatic marketing decision, maybe only westerners eat pop tarts anyway so it is easier to put all the western products together.
Well here http://www.kelloggs.ca/cgi-bin/klog-canada/pr oduct.pl?product=489&company=2 and here http://www.kelloggs.ca/cgi-bin/klog-canada/pr oduct.pl?product=484&company=2, and just about for every variety it's listed as "gelatin"... so if it's not specified, it's most likely pork...
they are definately in the pork section, they have a big red warning sticker on them just in case. At first i thought the shop may have it wrong but a few different supermarkets label them.

That is so gross! I'm glad we don't have poptarts here or I would have eaten them I'm sure =S

I found this information on another website and here is the information provided by an employee of Consumer Affairs Department at Kellogg:

Thank you for contacting Kellogg Company about the gelatin we add to some of our products. We are happy to provide you with this information.

Gelatin is used to help the texture of the product and is derived from either beef or pork. Kellogg's® Frosted Mini-Wheats® and Kellogg's® Rice Krispies Treats® cereals contain type B gelatin, which is derived from beef. Whenever marshmallow ingredients are present in a Kellogg's® cereal brand, the marshmallow contains type A gelatin, which is derived from pork. Kellogg's® Krave™ Snack Bars also contain type A gelatin derived from pork sources.

Type B gelatin is derived from beef sources and is found in the frosting of all varieties of Kellogg's® Frosted Pop-Tarts®, Kellogg's® Frosted Pop-Tarts® Snak-Stix™, all varieties of Kellogg's® Pop-Tarts® Pastry Swirls, and Kellogg's® Nutri-Grain® Minis with Yogurt Icing. Plain (unfrosted) Kellogg's® Pop-Tarts® do not contain gelatin. None of the equipment that comes in contact with the gelatin in Kellogg's® Frosted Pop-Tarts® is used in the production of the other pastries.

Kellogg's® Rice Krispies Treats® Squares contain type A gelatin in the marshmallow, which is derived from pork sources.

The pregelatinized wheat starch contained in some of our toaster pastries is derived from wheat and does not contain any gelatin. Vegetable shortening only is used to produce plain or frosted Kellogg's® Pop-Tarts®. No animal shortening is used.

We appreciate your patronage of our products and hope that this provides you with the information you need to make food choices appropriate for your family.

Sincerely,

Ana Lara Consumer Affairs Department

I just get tired of seeing posts where it is REVOLTING to eat meat.  I understand it is a personal choice for people to eat what they do.  Be it vegan, vegitarian, meat, junk food (aka overprocessed crap by the clean-eating crew).

After all, it is nature.  check your teeth.  there is a reason humans have canines.  If you choose not to use them, that's fine.  I just don't appreciate hearing how revolting it is.

If you're tired of posts by people who don't eat meat then WHY ARE YOU IN THE VEGETARIAN FORUM?

Wow, I feel the love and harmony of your lifestyle.  So accepting of individuals rights.  Perhaps I was here researching it for myself, and you have made me so welcome.

zhowe, you came into this forum making sarcastic remarks and expect to be accepted?

my comment is just that it doesn't have to be revolting.  some people eat vegitarian for health reason.  they may even like meat, but choose not to eat it for health reasons.

And other forums don't throw people out just for not agreeing with them.  the weight loss forum has yet to tell someone to get out because they think eating more calories will actually help with a weightloss plateau.

I don't actually eat much meat, mainly for calorie reasons, so i read vegitarian forums to get ideas of healthy low cal meals.  but i don't find meat revolting.  I don't avoid something because the last ingrediant on the list is gelatin, which contains as the last ingrediant in it's list a meat byproduct.

If you don't want to eat meat, don't eat it.  but you don't have the right to condemn others for eating, just like i don't condemn people for not eating it.

"vegetables for breakfast ew ew ew ew" not something i've ever said.

Oh, and i don't really need your acceptance.  But I won't be told where i can and cannot post.

Wow that is absolutely disgusting. I'm a vegetarian and I don't eat poptarts because I don't really like to eat junk food but WOW that is nasty.

Poptarts contain gelatin.. which comes from animals.  Plenty of things contain gelatin.  I don't see how this is 'gross'.  If you're vegetarian (I am not but I used to be) then you should know that gelatin comes from animals and should avoid it if that's what you are trying to do.  If not then, well, you've probably been eating it all this time anyways...

Ok some vegetarians may not have thought there would be gelatin in poptarts, now they know and are staying away from it. People need to stop b*tching. Zhowe, you came on here and said "He, imagine that. next people would eat Bacon. Or Sausage. or HAM!" What kind of reaction did you expect? A lot of us are vegan/vegetarian for the animals and there is no reason for you to say crap like that. We are not knocking you for eating dead animals we are knocking you for your little remark. This is a vegetarian forum and you knew you were going to start something with that. Whatever.

chelseagirl, you totally brought me back...I used to live in a muslim country too, and we had a Pork Store too....I don't remember any pop tarts in there, just the usual assortment of bacon and ham and baby back baby back baby back ribs. YUM. And yes that was yellin ;) now go ahead and kick me out of the veggie section I was just reminiscing :)
