Welcome (Sorry we're closed to new members until the group is smaller)
Edited for Week 2: July 13 - 19
Welcome to the Wagon Jumpers weekly thread. We are a group of CC members who have identified that one of our main challenges with achieving our weight loss, maintenance or general health goals is consistency.
This thread is designed to encourage long term commitment to our goals by publicly declaring them and asking the other members of this thread to hold us accountable.
Each member on this thread (listed below) has agreed to check into the thread at least once per week. If any member does not check in by the end of the week, we ask all members to politely and positively PM that member and encourage them to make a post and stay on track (or get back on track).
If you would like to be a member of this thread please see the guidelines below and send me a PM if you are still interested (there may be a waiting list).
Managing Motivation
The original idea of Wagon Jumpers was to create a close community where participants could get to know each other and hopefully form virtual-life and perhaps even physical-life bonds to create a support network as they attempted long term weight loss.
The good news is the idea caught quickly. The bad news is that it became more of a list group and less of a community.
With one organizer and many posters, I felt overwhelmed trying to send out so many reminders, and; members felt overwhelmed trying to read so many posts, no one was really getting to know each other so the purpose of the group was lost.
I was hoping that some extra hands could help manage the first problem, but now I realize that doesn't address the second problem of members staring down a 100+ post thread that they feel too tired to read... and really... that's not motivating.
New Structure - July 7th, 2008
Effective this week I am reducing the "official" participation in Wagon Jumpers to 30 people. I was stretched at 50 people and I think 30 will be a good number. I think this will also encourage people to think though why they want to be part of this group, what they hope to get from the group and give to the group and for us all to learn these things about each other.
No one will be deleted now unless they have requested that I do that. The scary numbers have gone. I will still keep an MIA list for 3 weeks (as we all need forgiveness) and I will keep a waiting list. Once the group drops below 30 members I will ask people on the waiting list if they are still interested in joining the group.
General Guidelines for Joining
1. Are you a wagon jumper?
Do you know how to loose weight, you often have success but then you find yourself loosing interest in your plan, or sabotaging your plan. It's not the "how" to loose weight that is the problem, it's the "how" to stay motivated.
2. Do you have a long way to go?
This group is designed so that members can get to know each other and support each other. Ideally you are planning to be a CC member and part of this forum for at least 6 months or more to achieve your goals and hopefully stay in motivation for a further 6 months or more.
Yes. This is, a long term plan.
Still interested? Send Supersized a PM.

I wasn't sure if you were answering the weekly topic or not, you seem to have a detailed plan on what you need to do to loose the weight you want to loose, but I didn't see anything about how you are going to keep yourself motivated to stay on that plan.
Whoops, I guess I jumped the gun... well, either way, my motivation is my wedding next September. The very thought of how many photos will be taken at the ceremony and the reception is excellent incentive to keep me on the straight-and-narrow (so to speak).
Little success, little failure.
I stayed easily within calorie range yesterday and even made some tasty baked cajun fries. Unfortunately after a week of being sick and not going to the gym while sick (for my sake and others) even though I'm not completely better, I'm better enough and I used the not completely better as an excuse not to drag my butt out of bed this morning rolled over and went back to sleep. So looks like I'm going to have to work on that getting up in the morning bit again.
KittyKat596 Good consistency plan, I have trouble looking forward to the results personally, although when they do come, they are super motivating.
The Vitamin Dominatrix That's a pretty strong motivation!
Hello everyone!
I have really enjoyed being part of this group (even though I struggle to read everyone's posts and I'm too shy to jump in and converse with everyone). I'll try to do better and to step out of my shell more.
By the way, I'll be on vacation next week (Canada!!!) so, I may not get a chance to post. I'll try to get in there, but if you don't hear from me....I'll be thinking of you.
I am going to do my very best to keep up with all my goals while on vacation.
THIS WEEKS QUESTION:
What is your consistency plan to be on the wagon in 1 month?
Your consistency plan is how you are going to be following your weight loss, health or maintenance plan long term, it may be something like: I am setting 2 week goals, every time I am on track for two week's I ________.
