Huh?? Why the riots and destruction after a winning game?

It seems to happen all over, with different sports.  Is it just a beer-induced frenzy?? Could it be that simple?  Pack mentality?

Sorry, I just don't get it. Admittedly not a fan of any sort... I would like to see some serious punishment handed out.  DH suggested rubber bullets.  Not sure about that myself.

Got me PO and had to vent. Yell

I lived in KY for 6 yrs and have been to Lexington for the Wildcats games a few times. The answer is simple: alcohol.

I was in Montreal when the Canadiens won the Stanley cup in 1992. I watched the fans drinking long before the game and even more during the game. There was no doubt in my mind that the riot was also induced by alcohol.

I don't get it either.

At Carolina, we just set fires in the middle of Franklin Street (only after we get a permit though) and then jump across them whooping and hollering.

People are barbaric. We like to think we're above the other species on this planet but in reality, the majority of us are not better, if not worse in some cases.

Kentuckians are barbarians.

Tar Heels are awesome.

Tongue out

A lot of people who don't care about sports and didn't even watch the game relish in the opportunity to act like a fool, break a bunch of stuff, and get away with it.  I was in Boston when the Red Sox won the world series.  I saw my friend helping to flip over a truck on tv.  She wasn't drunk.  She didn't watch any of the games.

I don't recall St. Louis ever having a riot over sports.

A Guns and Roses concert, sure, but not sports.

I really never wanted to point out one location or another.

I was wishing the team members or their coach would totally rip the drunken rioter new pie holes.  It really takes something away from the honor they deserve...Football, soccer, basketball baseball, (fieldhockey??)  The players worked hard..

I am totally disgusted by these actions. I heard about what they did in Ky. at the last game and wondered what kind of gang mantality this was. Just wrong.  Maybe tell the fans if they act like this the team will be disqualified from the next game or something. I guess untill someone get hurt nothing will be done.

When I was in college.. the worst thing we even contemplated was cow tipping.  Never got that brazen.  For thrills we would get up at 5 and hike three miles to town for fresh donuts..

Cajun was right.. but it doesn't excuse what happened.. Not in Kentucky not anywhere.  *feels better having vented*

There are three dynamics at work:

1) a few people who purposefully show up at events to provoke the crowd. 2) mob mentality 3) alcohol

For instance, last year's Stanley Cup riot in Vancouver. There was a group of not-organized-enough-to-be-terrorists young guys that had backpacks with lengths of pipe, Molotov cocktails, etc. They were the ones in black that had hoodies and bandanas. They were the ones who began the major destruction. They lit pieces of cloth stuffed in RCMP gas tanks. The alcohol impaired mob of 'let's be at any event regardless if we're fans', followed like little sheep. The actual fans were horrified. I've had the misfortune of being caught in a riot (much smaller in size, compared to Vancouver's). When suddenly people are running past you, yelling, followed by the police literally reading the Riot Act via bullhorn. A volley of tear gas cans will make anyone run. As I stood watching chaos and the destruction of beloved landmarks, I felt helpless. The riot began at an outdoor concert. When the offenders were tossed from that event, they continued to fight down the road. Like flies to crap, people amassed and emotions spilled over. Why people from our own city would choose to get involved in the destroying of our fair city, I still don't understand. The fight was between people who didn't live here. I can say wholeheartedly that your adrenaline revs up high. Fight or flight. Always senseless, and expensive, riots are a shameful act and those who participate should be prosecuted to the nth degree.

Wonderfully stated, Mykids.  And despite the subject, beautifully written.  I live on the border of KU and MU.  And though I enjoyed seeing Kentucky fried Jayhawk, I am appalled that UK students (some of them) ruined a good thing with such drunken demolition.  I too believe that the gang mentality in relation to sports is very disturbing.  It makes me wonder if these people even wake up in the morning and despite their hangovers feel any remorse for the destruction and bad name that they helped bring

ZOMG!!!!!!!!!!! It's Peachy.
