We have a great local Jamaican restaurant here in Madison that serves a delicious lunch buffet.  Problem is, I don't have ANY idea how many calories I can expect in:


Curry Chicken

Jerk Pork

Beans and rice

 

When I Googled, I got anywhere from 250-400 calories per 3 oz of jerk pork.  I was able to (kind of) find the beans and rice on CC...but...curry chicken is another story.


Can someone give me a ballpark guestimate?  I don't eat the skin (BLECH!!)

ok. this reply is very overdue! I was just bored looking through forums that mentioned Madison! There aren't very many! Are you refering to Jamerica? They have the best mango rundown tofu ever!!

First,I know you've probbly already eaten at the buffet, but I would like to say that the jerk seasoning isnt very caloric. It has alot of sodium, but its a safer bet that the curry chicken. Second, beans and rice can just be added normally. They are pretty universal calorie wise. Third, what do you do to workout in Madison when it gets soo cold out! I mean I swear there was frost on the lawn already this morning!

Hey Meg!  I was actually talking abot David's Jamaican (on Monona Drive)!  Their food is delicious and, of course, they make virtually everything right there--very little processed foods.  There are plenty of spices and herbs in their cooking (wich is delicious)!


I workout primarily at home and at Elver Park.  During the winter, I will likely just workout at home.  I have an elliptical trainer, stationary bike, and free weights.  I'm planning to start P90X once the snow begins to fall!

 

Do you belong to a gym?  I know practically EVERYONE is a member of the Princeton Club, but I don't like gigantic facilities (with high prices) and a variety of things I will NEVER use.  I did like the Anytime Fitness facilities I toured, however.

 

On a side note, what a HORRIBLE loss to the Buckeyes yesterday.  I spent ALL day downtown tailgating, only to see them lose it in the 4th quarter!!  Yell

Hey guys here is the best I could find.  Im Jamaican and so Im glad you asked this question because I have been struggling to update my food diary since a lot of what I eat is not represented and its hard to find the calorie counts for it.  Anyhow depending on the cut of pork, pork can be high in fat.  Ofcourse traditionally the cuts of pork that are used to make jerk need to have some fat to keep the finished product moist.  If you are dieting got with chicken and do the pork every once in a while.  Where are you guys from.  I now reside in NYC (20yrs) but still rooted in my culture. Oh as for rice and peas...give it up for now or make it your cheat food.. its made with coconut milk, butter, sugar, salt, thyme, scallions, ginger garlic.. It's really not possible to find out the exact calories because how it's cooked depends on who cooks it.  You could ask for a list of ingredients so you can look them up, but they might not be accurate. 

Some examples - was the curry started by using oil - if so, what kind of oil.  If it was coconut, then you'll get higher saturated fat.  It can be low or very high in calories depending on many factors.

Was the chicken cooked with the skin on and was it white meat or dark meat?

Was anything deep fried?  In what?

See what I mean?  I think you're doing the best you can with this.  You don't have to be 100% accurate with everything you log.  Just control your portions and enjoy your food.