As far as my consistency plan for weight loss......I am going to do my best to eat between 1200 - 1500 calories per day and I am going to keep my regular workout routine of 30 minutes of running 3-4 times a week and start adding some weight lifting and maybe even some yoga.
I hadn't really thought about a reward system as I go along. The only real reward I have planned is to buy myself a cool, private tattoo when I hit my goal. LOL!! I think everytime I hit a 5 pound weight loss, (I liked that idea in the earlier post someone else did) I'll treat myself to something like a manicure or new clothes.
To be honest, I haven't weighed myself since that time that I gained the two pounds after working so hard. I understand that muscle weighs more than fat and all, but it was hard to deal with. That was on June 16th so, I plan on weighing myself on July 16th. I was very excited to hear that my husband is starting to notice that some inches are coming off.
YEAH!!!!! I have also noticed my pants are just a little bit looser.
Super-sized: If there is anything I can do (or stop doing) to make this forum easier for you...please let me know. I have NEVER posted on anything like this before so, this is all new to me. I'm happy to help in anyway! I'll even volunteer to help check on people if you like, but I am still pretty new so, whatever you decide. For the record, I think you do a fantabulous job!
NOTE: Planning for weight loss and planning for consistency are different things.
Your weight loss plan may be something like: I am going to eat _____ cal/day and exercise for ______ min ______ days per week.
Supersized - I have a very unique dog. His mom was a minature american eskimo and his dad was a golden retriever. He sort of looks like a very tiny golden retriever :) He's pretty cute but of course I'm biased.
I completely understand how time consuming it must be for you to monitor and update this group, therefore, if I cannot committ to the group, i.e I miss a week, I will make my exit. I do plan on staying though as I think this group is definitely helping me stay "on the wagon". I also decided to take one of your suggestions and I am not going to weigh myself until Monday of next week. I am a daily weigher by habit but I find that sometimes when I see a drop in my weight I then think it's ok to have a little treat and that can snowball, so I'm only going to weigh once a week and if I can drop that to once every 2 weeks and still see success then all the better.
Thanks again for starting this group, we appreciate it :)
hurley_mom - congrats on vacation. where in Canada are you going? I'm Canadian (as is supersized if I read the status right
). Just curious.
Hurley_Mom I think rewards or mini-goals are key to staying on the wagon. I try to really encourage people to think about rewarding based on effort or on something other than the numbers on the scale precisely because of how discouraged people feel when they see numbers either go up or not go down which could actually be a very good sign because of muscle building, which will, in the long run, help you loose more fat and loose size. I figure the best feeling is those clothes bit looser, that tells me more than any scale can.
I think at this point I just freaked out a bit about this ever expanding list of people and that capping the group size is probably the best answer for everyone. I've stopped freaking out, you won't have to worry about reading zillions of posts of an ever increasing body of new people that you can't keep up with, and we should all get to know each other better. We'll keep the rules of the group the same, post once per week, and if you notice at the end of the week that someone hasn't posted please send them a polite and positive e-mail to encourage them to keep going.
And, yes, Raven21 is right, I am a cannuck, so when are you visiting? And where?
Raven21I think I've actually seen one like him (High Park area?) I think most dogs are cute, who can't!
Don't worry about signing off if you are going to miss a week, that's part of life (and hopefully involves a vacation) just send me an e-mail with the dates you will be away and I will post it so we don't send you a bunch of unneeded reminders.
I used to be a daily weigher, I was firmly of the belief that tracking and graphing my weight daily really did motivate me. I still can't firmly say that it didn't or wouldn't, but I can say that I typically lasted not much more than 3 months and I'm currently sitting at 20 weeks having not weighted once. I'm now finding that not weighing is really forcing me to look at myself, and to feel how the clothes are fitting and that is keeping me going. I'm just hopeful that when I do weigh now that it doesn't demotivate me.
Where in Canada are you from?
