spotting, but not period? pregnant?

Quote  |  Reply

Could I be pregnant? ... well, I mean, how likely is it that i'm pregnant?

I've had unprotected sex with my boyfriend a few times, and I checked an online ovulation calculator, and I had sex around the time I was probably ovulating.

Now I'm almost a week late for my period, but here's the weird thing.

I've been ..."spotting" i guess you could call it. On the day I was supposed to get my period I had pink spotting.. like minuscule amounts of spotting.. i checked often.. and then I went a couple days with NOTHING.. and then I had another day of light spotting. and still nothing..

is this a symptom of pregnancy? Or am I having the lightest period known to mankind?

When an egg is fertilized, it typically happens in the fallopian tubes. The fertilized egg then travels into the uterus where it implants in the uterine wall. This implantation can cause spotting, or implantation bleeding. The time between an egg being fertilized and implantation is somewhere from 5-10 days.

So, it's somewhat likely that you are pregnant. It's also possible that you're not. The stress over a missed or late period can cause it to be delayed further or even skipped entirely.

The only way to know for sure is to take a home pregnancy test or visit your doctor for a blood test (or urine test).

Edited to add: I like to eat, eat, eat eeples and beeneenees! Sorry, my daughter makes me listen to Raffi all the time.

^^^ lol at your edit!!! that's exactly where I got my username.. I loved that song when i was a kid.

Thank you so much for such a quick reply! I had heard of implantation, and I was thinking that might be what's up... although in this possibly hypothetical pregnancy, conception would've been 2 weeks ago (14 days.. the limit you put was up to 10 days after conception)... so i'm just going to wait it out, and whatever happens, happens.

Hah, I listened to Raffi as a kid, too, which is why my daughter does now.

Spotting can occur any time during a pregnancy. My sister-in-law had spotting when she was 8 weeks pregnant. I had spotting on and off over the course of my entire first pregnancy.

Some causes of spotting with a missed period are:

stress, infection, cycst or polyp, pregnancy, missed/late birth control pill, missed ovulation, rapid or excessive weight loss/gain, certain prescription drugs and starting or discontinuing birth control pills.

Best of luck!

I have had spotting periods twice (and freaked out both times, which was... "fun"...).  Both times it was caused by an allergic reaction to a type of... blood catcher, would you call it?  In any case, I just wanted to put out there that not all spotting or missed periods are because of pregnancy (to help calm you).

Also, my mom has missed periods, like I have, and there was nothing wrong with her.  Sometimes it just happens to people /shrug.

Good luck!

I will say that I experienced light spotting around the time I should have gotten my period, but nothing like a normal period around the time I got pregnant.  I realized later it was implantation bleeding.

If you want to be sure, go ahead and do a pregnancy test.  Some of the good ones can tell you as soon as five days before you even miss your period.

Spotting like that can be a sign of pregnancy and from what you describe there is a good chance you could be pregnant (not that you are, but could).  Why dont you just take a test and know?  You dont need to wait for your first morning urine and you can get relatively inexpensive tests just about everywhere.  The plus/minus tests have a higher failure rate, the two line ones are typically easier to read, and then the digital ones are the simplest but less sensitive.  However, if you are pregnant you should be far enough that any test should be sensitive enough.

If you are curious, check out peeonastick.com for info about different pregnancy tests.

Thank  you guys so much! I'm officially a whole week late for my period.. if I AM pregnant, I am going to keep it (I am only 18 years old, and this is definately not on my to-do list at the moment).. I don't believe in abortion. Please no lectures about birth control stuff.. I was on the pill, but forgot a few doses so my boyfriend used a condom, but it BROKE.. of all the rotten luck. As I said before, I'm going to try not to stress, whatever happens, happens.

If I haven't gotten it in a couple of days, I'll swing by the store and buy a test...

Well-- waiting to test seems a little avoidant.  I got pregnant at 18 (she is 9 now) so I know it isnt the end of the world (sure makes it harder though).  I have found the best way to make a period come is to take a test.... if you are really going to wait, then go ahead and start vitamins and make sure you arent drinking or using caffiene or medications that can cause problems.  At a week late you are "five weeks" pregnant (if you are) and this is the time the brain and all the  nifty stuff is developing and can be interfered with..

Good luck and if you ever want to chat about being a young mom and getting through it--- feel free to pm me.  Assuming of course that you just dont have a wonky period.

Seriously, get a test.  Today.  And then tell me.  Because im nosy.  :)

lol! I do have to agree here. Take a test. I was pregnant at 21 and avoided taking a test in hopes my period would start. It's kind of like "if I can't see them, they can't see me" mentality that kids have.

Also, good for you for being an unusually responsible 18-year-old :) Using backup when you know you messed up your pills is something a large number of teens wouldn't do. It takes a lot of maturity to bring a child into this world and you seem like you have a level head! Best of luck!

bier.. so true!! lol...

so. I bought the test today. an hour ago. I'm going to wait a couple of hours so my urine is more concentrated... and so I can process the fact that I actually bought the pregnancy test. I had kind of figured that I'd get my period before I actually ended up buying the test. so... I am very very nervous right now.

THANK GOD I have a loving boyfriend that is with me every step of the way. I spent the weekend with him, and he knew something was wrong, and he asked me what was bothering me. I told him I was a week late, and he was so sweet. He said he would be supportive of me whatever my decision was. We have been dating for about 2 years.. and now that he has reacted in this calm, mature way.. I know that he is quite a catch. he's such a sweetheart, and I'm so lucky.

thank you guys so much for your support. I will keep you updated! (and bier, thank you for what you said about me being responsible. If I am pregnant, I will have been one of those women who have defied the odds and are in that 1% or something!!)

