Lions, Tigers, and Bears mass breakout...oh crap?
When I woke up this morning and turned on the television I was accosted by images of around 50 wild animals escaping last night just east of Columbus (where I am!). I'm talking cheetahs, tigers, bears, and even giraffes.
WTF. So, the sheriffs office has killed over half the animals last night. Jack Hanna and the Columbus zoo folks searching for the rest with tranquilizer guns. But, there are sightings of these animals all over.
What in the heck was this guy (who is now dead, btw) doing with these animals???
See, I thought this was going to be about zits.
I would stay inside if I were you.
Oh My!
They are telling folks not to catch the cats...yeah. Okay. Thanks.
"Officers with assault rifles searched Wednesday for bears, big cats and other beasts that escaped from a wild-animal preserve in eastern Ohio"
:-( :( :( D:

Anyone else pissed off? These animals are innocent! WHY CAN'T THEY TRANQ THEM? :(
I'm so upset right now.
SERIOUSLY!
EDIT: People have tranq'd animals in the dark before!
I'm so annoyed/angry. So much innocence being destroyed.

UM YES. See my above post. I'm disgusted.
I'm listening to a press conference right now with Jack Hanna and the sheriffs office. The officers don't have access to traq guns. They had 1 hour of daylight last night to get as many animals a they could. They are dealing with mountain lions, Bengal tigers, cheetahs, and two types of bears. They had to kill them. The zoo folks and wildlife vets are now with the officers.
Even jack Hanna is saying right now that they did the right thing. I mean, what the heck are they supposed to do? This is scary ****.

Yeah, it's pretty upsetting. Jeff Corwin was interviewed on the Today Show and Matt Lauer brought up the same point. Corwin said it's horribly sad but tranquilizing animals that size and in that state of high excitement is extremely difficult. It also takes a while for the effects to kick in. Obviously, they're putting the safety of the public over that of the animals.
Still sad.

Sorry, I was raging. I'm so asdjaksjdasdja. No words really to describe how I feel. The bastard that should be shot on sight is dead so there's no one to blame. :(
Those animals are scared sihtless right now. They're used to where they were confined, now they're out with things like cars, and people and things they probably never saw.
Exotic animals should be completely illegal to own. NO ONE should even OWN a **** lion.

I know, I'm just kind of mad at the world right now, if that makes sense?
I mean tigers are considered endangered... they're being shot. :((((
As an example to what bier was saying, they just described a vet and an officer team up together to catch an aggressive mountain lion. The vet was able to get amazingly close and traq it; however, right afterwards it went nuts and they had to put it down.
This is just insane.

I agree. I think everyone is really angry.
Jack Hanna called the Governor about this. Because these animals were not made available for viewing, Federal restriction was not applicable. I really hope legislation will be pushed through preventing this. It's sick.
This is what happens when you have stifling regulations and high taxes.
:/

To be fair, it was a "wild animal preserve".
And don't be sorry, I wasn't being aggressive towards you - just this **** situation.
It's very upsetting. Interesting thing, apparently Ohio has very few regulations on keeping exotic animals like tigers, etc. They regulate whether you can own a wild animal that is native to the area (you need a permit) though.
The latest theory I've heard is that the guy actually opened the pens himself prior to committing suicide.
I feel terrible for the animals, but I'm guessing the reason they have to resort to killing them is that they just don't have the specialized staff to capture them all safely as quickly as that needed to happen. They can't have these animals running around a populated area. Especially as scared as they must be.
But you're absolutely right, this stuff should never happen in the first place. It's tragic that these animals are dying because people have been morons. So sad.
How crazy is this.
Doesn't Ohio have some of the most lax exotic animal laws?
This owner has had multiple violations and was given 20 days to have all these animals removed from the premises. Maybe having the animals removed for him upon the judgement would have been a wiser course of action.
Am I the only one who also feels for the misguided man who owned and released the animals? He committed suicide, so perhaps thought releasing them would be better for the animals than letting them starve to death in their pens. Obviously not knowing that they would be killed. I don't know. I just feel for anyone who reaches such a low point in their life that they believe that suicide is their only option or alternative.
*sigh*
A sad situation any way you look at it.
He's an asshat who decided to put others at risk and knowingly put these animals in the crosshairs.
No I do not feel sorry for him, not even a little bit.
Does anybody know if this has anything to do with "The Wilds?" It's a park open to the public over in Zanesville, OH that has free-roaming wild animals, mostly animals like giraffes and zebras, etc. I only remember them having one area with Cheetahs. Such a neat place. I hope it's not from there.

Honestly, I feel bad that he felt like that was his only way out, but if he really cared what was going to happen to the animals, he'd have had the authorities take them away, he'd have called another rescue to rehome them, he'd have done SOMETHING other than feeding them on Monday and opening the cages. At least they'd have been taken care of properly.