My consistency plan is to THINK more about being consistent. I think about it some but I need it to be one of my main thoughts each day. Once it's a main thought, it will be much easier to stay consistent. Every time I think negative thoughts like "well, that's what I want to eat so I'm going to eat it" or "I don't feel like working out," I'm going to immediately re-focus and get back to a consistent thought process of "I need to eat something different" and "I need to work out."
To Raven21 and Supersized: I am heading to Vancouver with my mom (from Florida), hubby and 3 girls. We were going to Victoria, but the Ferry price for all of us quickly changed our minds. LOL!!!
To Supersized: I hadn't really thought about the goal setting that way. You make a great point. Perhaps I'll change it from rewarding at a loss of every 5 pounds to rewarding for "staying at it" every two weeks. Thanks for the advice!
Supersized -- I am a recovering daily weigher, too. I used to really find it motivating to weigh every day, but that was early in the game when weight was just melting off and there was some sort of positive reinforcement almost every day. Then that phase ended and weighing daily became a source of frustration and self-doubt. I weighed last Friday and was greeted by an unexpectedly pleasant and encouraging number. That secured me on the wagon very tightly! :) Now, as you, I am somewhat hesitant to weigh again for fear I will be disappointed and, therefore, demotivated. I know the scale is not the end-all, be-all, but a disappointing number takes me a while to overcome . . . seasoned as I may be at this by now.
As far as an incremental reward system, I am really struggling with that. I am up approx. 20 lbs from my lowest (on this journey), so I don't really feel like I deserve a reward while I am still "in the red." Know what I mean? Right now, I'm more in the "put my head down and get the work done to get back to where I was" mode. When I get there, I'll feel more like celebrating. I'll have to give the reward system more thought, I guess.
So, anyway, I am proud to report I have exercised twice already this week. Two 30 minute sessions on the treadmill. Yay! The ankle barks at me a bit, but nothing I can't handle. At this point, the movement, I believe, is good for it.
I got to "interface" with the activity log for the first time last night. Very inspiring! Now, quick question: Does the "calories burned" number take into account my weight, etc. as entered in my profile? Or is that just a general estimate? I notice CC estimates a bit higher than my treadmill . . . but my treadmill does not know my weight. Anyone know? Thanks.
Shannyshan I want to make sure I make a big deal about your point of "thinking" more about consistency. It sounds like such a little thing, but it really is (in my books) key. We all know and discuss a lot about calorie intake, burn rations, if we are getting enough protein, too much carbs, exercising enough, too much, weights vs. cardio etc... etc... and I would guess (or at least it has been my experience) that as long as I am making a reasonable effort in those areas the fine tuning can help, but it is just that - fine tuning. What really really REALLY makes a difference is if I am making the effort day in and day out over a long period of time.
Sure I can loose 7 lbs in a week if I haven't exercised or eaten right in a few months and I've gained 14 lbs (if not more). But loosing the weight that I wasn't happy at before I gained those extra (more) 14 lbs is going to take time and consistency. More than a few good meals, or a few good days in a landscape of "cheat days" or "tomorrow it will be different". I've been a star "sprint" dieter for a long time. It's time to try this marathon thing.
Hurley_Mom WOW is the Ferry that much? I'm in Toronto so you're on the other side of the country for me. My brother is in school at University of Victoria which is beautiful and full of bunny rabbits! Vancouver is great though (I say begrudgingly as a Torontonian) and if you are into it some of the best Asian Fusion Vegetarian Organic food in the World (IMO).
Jilly_Bean I know what you mean about just wanting to "get it done" and then reward. That's one of the main reasons I didn't weight myself when I started this time I was 2 sizes larger than I was at my heaviest weight and I was sure that was just going to throw me into another crash diet that would see me out the other end perhaps another 2 sizes larger after I recovered from the crash diet. I think the suggestion I would say is sometimes 20 lbs can take it's time (at 2 lbs a week that is 10 weeks, or close to 3 months) if you find yourself lacking motivation or even starting to make that plan to stay motivated and reward your efforts before you fall off the wagon in despair.
