Did the Depo Shot make you go crazy?

Quote  |  Reply

I've been on Depo Provera for about 9 months now... I noticed I've been kind of bipolar since I've been on it. Sometimes I go crazy on my boyfriend for no reason, or I'd feel sad a lot of times and I wouldn't know why. Is it just me, or do you think it could be the Depo shot? I don't want to be psycho anymore :(

Personally: I've had no side effect from the depo shot. I strongly suggest that you seek a professional opinion. You should consult your doctor either way, imo. Give him a status update on your moods changing like that. It may not be the right method of birth control for you.

Definitely could be the shot. Since it's hormonal based, they can throw you out of whack. You should talk to your gyno about an alternative method if you don't feel right on it.

Well every 3 months I'll go see my doctor, and she gives me a list of symptoms and asks if I've been experiencing any of them. On it is MAJOR depression or mood swings. I can't say I have major depression (which is when you lay in bed all day and cry right??) so I just say no. I guess maybe I'm wrong.

Has any one experienced mood swings with the pill?

I never experienced any side effects with the pill either. :( That doesn't mean that someone else couldn't...though. Everyone is different. I've heard a lot of friends say that their oral contraceptives cause them mood swings. There are probably different types that are less likely than others.

Yes.  I was on Ortho Lo.  Was absolutely miserable the whole time I took it.

progesterone-based BC made me totally psycho (i had a norplant). after not even a year, my ex told me to get the norplant removed ASAP. he got a vasectomy. it changed me that much. my SIL had a norplant and "surgically" removed her own with um... pliers.

i had a neighbor on the shot who went through the same. i believe the shots are also progesterone.

i recommend you start looking for another method. ive been on yaz about 2 years now and it has been the best hormonal BC option for me.

 Wow/Ouch.

I went through a sever depression episode on the shot.

At one point, I became those girls that are dependant on their boyfriends to always be with them. I love when my boyfriend is spending time away (at this point, he was still living at his parents and I had just got my first place from moving out of my parents place) because I got so much more done around the house. But for a few months, the second he walked out the door I was bitter and sometimes would just drop down to the ground in tears. I was so ashamed to behave like that. My doctor blamed it on depression from being on the shot and gave me some anti-depressants. It helped, short term, but I kept having these needy-clingy-depressed episodes for the whole time (3.5y) that I was on the shot for.

I also gained a TON of weight. But that's another story.

I will never go back on the shot. It is more convenient than the pill, but it won't happen.

I have not personally been on depo.  I never will.  Everyone I know that's been on it has either 1) gained a ton of weight 2)gone nuts 3) gotten pregnant.

Personally, I can't handle the combined pill. I turn into a mega emotional disorganised superbitch. I have to have the progestin-only mini pill.

I've never tried depo but heard such bad things about it (weight gain and depression) from friends who have tried it that I'm never going to go there.

ack - i got the depo shot once back in '02 and haven't had my period back naturally since then.  i've been on the pill on and off since then - but without the pill i have no period. :(

it sounds like it's really screwing with you. maybe try a bit of time off the depo and see if you go back to your normal self.

i don't know - regardless, if i were you, i'd switch birth control methods. :/

What birth control method is the most effective, but doesn't make you go crazy at the same time? I don't think I'm that worried about weight gain, since everyone told me I'd gain weight on depo but I actually lost weight on it. I just want to know the most effective kind hmmm

I am kind of moody in the first place, but the depo shot decided to make my face look like a pizza after several acne treatments throughout the years =/  So much for that.

I'm probably going to get back on Yaz.. the thing that I do like about the depo is that I don't have periods at all.  On the Yaz, I would just skip the placebos to skip my period, but sometimes it didn't work perfectly and I still had a couple days of period.

Who knows.. we'll see.  I'm not planning on having any kids, so the fact that the depo shot messes up almost any chance of having a child for several years doesn't really bother me.. in fact, it is comforting.

Loestrin 24 made me go crazy. Hate that fricken pill.

I'm looking forward to a time when I can go off the pill (currently on OrthoNovum 777), but for now, it's the bc method that makes the most sense for me.

Never been on Depo but any type of birth control pill makes me moody as hell.  Depressed, angry, breaky-outy, etc.

On a side note, someone I know has gotten pregnant twice on Depo.

i think you jusr have to try them and see what works for you. i cant tolerate progesterin, but thats all meryl can tolerate. i like yaz, some girls have problems with it.

maybe try an estrogen-based (not a progesterin) hormone next time, see if that works better for you. or maybe the mini pill. or the nuva ring. or an iud. its such a personal preference and everyone reacts differently.

i had to try a few different pills before i landed on yaz. i put my daughter on the pill at 14? i think because she had such horrible painful long periods and she tried 3 different kinds before she found one that she liked.

good luck with that. definitely try something different. talk to your dr about it. no fun. you have to be your own guinea pig. good luck mimi. :)

i have been on the depo shot for about 2 years and i feel like i have been moody, depressed and i get annoyed really easily for the most stupid things as well as crying and getting upset over silly little things. my mum has been on it for years too but she doesnt ever seem to be moody, however maybe my age has something to do with it as im only 17... ive had my suspicions about this making me feel down for a while so i googled it and found that i have a lot of the side effects of the depo which my doctor never thought to mention.. i suggest never going on the depo shot! ever! im getting off it as soon as i can and im going to talk to my doctor about having a different kind of birth control as its ruining me and my boyfriends relationship as im constantly moody and depressed.

Never did depo, but BC pills have made me moody, depressed and irritable. Talk to your doc about other options.

This explains a lot of things.

I feel psycho allllll the time....and mood swings are normal every day life.......but no im not on the depo

for me i think its the kids ..........they drive me crazy as does my hubby
