Hey all.

I know there are quite a few of us ladies on here who are total geeks. I came across this uber video that I thought I would share. If you're a geeky girl, then you will totally relate to this video... it sucks how little respect you get from guy geeks (NOT all of them, I have met some super cool people). I totally related to the gender-neutral pen-name sign... I normally just let guys think I'm a guy (online). And the cleavage sign, in that a lot of people used to say that my good gear was because I was a girl (as in, I used my sexuality to con people). I've never done that. ._.

I was once kicked off a CS server when the mod found out I was a girl and I was holding the number 1 kills/death rank. -.- And the reason? "you're not a girl, girls suck at games." I'll never forget it. But it made me oddly happy, hah.

And it always feels like a competition. If I say I'm a geek and I love comics, anime and video games... it's like I have to prove it. I have to list what I own/read/played/watched etc. It's annoying.

This has only happened online. Any guy geeks I've met in person (usually at gamestop) have been really cool... but I'm always with my husband so... who knows. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. ;)

ETA: How many of you get told that you're a guy pretending to be a girl and they want proof? It happens a lot for me, but I've never given proof cause I don't care. It's just annoying!

ETA2: Also. Will Wheaton. ;D

I'm lucky enough to not get my geek cred challenged a lot. It used to happen back when I first came online (in like, 1997/1998-ish), but not so much anymore. I think a lot of it has to do with the circles I hang out in - I'm not big on MMOs and FPSs make me nauseous, so I don't tend to talk gaming with anybody but my husband most of the time anymore. Online, my geek pursuits center around media consumption (TV, movies) and fanfic mostly, so it's pretty female-centric anyway. I also used to be active in the dolling community in the early 2000s, also very girl-centric.

I did once get the "you're not a real fan" attitude, but it wasn't from a guy. A girl was all excited to talk to me about Lord of the Rings until she found out I'd seen the movies and got all elitist about how movie fans were inferior to book fans (little did she know I was on my third re-read of the books and only wrote book-centric fanfic - I just like the movies too, who cares?)

You're right that the challenges only come from online though - my friends certainly don't seem to care that I'm a girl - I mean if they did, I doubt they would invite me to tabletop game, lol. =P

Also, yay, Wil Wheaton! XD One of my first crushes ever (along with Corey Feldman which I still do not regret, even though it's clear he's kind of a major d-bag).

I am a geek because I actually liked math.. really...I was a physics major, and then an engineer..

I am too old for video games and gaming.. :(

If I'm a geek, I'm not a stereotypical one.

I don't read comic books (but I understand a lot of references).  I'm not a gamer.  I don't program anything. Played D&D briefly in high school, but stopped when I left for college. Have never been to a Comicon or Rennaissance fair, only one Star Trek convention.

BUT....I was the girl who would rather play with legos and hot wheels instead of dolls.  When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer was either "astronaut", "mathematician", or "truck driver."  Was a member of a Mathletes team.  Totally into Star Wars and Star Trek.  Went to engineering school and love statistics.  Shakespeare is awesome.

Just a different kind of geek maybe?

And I can't say I've ever been dissed or called a guy for it. Well, that second one happened once - but only because I could chug a beer faster than most guys I went to engineering school with.  That got me a lot of respect points, for some reason.

Being a geek isn't just about video games/comics/movies/anime! The video even has some girls who are scientists. :) It's not just the stereotype.

I welcome and heart all types of geeks. :)

You're never too old.

And yeah, the MMO community is full of d-bags, but it's just a reminder that there are people who think this way... they can just say it anonymously online.

Mercurystar: What do you mean with dolling? Is it those electronic paper doll-type PC things? I think it was called "KiSS" (Kisekae Set system)? I still have it... I just haven't played it in a very long time (years). Anyway, if it's that... I LOVED it. I had so many screenshots of my dolls. One day when I connect my old HD up to my PC, I'll get to see them all.

I'm a similar sort of geek. Organic chemistry grad student, all-around science nerd, but never played video games. I know the periodic table by song, so I can use that to prove my geekdom. :p

Of course, I can't use age as an excuse... it's just something I never really pursued.

But I respect all geeks. :) Geek girls unite!

Tom Leher, just as an all around rule, is awesome.  If you're into Harry Potter here's a bit of a geek-gasm...

It was actually an offshoot of that, and of a customizable avatar system that started on a chat program called Palace Chat. It grew into an art fad/community that lasted until about 2003/2004, when it quickly died down again. It's essentially a niche form of pixel art.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dollz

Though you'll never find any info on it, the original advertising artwork for Bratz dolls were ripped almost wholeheartedly from a doller's base, without her permission. (It was blatant. It wasn't pretty. There's pretty much no way to prove it and she was just some teenager doing a hobby, there was little she could do.) Oh, those were the days.

