Hotel Suggestions in London?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi everyone,

I'm going to England in July, and I am going to spend a Thurs-Sunday (check out on Sun) in London, then go to Oxford.  Any ideas for hotels in London?  I've never been to England before.  I want something nice, but not tooo expensive, and relatively close to all the touristy things (or at least easy to get to by public transportation).

I know I have seen some Brits on here so I thought I'd ask.

Thanks!

I just spent some time there, and we ended up staying at the Holiday Inn-Kensington Forum. It's right around the corner from Gloucester underground station so it's very easy to travel from. It's still ..not exactly cheap, but considering it's right in downtown London it's actually fairly good comparatively, and it had great ratings. Also, there's a Garfunkles' restaurant right down the street that has some pretty good food.

If you're wanting to go around all the touristy areas, you might want to look into the big bus tours (www.bigbustour.com?). I did that while I was there and it was great.

Hi. I'm currently living in Camden, London.

I recommend the Corner House Hotel, I had a couple of relatives visiting me last week and it's pretty decent. I believe prices might be negotiable depending on how long you wish to stay and in wish weather season. Double room is around £70-90  per day (incl. breakfast), room has a mini-fridge and bathroom, staff is friendly. Single rooms are of course cheaper.

Bus stop is 30sec away and, since the hotel is at Camden Road, all the buses that can be caught along this road go to the main attractions; public transport is efficient...you can also walk 15min to Camden Town Tube Station that can get you/link you to anywhere you need to go!

Since in July it's summer here, I advise you to book in advance (meaning NOW) and ask for a discount if possible.

G'luck!

Funny!! I lived super close to it and walked past it every day on my way to the Kentish town tube when I lived in London.

We had relatives there, the rooms are nice but I thought for a proper London visit it might be fun to be a bit more central. The road is also rather noisy.

I love browsing through TimeOut London for Hotels. http://www.timeout.com/london/hotels/

There are some really spectacular places (man, would I love to have a romantic getaway at the Fox and anchor!) And they also list the cheap (but decent) places.

eta: Just did some browsing: you better book that soon!

2nd eta: Found this website and it offers good deals. It also lists all the hostels - if a room to yourself is too expensive (housing is the single most expnesive thing in London) The Merdiana is one where a friend stayed in and liked. King's cross is crazy busy, though, even though the hotel is in a side street. But it does seem that you need to book soon for reduced prices.

Before you book check with any London-savy CCers to make sure you don't end up in Ealing, Hackney, Croydon etc.  :-)
