Does the moon affect your sleep pattern?

I must be part werewolf. Can't sleep well on moonlit night. Can't sleep well at all.

Morning, Cajun.

I sleep more lightly when there is a full moon and deeper when the moon waxes to a new moon.

We must be lunar-synched beings.

Apparently, a lot of people can't, but most studies I've read can't conclude that there's a direct correlation with the moon phase.

But no, I've never noticed that it affects my sleep pattern - not that I've kept a log or anything - just a generalization.

My oldest son claims to be bothered and restless because of the full moon, but he's restless at night at all phases of the moon, so I'm thinking in his case he's just convinced himself of the cause/effect because of what he's seen on TV.

Well, most mammalian creatures' sleeping patterns are linked in with lunar cycles, why exclude humans? Personally, I find that I'm too focused on other things for that to affect my sleeping pattern, but being a student means I sleep all the time ;) Also, after a hard day you want to sleep anyway. But there are more important underlying factors such as whether you sleep deeply or not, how your diet is, how you exercise or lack of, consumption of stimulant drugs such as caffeine can cause restlessness a bit later on in the day.

Very rarely, I do get those occasions where I just can't drop off, or I'm lying there for hours before I start to nod off. Your emotional state greatly influences not only your sleep but all other bodily processes too. In summary, I would say yes, there is some sort of lunar influence but maybe it's not direct and if you are having some trouble dropping off round that time you could always get up a little earlier on those days, exercise well, stay away from stimulants and you'll probably be alright. Maybe part of your problem is psychological (full moon = can't sleep = won't sleep). A nice warm bath and a soothing warm drink help me feel quite drowsy. Also, this may be a little TMI but orgasms flood your body full of hormones that fall asleep ;) So when guys fall asleep after the act, the poor buggers can't help it really!

I was never very good at physics, but I thought the main difference between the new moon and the full moon was just the alignment of the moon in relation to the earth and the sun.

The earth either blocks out all the light from the sun, or it blocks none of the light from the sun.

Is the moon closer to or farther away from the Earth at certain points in the phases of the moon?

nope. unless it's "my moon" in the way indigenous canadians use it. i have one sleepless night per cycle.

No, but at new and full moon the sun and moon are aligned so that the tidal forces are either slightly stronger or weaker than normal.

So if I were an ocean, it would definitely affect how well I sleep...

:D

Yes....I've really noticed lately that I sleep like crap when the moon is full/bright.

I hate full moons. I always wake up naked in the woods and I never know why...

 Thank you Bunny.

Yes, but only because my curtain to my room is a sheer green fabric, so it shines right in like day time.

Maybe I need a sleep mask.

One time when I was visiting home with my sisters, I got really really drunk.  I ended up puking all over myself so to clean me off my sisters stripped me down and hosed me in the back yard.  They still refer to that as the night of two moons.  Perhaps something similar is happening to you :p

There, I fixed it for you.

Really common. Every time I've been in a psych unit and it's been a full moon there is always ample "agitated action". Ask any RN who works in psych too, they'll confirm it.

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
