Dating someone with a foreign accent?

Quote  |  Reply

Not a "cute British" accent or a "sexy European" accent.

Would you be embarrassed to date someone with a foreign accent?

i wouldn't be embarrassed.

er...i'm a little confused...

if someone is going to be embarassed by a person's accent why would it matter which accent they had?

and no, of course not. if i liked someone who happened to be from another country i wouldn't be embarassed by their accent just like i hope they wouldn't be embarassed by mine if i visited where they came from. to me that's like saying you'd be "embarassed" because they had a different skin color or something.

some accents i dont like... so it would be the same as dating someone with a voice you cant stand. Wouldnt be embarassed by it though.

Sorry, maybe I should clarify. I just meant that some accents are more socially "acceptable". Let's not lie here -- a British accent is often considered cute or sexy while a Chinese accent may not necessarily be seen as such.

You know, I never actually thought of that....but yea, that's very true.

Personally, I could care less. I think all accents are cute :)

Oh, I don't know.  Yeah, alot of Americans think British accents are cute, but there are alot of people who find other accents cute too.  I just think it depends on the individual.  We all have different ideas of what we find sexy, and I think that would include accents.

What a weird question. I dated a Mexican for a couple of years and I had to translate for him constantly even though he spoke perfect English. My husband is Australian and yeah, it's the cutest thing ever.

Sadly though, we've all noticed he's starting to get a nasty Midwestern twang like the rest of us Chicagoans Cry

Hmmm i think between chinese and british accents...the chinese one is better P:

i think i know what you are saying, but no, i wouldn't be embarassed by someones accent. there are certain accents i guess i wouldn't find particularly attractive, but if i liked someone enough to date them, i'm not going to care what anybody else thinks about their accent. why would i?

Absolutely not!  I might have a problem if they couldn't be understood (not embarrasment), but then I think I would have a hard time communicating with them then and dating probably wouldn't work out so well.

Ironically, this is a very funny subject to me because after I was married, it occurred to me that all the guys I've dated had accents.  I never noticed it before that.

Hubby has a southern accent.  Typically, southern is cute/hot on women and not quite viewed the same way on men (with some exceptions of course).  I like how it sounds, but here's the thing.  I've been married for 3 years and forget he has an accent to me.  Certain words remind me, but I don't hear it anymore.  When you have it all the time, you don't notice it anymore.

But nobody should be embarassed by having an accent.  I know a lot of English as a Second (or more) language that are embarassed that they don't speak properly or pronunciate correctly, etc.  But I love listening to accents of all sorts.  Yes, sometimes it's hard to understand and repeating is necessary, but that's true anywhere you go.

So if you like him, date him.

You're right, lets be honest. I find most British accents atrocious and sometimes a bit pretentious.  Am I embarrassed to date my girlfriend who is British, no, I don't find her accent atrocious or pretentious either, at first when she went full on it was but now she's learned to tell when I have the "wtf o.O" look. I just have to tell her to slow down and speak louder so I can understand because once she goes full on, it's rather hard to understand.  I didn't get on with her because of her accent, I got on with her because of her personality and her.  Stop comparing most Brits to TV Brits :p.  I love Brits with all my heart, infact I study "British English" before I do "American English".  I find most Chinese accents easier to understand then some British Accents.  And if I'm honest, they aren't really "foreign" accents as this is America.  The Heinz 57 country.  I would hope my girlfriend doesn't matter that I have sort of a blunt-southern accent.

Sometimes I say strange stuff just to get here to say "what" because it sounds exactly like my favourite word in the world "w00t" ;), I'll do it over and over too just to get her to say it over and over, she still hasn't caught on.

So long as the accent wasn't so thick I could understand it I don't see what the problem is.

And British and European accents aren't the only ones that are "cute" and "sexy". What about Carribbean accents, they're nice.

no way I think it's adorable! I dated a Brazilian guy for a while and loved his accent :)

Not at all... My boyfriend is Dutch and he has the best accent. :) He doesn't have a thick accent but I can hear it. I'm from Venezuela but I've been told I sound really American, which is fine by me. I've had both British and American people tell me they love the way I pronounce certain words (I can't be perfect! LOL).

While I was visiting in The Netherlands and gave Dutch a try, I kept getting smiles, chuckles or "Oww, how cute/cool!" - I know my Dutch is less than ideal, but I always had a good reaction out of people... I sure hope my boyfriend wasn't embarrassed!

It doesnt matter as long as his accent is understandable...

then again, i, too, am a person with an accent :p

Embarrassed? not at all.  Accents are sexy.  they are a turn-on, and not just brittish.  Indian, jamaican, african..it's all good.

i love accents! i wouldn't be embarrassed at all.

I'm a tried and true Yankee. Started dating a Southern boy. God, his accent was atrocious!!! (Not typical South, because I simply couldn't do it. I can't handle that slow, stupid, drawl. His was a mix of Southern and Norwegian. The only accent my step-father couldn't imitate.)

At times, I have had to translate his accent for other people with heavy accents and vice versa. It's embarrasing.

Eventually, it became hilarious!

And now, after over three years, I don't even notice.

Truth: German accents are ADORABLE.

I love my Jersey boy. Then again, tis' easy for a Jersey girl to love.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