I'm not 100% sure on the activity log, since I haven't used it yet this round and they may have changed some things, it may be a good question to raise on the fitness forum. My understanding is that the activity log does take into account your weight but not your activity level. The recommendation I was given was to make sure my activity level was set at sedentary, and then log my activity items so that I got the most accurate CC estimate for activities. That being said I was also told that if my cardio equipment took into account age, and weight and monitored heart rate that I should use the information on the equipment not the CC estimate.
Thanks, Supersized. I did set my activity level to sedentary when I sprained my ankle. I guess I won't rush to change it, then.
Last summer, I read a book called (something like) Overcoming Compulsive Eating. Not because I am a compulsive eater, but because I was intrigued by the "throw out your scale" philosophy of the book. The author was a huge proponent of throwing out your scale (literally!) and going strictly by how you feel and how you look, etc. I tried that. I went months without weighing and worked hard at exercising and eating right . . . trying to get a feel for a healthy lifestyle without the "cheat sheet" of a scale to affirm how I am doing. I came to the conclusion, I am numb to myself right now. Yes, I know I feel better when I eat right and increase activity . . . I can feel that. But I cannot innately tell when I've lost weight. My clothing is forgiving enough, I could swing 20 lbs in either direction and still wear most of them. I have spent years trying not to see myself as I truly am, that now I don't think I really see myself at all. I lost 70 lbs (54 lbs right now) and I, honestly, didn't see much difference. It is difficult when you are not *friends* with your body, when you don't know it very well . . . or you know only the negative aspects only too well. I'm working hard to find a happy medium. I need to re-establish a trusting relationship with my body, but I also need the reassurance of the cold, hard numbers . . . you know, "trust, but verify." ![]()
Anyway, back to my little experiment last summer with not weighing at all. I started that for the same reason you did . . . terrified of the number I might see and how I would handle it. After months of "wagon riding," I finally weighed and the number was what I had been at the last time I weighed. So I had undone the damage, but will never know how much damage. That cuts both ways . . . I didn't have to face the *bad* number, but I also, to this day, don't know exactly how much I accomplished, either.
Off to calculate the calories in tonight's pasta salad . . .
I guess I'm a compulsive weigher myself. I don't actually have a scale in my apartment, but I always weigh myself after a workout at the gym.
When I'm home however, we have a scale and I find that weighing myself every day sometimes discourages me more than anything. I figure weighing myself every couple of days is a lot better than every day, for me anyway.
Then I always have to keep in mind that I'm probably gaining muscle at a similar rate that I am losing fat, so the pounds don't quickly drop off.
My week so far has been really good. I've been staying under my calorie goals, and worked out an hour each day. :)
hehe, i like the "sprint dieter" vs "marathon" dieter comparison. it is true, sprinting can be done pretty easy sometimes, but we need stamina for the marathon...
I'm trying to stop the weighing in everyday. It's been 2 days now. I weigh in tomorrow for my "monthly" weigh in. I compare from the 9th of one month to the 9th the next month. It really helps. But after that, no more weighing in for a few weeks. I HAVE to get away from it!
I also measure on the 28th of every month. I like doing that! Since October I've lost 39 1/2 inches. Now THAT'S motivation if I ever saw it! hehehe
Supersized - I've been through a plateau already. The 5 lbs I mentioned is for the last 3 months. I've been on this journey for almost 9 months now. So I suppose I'm a marathon "dieter".
I don't say I'm on a "diet" though. This is my life now. I eat better (most of the time), and I exercise. That is something I will do for the rest of my life.
momof2funykds - I totally agree with the idea of it not being a diet and being a lifestyle. That is how I am looking at it now too. If I just stop and think before meals and snacks about what I am about to eat I always make better choices.