No, you are not. :)

On the video game forum I moderate, our average age is mid- to late-30s with many users in their 40s and 50s. At Comic-Con just this month, we saw more than one retirement-aged couple, dressed up together, holding hands and wandering the booths.

G and I decided that will be us for sure.

I thought that'd be me, but at 33 I just stopped playing video games all together, cold-turkey, though not intentionally. I just completely lost interest after I quit WoW for the third and final time. They just held no interest for me any longer.

I replaced that with other in-person activities, board/card games, etc.

Geek brag:

Just recently I bought this cheap dell laptop, with windows 8.. so far I have geeked my way around every obstacle..

There is no driver for my printer in Windows 8.. none,,, zero.. but some clever person figured out that a different driver will work just as well..Got that puppy installed and now sha zam... Cannon I550 where dell don't want it.

No where in Windows 8 ( that you can click), is there a browsing history to look up... Well... got that nailed too.

Last year DH was crippled, and we got one of those electric scooter chair things.. a rascal.. It was an old model.. Dh's son ordered new batteries, I installed them and the thing only went in reverse... Applying major geekness, I took the control apart, found the problem, and then made it worse..  Fixed it with a drill bit and wire and glue.. so it's all good.. For those who don't know,, he is better now.  A long story.

Super Geek..

Heres my take....And I should know...since I'm the king of this Realm

Geeks – love fantasy, sci-fi, anime, and kung fu.  They
proclaim to be smart and use big words, but tests indicate they are of average
intelligence.  The female species of geek, seems to be rapidly growing by
the alarming amount of teens seen wearing panda hats.  Of the 3, geeks are
the most likely to procreate and can often appear attractive to normal people
(under the right lighting).  What geeks lack in intelligence, they make up
for in cunning, as they’ll often disguise themselves as hipsters.  They
take all fashion influence from G4 TV and Woot.com.  They love funny/witty
t-shirts that reference geek pop culture.

Nerds – Love the science, especially quantum physics, they
interject meaningless factoids whenever they get a chance, and generally like
intelligent sci-fi movies where they agonize over hidden meanings conjured in
their heads.  These guys really are smart but pee pee their pants when
having to talk to more than 1 stranger at a time.  They have to pay for
sex.  Their haircuts are usually a throwback to 1970’s BBC programing
(just google some shows for the BBC 1970 for reference).  They love to
quote historical documents and little known quips.  They listen to
classical music when people are around to look impressive (even though they
don’t really like it).  If a shirt has a top button, you better believe
its going to be fastened.  They love, Love, LOVE British humor especially
Monty python, and if you ever are stuck with a group of more than 3 nerds, then
you’ll want to blow your brains out.

Dorks – These guys were
the absolute weirdo’s you saw growing up.   If their body excreted a
fluid, then you can bet they have tasted it at one time or another.  They
enjoy highly impropriate age/gender television programing like my little ponies
or lazy town.   They are typically below average intelligence and
indulge in strange behaviors like staring at you while you are sleeping.
Smaller Legos are too complicated for them, so they have to use the big
blocks.  Most of their clothing is comically outdated, under washed, and
too small.  Their armpits smell like pizza and can either be disgusting or
surprisingly appetizing depending on one’s level of hunger.  They
typically still live with their parents, because their parents feel bad for
dropping them on their head as a baby.  They are not an attractive breed
due to a pallid complexion, greasy hair, and a doughy-fleshy composition.
They are prone to violence against small animals and should be kept away from
fire producing devices.

That is ridiculously accurate!

To answer the OP, I never get accused of secretly being a dude but I don't online game or participate in geek-dominated communities. I just love BBC, programming, and nintendo. I'm not a hardcore gangsta of geekdom. v.v

Rock on bunneh-geek. You keep beating those silly boys!

What a helpful chart!

Thank you!

I think I could be classified as a hybrid Geek|Nerd that multiclassed into Bro, and took "Mild RainbowBrite Fetish" and "Still Watches Cartoons" as my flaws.

Anyone remember the SNL skit about a game show where you needed to determine if the person was a geek, dweeb, or spaz?

I'm not a geek but I get mistaken for a man online pretty regularly.  There was, of course, the classic caloriecat reference to me as "that conservative man" and I seem to draw a lot of "bro" comments if I post on reddit.  Maybe I should start gaming, since I suck at them.

That is AMAZING. I'm saving that one. Perfect. XD

...According to the chart, I'm definitely a nerd.

I don't know - that kind of comes of as "Aging Hipster" to me.  Quick question:  How often do you have to resist the urge to say "the book / original version from the first album is better" and how many plaid shirts do you own?

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
