rapid 2nd trimester gain
Hi
Im 24 weeks today...so far I have gained 20 lbs, 10 in the last month. I havent changed my eating habits and while my activity level has decreased (excersized intensely before pregnancy) I don't seem to be eating more calories by any means....I'm worried that this will continue and not only be unhealthy for me and baby but leave me with more to lose after delivery...
don't worry honey :) some women experience these growth spurts but it moderates over the 9months as long as you have a healthful diet. i'm no doctor/nutritionist but IMHO i think it's because as expecting mothers our body-fat/water/blood ratios change in preparation for the growing foetus and eventually breastfeeding.
i was very active pre-preg & had to totally cut out exercise due to a low lying placenta, but i kept on making healthy choices with my food. On the day i gave birth i was +50 lbs my pre-pregnancy weight, at the time i was horrified by the number on the scale, now 9 weeks after i've already lost 34.5 lbs :)
My second pregnancy was the same way. Gained 5 pounds in the first trimester, 30 in the second and next to nothing in the third.
I lost all the baby weight by 16 weeks postpartum.
That sounds exactly like me. I am really worried about gaining too much weight and not being able to lose it after my daughter is born. At my last appointment I had gained 8 pounds in a month, which was more than I had gained in the past. I have gained a total of 19 pounds(last time I checked, which was at my 24 week appointment). My doctor said it is normal to have a growth spurt during that time and to just make sure I keep trying to eat healthy and exercise. Sounds like you are trying to eat healthy and that's the most important thing!
You're not alone. I'm 23 1/2 weeks along and up 18 lbs. I only gained 2 lbs the first 12 weeks and then gained 7 lbs between then and my 16 week appointment, and another 5 between that and my 20week appointment. and now another 4 since then. ugh. I'm trying to eat healthy and not over do it but it just keeps coming on! Its hard to see the numbers on the scale continue to rise.
I know it's easier said than done, but try not to worry about it. In each of my 4 pregnancies, I gained around 50 lbs. It didn't matter if I didn't exercise at all, exercised moderately, ate everything in sight or was carefull with what I ate. Oh, and I was hungry all the time (10 pm trips to the fridge were very common). Listen to your body. If you are hungry, eat. Try to make good choices, but don't deprive yourself. Move as much as you feel comfortable with. The weight will come off. I have lost 30 lbs in the 10 weeks since my 4th daughter was born, and with all my pregnancies have gotten back to prepregnancy weight by 9 mo postpartum. Good luck!