*whew* deep breaths. I will let you guys know!

I was taking birth control pills when I got pregnant with my first. Vanessa1031 was as well. Odds can be defied.

If I remember correctly, the best time of day to take a pregnancy test is in the morning because that's when there's the highest concentration of the pregnancy hormone in your urine.

Your boyfriend sounds like a stand-up guy. I was lucky enough to have one of those, as well.

Remember, having a child at a young age is not the end of the world, even if it may feel that way. I remember feeling that way after finding out I was pregnant. It's just the end of the world as we know it but the beginning of a new one that is infinitely better.

Definitely let us know! Good luck!

i drank three bottles of water to make my pee so diluted then took a test-  and it was still positive.  a little hint of the HGH hormone and it will come back with an answer.  this was after I took 5 tests that came back positive LOL after the "first thing in the morning" test.  but i agree that the first test should be when you have more concentrated urine.

and bier is right-  on the pill for a whopping 8 years; messed up two pills and BAM.        ;     JULIA!!!!!  my love of my life....

like drea; i need to know.  i think we all need to know now LOL.

Now that I've read this post, I need to know too!!  I've never been pregnant, but can say that I had a scare with my boyfriend (now husband) in college, and as soon as I peed on the stick (from the test), I wiped and my period magically appeared!!  Good luck!!!!

So waiting with baited breath!!  I hope you are doing ok, whatever the results.

This post will be brief. I don't have much time, there are people around right now. I'll go into greater detail about my feelings etc. later tonight. I'm pregnant.

Congrats!  (this board is slow at night so I thought I would say it again!)

You can do this!

Congratulations, and try not to be too scared.  I was a wreck when I first found out and tried to keep it to myself.  The sooner you tell someone close to you, the better.

Let me know if you have any questions or just want to express some anxieties.

Thank you EVERYONE for being here.

So I guess the spotting I was experiencing was the implantation bleeding!

It's been over 8 hours since I took the test, and I have had emotions ranging from extremely anxious and scared to even happy or excited. This whole experience is so strange to me. I can't believe I am "that girl".. the one who gets pregnant as a teen. Thank God I only have 2 more months of high school until I graduate.. I won't be showing (at least not much anyway) by then.

I will be taking another "just in case" test tomorrow morning.. but I don't think the results will be any different.

I have told my boyfriend and my best friend. They are both so supportive and kind. They even made me laugh a little bit... This whole thing is just so surreal. I look down at my (realatively) flat stomach and wonder.. is there really life inside there? Right now the concept is so abstract.

I have been through so much in my life, and I have come out through the other side with every obstacle I've faced. I know I will be able to do the same with this. I know I can do this.

I will set up a doctor's appointment for that 8 week mark.. I am planning to tell my family after the doctor appointment (in two weeks).. after it's "officially" confirmed. What do you guys think about that?

I am looking into resources available to me to make this easier... I am going to try college in the fall.. I don't want this to affect my education. People juggle kids and a job and going back to school all the time.. I know I have the strength and drive to do the same.

I am trying to eat healthy... I am nauseous all the time.. and now i know why! Today I probably got in about 1600-1800 calories.. probably too low.. does anyone have any info about proper nutrition needed during pregnancy? I have come to terms I will have to gain weight... so much for getting in fabulous shape in the summer to fit into my little bikini! But.. that's part of the process. I'm not going to feel guilty about feeding this baby... I already eat healthy foods.. fruits, veggies, lean protein and whole grains make up most of my diet.

Now what do I do? Any thoughts, suggestions, information you guys want to share with me??

Thank you all so much for being here. I really don't know what I'd do without this kind of support.

You are experiencing so many things right now, i for one have no idea. But I like to think of myself as a good resource, so if you need help finding anything--you should be able to get free medical insurance through your state for you and the baby, also childcare assistance, and the possibility of other state assistance. Not sure how much your parents are going to support you? I do think your right to wait and tell them until you know 100% for sure.....Um, as far as eating, I've heard you add appx. 200-400 calories , so if you ate 1600- to 1800 make sure you eat 1800-2100 calories......and keep eating healthy and start taking a prenatal vitamin...Ok I'll be back later..hope more will respond for ya :)

Girl, we will keep on being here for you! Congratulations!

I'm sure what you're feeling is bittersweet. I found it hard to get excited about being pregnant when I didn't want to be. It took several weeks before I really started to get into it.

I was terrified to have "the talk" with my parents. They're VERY religious and telling them that their oldest daughter was pregnant, not married and not finished with college was horrible. Luckily, my in-laws are a psychologist and a child-development professor. They took my parents out to dinner and helped them "cope" with the situation after I told them. I never really had a great relationship with my parents growing up so it made it even harder. I felt so much better after it was out in the open, though. My mother had figured it out; you know, motherly instinct. Your plan to speak with your parents after visiting the doctor sounds like a good plan.

During the first trimester, there's really no need to increase your calories; just eat maintenance. Weight gain should be around 5 pounds (or less). After that, my doctor told me to increase my calories by about 150 daily in the second trimester and 300 daily in the third.

Some things that helped me with the nausea were:

Eating a few crackers while still laying down in bed in the morning.

Drinking Crystal Light lemonade (I had an aversion to water).

Sucking on Jolly Ranchers.

The best place to start looking for resources is your state's Social and Rehabilitation Services department (that's what it's called here in KS). There is a WIC program for pregnant women or new mothers:

http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/

Search the internet for "social services" in your state and you should find some awesome financial and medical resources. I used them as much as I could during my first pregnancy.

I know this is a difficult time for you and things aren't going to go exactly as you planned them but, trust me, you are going to LOVE that little baby more than you can even imagine.

There are really cute maternity bikinis out there :)
