Hey guys, I figured this forum would be the most likely for others to be able to respond, although maybe it would be more appropriate in the Foods forum, or Recipes or something. Sorry. ;)
Anyway, I'm really interested in the Hungry-Girl Cookbook, but I'd also like to see it -- physically pick it up, flip through it, make sure I love it, etc -- before buying it, so I don't want to just order it. I've been to Borders and Barnse and Noble, now, and I can't seem to find it. So, my question is for those of you who have found it in stores: where did you find it? I'm standing there, staring at huuuuge bookcases in the "Cookbook" section, but then there are like twenty different sub-sections. And alphabetical by author? Or type? Or what? I've tried everything I could think of in both stores, but no luck.
So, where do you find your copy? Thanks!!
I bought mine at Target, but my local grocery store also sells it.
Really.. hmm, maybe I'll check out Target... Was it just sort of laying around obviously, there, or what?
I was just at Barnes and Noble on Friday and it was there. It was right in the New Releases section.
i bought it from my local bookstore as well but I read on some online reviews after I bought it that it isn't worth the money b/c most of their recipes that are in the book are on hungry girls website..which is true.
I just made the onion rings... Maybe I did something wrong, but the Fiber One cereal for traditional breadding was pretty horrible.
Oh, I guess the "New Releases" section makes sense. Those are usually displays up on tables in the front and stuff, right? I guess I could have asked, but I don't like asking for help when I don't know the exact name, and I would have felt really dumb saying "so, I'm looking for a book... Hungry-girl... Cookbook..." and having the worker look at me like I'm a crazy diet-obsessed weirdo. ;)
Thanks for the suggestions, guys!
I found mine at barnes and noble, but I have seen it at target. I love mine. Good luck!!!!!
I find their recipes to be bad...
and i agree with you yoonheedme, i made the chicken parm (used the fiber one) and it was so nasty. It tasted like sweet sandpaper on chicken. I also dont like their blueberry (protein) pancakes.
Has anyone enjoyed their recipes? Not like, well, its okay for replacement food, but actually enjoyed food.
I held off on buying the book because I knew it would be the recipes on their site. I love, love, love the site, but I don't follow the recipes exactly. Its probably because I've developed my own approach to cooking; but I'll take one or two recipes (from anywhere, not just HG) and tweak them to my own tastes. Don't like carrots in my lasagna, so I leave 'em out. I can't find or don't like a lot of stuff, so I just make it the best I can and adjust my nutritional info.
HG is amazing for the news they provide and their swaps. I never thought about seriously re-creating all my favorite bad for you things. I guess I just told myself some things could never be lower calorie. I agree that Fiber one is not the best breading because of its sweetness, so I use regular corn flakes. Sure I sacrifice the fiber, but I pick it up somewhere else.
I think the point of HG is that eating can and should still be fun, and that we, as health conscious consumers, should feel empowered and educated about our options and the choices we make.
-Couldn't find the book at my local bookstore either, so I ordered it online.
-Not ALL the recipes are posted on the website, one of the daily e-mails I got from the site said that half the recipes in the book are brand new (i.e.- NOT on the website) However, pictures are posted for all the recipes (kinda strange).
-Recipes I've tried that are not just tolerable, but actually yummy: Eggs Bene-chick, Starbucks Breakfast Wrap Swap, Red Velvet Cupcakes, Hail Trail Mix
-I like her stuff because it is "real world I worked all day and seriously don't feel like cooking" recipes, it can save you from drive-through on the way home!
Yeah, I figured that most are online, which is partly why I wanted to actually see the book. On the other hand, I like just flipping through cookbooks looking for something good, rather than searching for something online. Anyway, thanks for the input everyone! I'll keep looking :)
And i'm with stacypenguinsfan: I, too, do lots of tweaking. I don't even remember if I've actually ever made any of the H-G foods... but I sure do get loads of ideas, etc!! :) Love it!
In all fairness, I have to say that the desserts are FANTASTIC! I haven't tried any of her cupcake/muffin recipes (I have a feeling they won't turn out too tasty) but her simple crepes and shortcakes are yummy. Pretty simple to make, too.
Though you really don't need to buy the cookbook for those :) It's pretty much a bunch of low-calorie things put together in pretty ways. Like a dessert shell with low-calorie ice cream with strawberries, low-calorie pudding and fat-free Reddi-Whip. Easy breezy!
I love the lord of the onion rings. I am not always a fan of breading with fiber one but these were great. The chicken parm I agree was pretty nasty my poor husband will eat anything and that was one he just couldn't swallow. I also love the big fat greek pita (yum). If anyone has kids out there mine loved the fiber-ific fried chicken strips.
I also like this book for the dining out survival tips and ideas.
Did you find your book yet?
I ordered this book the other day off line. I can't wait for it to get here, I am kinda picky though so I am a little nervous. But I have been trying a lot of new things lately, so its worth a try right? The worst thing that can happen is I make something I hate and feed it to the dog. ![]()
I ordered mine online and got it about a week ago. It is my 10 pound weight loss reward, so I should be able to open it by next weigh in (Tuesday). I have been a fan of their emails and recipes for a month now.
I disagree with some of the other posters about the Fiber One breading. I made chicken nuggets by breading them with Fiber one. I thought it was really crispy and yummy. I added some garlic powder. I thought it may have been a little bland tasting but I really liked it and fond it easy to swallow. I guess it all goes up to personal taste right!
I would also like to point out that the book isn't only recepies. It has lots of other tips. Again I guess it goes to personal choice. I hate trying to make a recepie with my lap top balancing on my counter. I would rather have a book that I can cook from, that is okay if I spill some milk or dribble some egg white on it.
I have the cookbook as well and I have to agree with kjmadill.. I've made the Fiber-One onion rings, chicken tenders and chicken parm. The onion rings were awesome!
Tonight I'm doing a Appetizers for dinner: Fiber One: onion rings, mozz. sticks and chicken fingers with low-fat chesse quesdillas!
My husband is very very picky and he loved the Fiber One onion rings.. the chicken parm was just so so.
If I am interested in a cookbook I see if it is at my local library.
I've been on the fence about buying it - on the one hand I really like HG recipes (the muffins turn out great) even ones with Fiber One (works better as part of a pie crust), but on the other I know that most recipes I come across in a book you can find in one form or another on the internet for free. It's very rare that I actually buy a cookbook - most of the time internet recipes are offered in a "printer friendly" format, so I have a binder full of internet recipes.
What I really like HG for, though, are the product reviews. New stuff comes out all the time, and most of the time HG is spot on with a positive review of something so I don't waste my money.
Oooo! The caramel pumpkin muffins are FANTASTIC! Give them a try.
YOU'LL LOVE IT!!! Don't worry about seeing it first!!! I ordered it from her website, and I've dog-eared just about every single page with things I want to try.
But, I am a fan of hers, so I might be biased :)
