Do they have a shot with this or is it too universally accepted among teens?  Does it matter?

good approach, but I don't think it will matter. People are never going to stop using that expression.
I dunno, I have a lot of gay friends who don't get offended by it at all, but I personally think people throw it around WAY too much.

those are cool.  thanks for the links.  i don't think it matters whether or not gay ppl are offended by it.  the point is, the phrase is offensive in that it equates w/bad.  and it doesn't matter if "people are never going to stop using that expression."  i definitely know what starcrossdlovex is saying, but it's just not important.  i'm glad that SOMEONE'S saying something about an injustice (esp since i'm sitting on my butt and not saying it).

Absolutely absurd. Time, energy, and money could have been spent on much better things. Political correctness is getting so nit picky and ridiculous that it may just destroy itself.... NOT!

These links are so gayyyyy.

Thought the NOT cancelled out your prior comments but then your closer confused me (and points off for for the obvious Tongue out).

If anything, I'd like to think it makes them consider the implications which have gotten lost in the acceptance of it becomnig generic but are reinforced through it, whether intended or not .

Gay also means happy. Gay also means a homosexual. Gay now also means something is stupid. I don't even see why homosexuals were called 'gay' to begin with. Unless they're all extremely jolly people! :0 The one's I've known seemed about as emo as the rest of us. :P

The word gay has been exclusively reserved for use by homosexuals only I'm sorry to say.

Cptbunny, your outlook is so black. Opps, I meant to say gloomy, I don't want to say black to mean gloomy and depressing because that would be offensive to black people. Yes, I know, what if you said to me, "Your outlook is kind of fortius."

Now I understand how offensive it is to use the word black when referring to something dark and gloomy, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with High Fructose Corn Syrup. YAY!

Dude, your mom won't let you stay out past 9pm, that is so homosexual!

I think they would have worked better if they had a teen tell a teen to stop it.  Like in the cashier ad - if one of them would have been offended by the other's use it would have worked better.  Teens aren't going to really care if they way they talk offends adults or not.

Guess they'll make a commercial for 'that's so retarded' next. I've used both terms, and I don't really care, it's not like I say them around gay or retarded people.

Well, I have a lesbian friend and she isn't offended by that phrase, she thinks it's funny when her friends say it.  I don't say it anymore because using it offends me, for the most part, because I don't like to say insulting things that reference my friends.  I also don't say retarded, but, whatever.

You know.  I have lesbian and homosexual friends too.  They have said that they don't really care about the "gay" word.   It's not the word they have chosen for themselves, so if someone else says it, it doesn't really effect them.

Now, if someone sat there and said "that is so lesbian" or "that is so homosexual" then I could totally understand why someone would be upset.

And if you want to use that justification then it's okay to make racist comments as long as you don't say it in front of whoever you're making fun of.

i don't know anyone who finds it offensive, but people certainly recognise when others say it. it's usually just awkward. personally i think it's really immature and lame, even if you don't mean it as derogatory or anything. when i was 13 or so i realised how silly it sounded and made myself stop.. my 2 cents.

i know people who find it offensive... but its not really a big issue. Just like any other term, it will go out of style soon enough (as gay acceptance becomes more mainstream... right now, at least in america, its still very taboo so the term still works as an insult).

*shrug* give it 10 years and the use will be a lot less

Oh yes.. this one is the best.

Thats so gay

Funny vids - People need to get over themselves ...  I am soooo completely over political correctness.  I don't appreciate being told to knock it off --- It's so gay - and retarded BTW!

Laughing

The expression itself sounds rather stupid, especially when it's said with that ridiculous "Valley Girl" accent that some adopt. It's amazing that the speakers do not realize how silly they sound.

I'm for anything that will - at least - encourage people to think before they talk.

Better to be silent and thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt. ;-)

I think that, yes, the term IS offensive, but I only met about 3 people who thought the term was out-of-line, and they where the SAME exact people who would go on long tangents about how '******* need to stop acting so ghetto and actually RAISE their kids' or be racist about white people. I say if you're going to try and say something is 'un P.C' you should encompass EVERY part of it. Not just to protect homosexuals, but everyone, blacks, whites, Asians, EVERYONE. It's almost demeaning to focus on that one group.

Besides, this slang hasn't been around for that long, give it time and it will go out the window like 'the Bomb', 'tight', 'radical', 'ginchy', 'swell', and other slang terms that are now deemed archaic

I've never said it nor can i say that i've ever heard anyone use  " that's so gay" either.

But I have seen the "retard" comment used on here more than once and I will say that if you used that where I live you would become very unpopular very quickly. There is an  American documentary on over here just now and a couple of weeks ago a young guy who features in it said "I'm not a retard" it was taken off air and re-edited because of the number of complaints the station received.
