Why are girls so bad at video games?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm not talking Barbie doll dress up either, I'm talking fricken Halo, Call of Duty...you get where I'm going here. And before you nerd rage on me, I'm saying *MOST* girls, sure their may be a few who are actually good...but I have yet to meet one.

Man, oh man, do I love video games...but why do I have to suck so bad? A bunch of my friend's dormies(mostly guys) and I got together and played some Halo and seriously...90% of the time I'm dead. It's not like this is my first time playing either, I play it a lot in my spare time.

Is there some psychological reason we girls are so bad at them? I would die to just come close to first place on the # of kills screen one of these days and not last!!@#! =[ I'm so tired of being a sore looooserrrr.

Oops I missed the point of the post!

Just keep practicing playing the video game and you will get better.  Maybe you can find some people who are at the same level as you as far as your skill in playing the game.  It is more fun to play with people who you can fairly compete with!

I probably have said it in this thread already but I have no problems in video games. Half the time, dudes think I'm a dude.

This is just a theory, but in my experience I became truly great in only the things that I put excessive effort and thought into.  Basically I became good at things that I totally obsessed about.

Example:

In 6th grade I was enrolled in a typing class just to see if 6th graders could indeed learn to type (this was in the 70s).  I became so obsessed about doing this "grown-up" activity and being better than the "teacher's pets" that I eventually got to the point of typing in my head everything I heard.  Television, Sunday school prayer, pledge of allegiance... everything.  And I couldn't stop doing it.  In the end I was by far the fastest 6th grader-typist in the experiment at over 40 wpm (on a manual typewriter) and continued until I went over 100 wpm a couple years later.

Maybe the reason most girls are not as good as most guys at video games is because guys have a tendency to obsess over the video games.  Actually guys tend to obsess over more things in general.  Maybe girls are a bit more even-headed and rounded?

By the way, I did get over the whole typing everything in my head thing (but I don't type as fast either).

It's probably either this, or the whole smaller thumbs + smaller brains thing.

I think I agree for the most part. There are plenty of guys who suck at video games simply because they're not as interested as others.

I also do fine at video games. I'm not as good as some, but it's not because I'm female. It's because I didn't spend my entire childhood playing first-person shooters and Sonic the Hedgehog. I read a lot. Everyone I know who's better at gaming than I am put many, many more hours into it for many more years than I did.

I've been playing games since I was 5 (we had atari).

Video games are my biggest hobby and I'm pretty hardcore but I keep it to myself because I feel embarrassed to say I'm a gamer (in real life) simply because I'm female. No other girls that I have met or known play video games like I do (or any at all for that matter). Hell, most guys I've met only play sports on their PS2.

I've owned (and still own most of these): atari, nes, snes, gb, gba, genesis, saturn, dreamcast, n64, gcn, ps1, DS, xbox, ps2, ps3, xbox360, wii. Between me and my husband we have over 500 games (boxes and boxes full of them in storage). :P

I also read a lot growing up and still do now, it's probably my 2nd highest hobby.

I know that I'm no good at video games because my older brother dominated the Nintendo and Sega and never let me play!  So I didn't develop the hand-eye co-ordination that little boys work on for years and years.  I'm alright with the old school controllers, but throw in one of those tiny joystick thingers (analog?) and I'm lost.

So a combination of I'm too old for the fancy new consoles, and I never got a chance to play, being the little sister.

Bah, don't be embarrassed to say you are a gamer.  Games are just interactive novels and movies.  They are art.  I love the 3D cinematics and music that accompany many games.  I'm a big fan of 3D movies, as well.

Speaking of cinematics... World of Warcraft recently released their new Cataclysm cinematic (today, actually).  Tell me this is not art!  They really have a very talented team.  Always producing beautiful stuff.

I rock all those Diner Dash games bitches better recognize

I'm a sucker for time management games. :) I've beaten most of them, they're really fun.

I am too scared to try WoW, because I know I would become addicted to it and it would consume my life. My fiance said he would have to leave me  if I started and I think he was only half joking, lol.

You learn she's female in the NES game at the ending... she was a brunette. She turned blonde in the SNES game (when you died, her suit exploded and you could see her).
