L-Glutamine.......Sore Muscles

OK yesterday a friend of mine, who lifts weights, suggested I try L-Glutamine for sore muscles.  She said she uses it and it really helps.

So last night on my way home I stopped and pickup some L-Glutamine tablets because they didn't have the tasteless powder.  They cost me $5.98.

I am giving them a try today.  Has anyone else ever tried this suppliment for sore muscles?

I've used L-glutamine to help cut carb cravings (when I was doing atkins in 1996). It worked for me - used it for 8 months, until confronted with mom's pecan pie at thanksgiving dinner.... that was the beginning of the end of atkins for me. And just as well.

I don't know about the sore muscles part of it, but it's an amino acid, so... it's possible.
Wow...are you kidding me?  It will help me not crave carbs?

I bought 500mg and I have no idea how much I should be taking...any ideas?
I can't remember exactly - I know I would take it between meals, like around 10 am, 3 pm and in the evening if I was craving carbs at night.  But I can't remember how many milligrams each tablet was.  Let me see if I can look around and find a recommendation from the atkins site.

there are other amino acids that help with cravings too -- this is the only one I actually used

I've heard that L-phenylalanine (sp?) helps tone down a sweet tooth too

ok, I just looked around on the atkins site and they have completely re-done their site

they've got lots of articles and studies about low carb eating up there, but they've taken down all mention of the amino acid supplements that help you stick with it -- so I'm thinking they want us to buy their books to get that info.  However, I am pretty sure I still have a copy of that book at home (somewhere) so I'll see if I can check on that tonight.

But in the meantime, what do the directions on the bottle say? I would just take it as indicated on the bottle for now.

Also, I did find an interesting depression community site with a page about a book called The Diet Cure by Julia Ross, RD, which is about balancing your brain chemistry, specifically mentions 4 amino acids and L-glutamine is one of them. No dosage details, but maybe you could check that book out from your library?  The web site mentions helping people with eating disorders and alcohol addiction as well. Sorry I haven't read that book, so can't really tell you what else it discusses.  If you check it out, please be sure to share the info you find with us and what kind of evidence it's backed up with.

Thanks.  The bottle says take one daily.  I have been on-line reading up on supplements but still didn't come across a daily recommendation.

OK, Salome - I am so proud of myself for 1) remembering to look for my old copy of atkins' book, 2) finding it! and 3) remembering to bring it to work with me!

and I found the parts where he recommends supplements to help deal with cravings (& other issues)   

:)    I will quote directly:

Dr. Atkin's New Diet Revolution, by Robert C. Atkins, MD, c1992.

p. 101: Nutritional Supplements

  1. "Find a very broad multivitamin...(pitch for his vitamin brand)... Such a formula should contain considerably more than the RDA of B complex factors and of vitamin C, and should contain at least 40 different nutrients. Don't expect to take fewer than 4 pills a day. Ideally chromium picolinate, 200-600 mcg, should be included.
  2. If you have sugar cravings, you must include L-glutamine 500-1000 mg before each meal. 
  3. If you are concerned about an elevated cholesterol level from the very beginning, you should be sure to include two borage oil capsules, 2 tablespoons of lecithin granules per day and pantethine 300 mg before each meal."
p. 273:

  • "For constipation: you may use magnesium oxide, extra vitamin C, or a variety of vegetable laxatives and bulking agents. My favorite choice is psyllium husks. Start with 1 tablespoon in one full glass of water and increase or decrease the dose until the optimal bowel movement is obtained.
  • For sugar craving: L-glutamine, 500-1000 mg before meals and perhaps right at the point in time when craving is greatest. Extra chromium is valuable here too.
  • For hunger not assuaged by being in ketosis: L-phenylalanine, 500 mg, or acetyl L-tyrosine, 300 mg, before meals
  • For fluid retention: pyridoxal 5 phosphate, 50-100 mg, plus L-taurine 1500-3000 mg daily. Asparagus tablets work very well here too.
  • For fatigue: octacosanol, 5-10 mg, PABA, 600-2000 mg, dimethylglycine, 3 to 6 sublingual tablets per day, sublingual B12 tablets, 1-3 daily or 1-3 B complex tablets, 50 mg strength daily.
  • For nervousness: Inositol, 500-2000 mg daily, and herbal teas such as chamomile, valerian, and passion flower.
  • For insomnia: The above taken at night plus melatonin, 3-6 mg before bed (but not if you're a night worker). Calcium, magnesium, niacinamide, pantothenic acid and 5-hydroxy tryptophan may all be useful here as well." 
p. 284: "To stop a binge, your first responsibility is to know you're in trouble and immediately apply an effective technique. The best way I have found to stop a binge is to take certain nutrients: chromium nicotinate 400 mcg, 3 times daily for 2 days; plus L-glutamine 500-1000 mg, 3 times daily; plus B complex, 50 mg strength."

He goes on to advocate eating some high fat, no carb foods after that, like heavy cream or pork rinds to kill the carb cravings.

I can only vouch for the L-glutamine. It worked for me, so I never tried any of the other things mentioned.  Also, I never binged, so I can't attest to the effectiveness of that either.

And I will also say, that even though I did lose 97 pounds on atkins, and I did keep it off for 6 years even not strictly following the diet, I never could lose any more weight, and I eventually gained 87 of them back.  And maybe a diet that creates such constipation like atkins does... maybe that's a real red flag.  But the supplement tips above may be very useful, outside of his diet too.

I have been taking it for 2 days.  It is really helping me.  I think it is worth a try for those suffering from sore muscles.