I'm not sure if I could go a whole month without weighing myself but I am going to try and go a whole week, weighing on Mondays. I was walking my dog this morning, as usual and on the way back I really had to convince myself that weighing in this morning was not a good idea. Maybe after I get used to weekly weighins I can go a whole month :)
Supersized - I also like the idea of it being a marathon and not a sprint. I am hoping that next year I will be fit enough to run the half marathon in my local town. I am from Nova Scotia. Not a very big town that I live in, but our town actually hosts the annual Nova Scotia Marathon/Half Marathon every year and we have people come out from all around the world for it. It's pretty cool to watch but hopefully next year I won't just be watching!
jilly_bean - I'm having some issues with the incremental reward system a well. I'm not sure what is a "fair" increment. I think I want to lose about 20 pounds but sometimes I think 30 would be better. So is every 5 pounds incremental? Every 10?
hurley_mom - Have fun in Vancouver! It is a beautiful city and you'll have a blast. Coming from a small town I really enjoyed myself when I visited and they do have ALOT of choices when it comes to cuisine (yes and healthy stuff too), you could also go hiking through parks etc and it's quite a hilly city in spots as well so walking around will give you lots of exercise. Hmmmm...now I'm thinking I really need to book some vacation time ![]()
Oh and on a consistency note, I am going to try the 2 week plan as suggested by almost everyone on here. If I can be consistent for 2 weeks I should see a difference and if I don't think I have journeled everything so I should be able to pinpoint what I need to change.
I'm not doing well on the getting to the gym now after I've been on vacation and then sick. I have to admit I think I've binned it for the week, the only day I could make it to the gym this week would be tomorrow, but then I'm off white water rafting for the weekend and I'm hoping that will involve some exercise. The plan is to be back at the gym absolutely no later than Tuesday next week and preferably Monday if I'm not physically dead from rafting.
Jilly_Bean I think ultimately we each need to find what works for each of us as individuals, and that will inevitably be different somewhat or quite a bit for each of us. While I was terrified that if I did away with the scale for a long period of time that I would have exactly that experience I am happy to say that I have found the opposite. I don't know if it's because I thought a pound should look like more, or less or different. But when I was weighing and measuring I just couldn't feel my body and I was always frustrated with it.
I also have to admit I've tried the "I'll just eat healthy and exercise" and not worry about the numbers before, but I have not been as accountable, so even though in that case I was doing a good job of working out I was eating wwwaaaayyyy too much when I really took a hard look at it, so I've figured out in my case while I'm not looking at the scale for me, the food scale is an absolute must otherwise I just let the portion sizes creep up and up and up.
I think part of it is definitely not having a lot of forgiving clothing, my office wear is not very stretchable and I need to not have to buy a new blazer and trousers again this year and there are some interview suits that look great if only I could fit into them.
While I won't know "how much damage" I've done exactly I figure I'm going with the conservative estimate that 1 size = 10 lbs, so I'm guessing that I reached 225 lbs, before I started this, that is 20 lbs heavier than my heaviest actual weighed. So it's a starting point I'm satisfied with.
KittyKat596 I agree if you are weighing regularly you really need to keep a head on your shoulders about your body going though cycles and the heavier weight of muscle mass than fat mass.
Momof2funykids 39 1/2 inches! That's great! I agree one reason I used the term "sprint dieter" and marathon "thing" is that while I agree that most dieting is a sprint, which I would argue is why it doesn't work long term. Really loosing weight and keeping it off, staying healthy and fit for life is a choice about how we live long term, not a temporary quick fix. I think when I think of a marathon runner they train year round, and are dedicated usually for life to their sport, so I think the analogy stands, and serves to remind me that I need the dedication of an athlete to really achieve my goals here.
Raven21 The maritimes are the one are of Canada that I haven't visited (at least in my memory - we were there when I was a baby), it's definitely on my "to go" list. If you are thinking about the incremental rewards I would suggest what you seem to have come to at the end of your post to focus on time spent well. Rewarding yourself for staying with it until you reach your goal. That way not everything is number focused so if you don't reach 20 lbs as quickly as you want to then you know you are really putting effort in (or need to put more effort in), and when you do reach your 20 lb goal you can decide if you want to keep going and feel good about the rewards and success you've built by being consistent and knowing you can continue to do it rather than feeling like you set your goals short.
Momof2funykds you are doing great. Keep up the good work and I like your reward system. Another thing I thought about was give myselg 10 bucks for every pond that way I can have a shopping spree for myself when I am done this whole weight loss journey.
