EDIT: i don't mean MUNCH on, like suck on, i don't just pull out my bag of food and start munching lol. its basically sucking on a candy or two

you could bring a baggie of any veggies you like, or a piece or two of fruit. you could also try those 100-calorie packs of air-popped popcorn, frozen grapes, sugar-free candies, rice cakes, diet coke or anything else of the sort.

wooh frozen grapes is a good idea! thanks!

wow I have never heard of people snacking during church before.  That's a new one to me.
I've just gotta know... do you eat in church to stay awake or because you just get hungry at that time of the morning or because it is the thing to do at your church (we have a video "cafe" section at our church and people do drink coffee, etc.)

Just wondering... idle curiosity.

If you are just trying to stay awake/focused, try Listerine breath strips.

honestly, sometimes its to keep awake, but its also 'the thing to do' lol we always have mentos or Kings or Willheminas peppermints. and thanks for the suggestion, thats..interesting lol

life savers have very few calories.  You don't want veggies, the crunch distracts the preacher and you don't want indidually wrapped candies...same reason.  DH is a minister so we know first hand.

Unwrapped mints, the grapes could work...no bananas the smell is distracting...I say allow 100 calories for yummy candies as a treat...just unwrap them first :-)

yeah i thought the whole veggie thing would be weird, same thing with the banana. and coke? i've never drank in church that'd be wierd lol. 100 cal is a good basis, i like the grapes idea, cause their small, they don't smell and their not noisy haha. thanks for helping! (lifesavers i'm gonna havta buy)

Sugar free Werther's candies are really good.  They taste just like the real thing but are much lower in calories.

How long are your church services that you HAVE to eat during them?! I've never heard of anyone over the age of about five doing that before... I'll occasionally suck on ONE candy if I think my bloodsugar is getting a little low, but it's not hard to last an hour or two without food. Whatever you choose, it needs to be small, quiet, unobtrusive, and non-distracting to the people around you... no crinkly wrappers or crunchy snacks.

Kajikit, really?? at my church EVERYONE has candies, all ages 2-90 something, its common, and thats why i don't wanna give it up, i've tried not eating any candies in church, and i just get antsie, my mouth gets dry etc. i'm not gonna bring a bag of chips in or anything like that, thats just not appropriate. its candies like werthers, mentos, kings, willheminas, but those have ALOT of sugar in it. i think i'm gonna go for the frozen grapes, lifesavers. thanks for all your help guys

Do you mean church or cinema?

Just kidding lol!

I used to go to church but it was church of england so it was quite strict and serious!

xXx

I have never heard of snacking in church, either.  I am Catholic, and you are not allowed anything but water for at least an hour before you receive Communion, so anything would be right out.  I must be strict- my children have never been allowed toys or crayons in church, either.  We gave them their own little missalettes to keep track of what is going on.

I really hate it when little kids have food in church.  I have had spitty chunks of crap on my dresses too many times to count from them turning around in their seats, or wandering in the aisles.  I even saw a child with a happy meal during service one time!  I could not believe it!

eating at my church would get you a lot of sideways glances, even from children!  if i want to receive communion, i have to fast from the last time i slept up until the piece of bread following communion.

it's really weird to me... but maybe raisins?  they're small... or dried apricots?  at least those are really tasty.

The snacking thing is sorta strange, but the no drinking this is also kinda weird.

But this catholic thing of fasting before communion thing has completely thrown me.  I was raised catholic and the thing I remember most was the donut and coffee cart before church!  The was the best thing about church as a kid!  I've never heard about fasting before communion in the catholic church.

Of course I go to church in jeans and t-shirts and raise my hands and shout to the Lord.  We also speak in tounges and prophesy so people probably think we're kinda strange too, but I can deal with that kind of strange :)

shandykat-me too! haha

but i do understand the need for something in your mouth. lifesavers probably are your best bet, i would go for the sugarfree kind.

shandy, i was raised catholic (i'm no longer christian) and i've never heard of fasting before communion either!! i used to always suck on candies in church as a kid, but that was to keep me from dying of boredom.

guess i was a bad catholic! of course...i think it's impossible to not be a bad catholic and still be human hehe :)
The thought of snacking in church is strange to me. When parent's allow their children to snack during our service they get a lot of dirty looks from the older people, and sideways glances from the younger  folks. But I suppose, whatever tradition the church goes by is how it is.

I suppose you could get some dried fruit if you're looking for a healthy alternative -- but watch out for calories. Dried fruit is pretty high calorie and sugar. If you're looking for a lower calorie alternative, try some of those low-cal or sugar-free hard candies. you can get some that are 5-8 calories a piece. Or you can get hard caramels for around 10-15 cal a piece. Just suck on them slowly and they can last a good 15 minutes.
You are going to laugh at this... I was at a discount store today and when I got to the aisle with all the snacks and candies the FIRST thing that came to my mind was you and your question.  All I could do was think, "I wonder which of these things would be good for church?" LOL

I got a kick out of thinking about you trying beef jerky or sunflower seeds. grin

haha!!! thats awesome, wow i could not eat beef jerky or sunflower seeds in church lol! that'd be too wierd, i dunno  what the big deal is tho, its so normal to suck on a candy at my church lol never thought i'd get these reactions..lol