Peera it is good to switch up things every so often. The point is stick with things and motivate yourself. Looking forward to the good news.
Jilly_bean good job with staying on the wagon espeically over the holiday. Good luck with your goals for the week.
Raven 21 I understand about falling off the wagon on the weekends. Sorry I can't help with any ideas but you are doing great.
KittyKat596 welcome back. Good job on making health options while away. Keep up the work.
Hurley_mom enjoy Canada. Good plan. You might want to up your calories some if you weight training becomes more intense. I like the idea of a tatoo. I said I was going to get one for my weight loss journey. It was going to me in a flower that has started to bloom to symbolize a new path.
Supersized on not weighing for 20 weeks. I am suppose to weight every four week but I still get on the scale and look however nothing counts until the actual weigh in so I don't freak out.
ShannyShan you can carry little fake ants around to remind you not to have negative thoughts. ANTS=Anti Negative Thoughts. I had to do when I started school freshman year because I had negative thoughts and the ants reminded not to be that way.
Jilly_bean good job on the exercising. You should reward regardless. Every step in the right direction should be rewarded.
Well so far so good this week. I have been getting my exercise done and eating within calorie. People have been telling me that it looks like I have lost some weight which is cool since I am just coming off a hiatus. My clothes have gotten a little lose. I have been checking myself out but I can't tell. At the end of this month I have to measurements and my official weight so I will find out then. I'll check back in later this week. Chow.
So i fell off the wagon pretty hard in the last 2 weeks. My motivation level has been terrible....i have absolutely no motivation. I've been feeling so down about my self lately and i think not working out isn't helping. Plus i haven't eaten the healthiest. I know i need to get on track but it's been hard to just do it. Today, so far, i've done pretty good. I plan to get home after work and get some exercise in.
I think in these last 2 weeks something alot of you said finally clicked. I need to look at what i'm doing as a life style change not a diet. When i think of this as a "diet" i feel guilty if i eat something that's not healthy even if i only have a bite i still feel guilty. I need to continue to understand that i just need to eat healthier and smaller portions and every once in a while when i decide to eat something not so healthy that its not that big of a deal. I think that's the only way that i will be able to keep going with my "lifestyle change". So i'm starting over, yet again.
I do like the idea of giving yourself little awards for hitting goals, maybe that will help me out too....i'll need to give that a try.
Good Luck to everyone....hopefully next time i post i'll be able to tell you all how well my "lifestyle change" is going :o)
To put it simply, my motivation is consistently feeling and seeing my clothes become looser. That tells me that my eating/exercise plan is paying off! I am trying to avoid weighing myself too often as the fluctuations tend to frustrate me.
I have been out of town for the last three weeks and found that all the food I thought I missed during my 4 week cleanse, I didn't actually miss so much. In fact, eating some of it made me feel just plain nasty! So another motivation for me is just feeling good! If I eat well and exercise regularly, I feel great and it keeps me on the wagon, if I make a poor food choice, I feel awful and it's a reminder of why I am making better choices in the first place.
Aside from those, I do have a long term reward in the planning stages to help even further. My husband and I are planning a vacation early next spring to an all inclusive resort in Mexico with friends. If the idea of wearing a fabulous swim suit on the beach isn't motivation enough, nothing is:)
well today was my monthly weigh in....not too great! I've lost 2 lousy pounds in the last month. I've been going to the gym, but my eating at night has crept back. I know that's a no-no in order for me to lose weight. I feel pretty lousy about it. So much hard work at the gym and not much to show for it.
I'm staying off the scale for 2 weeks now. I'm going to try REAL hard to wait til the 23rd to hop back on! The fluctuations really discourage me.
tiegurl - 10 bucks for every pound! WOW!!! You're going to have one big shopping spree coming your way! :D
supersized - rafting.....hmmmmm I don't know if I could ever get the courage to do it! lol Now it's out of the question (with back issues), but even b4 that all happened I don't know if I would try it! I hear it's alot of fun though. Good luck staying in the raft!!! lol
