-You have beans & toast for breakfast.

-Bangers are not people who listen to heavy metal music.

You must be British if you are constantly aware of the polite thing to do or say in any situation, whether you choose to do or say it, or not.

(am half-English and I do <3 the English)

You think broth is gravy and gravy is sauce.

You think fries are chips and chips are crisps.

Ok... I have a question: How big are bangers supposed to be. The first time I had Bangers and Mash (in 1979 - in England) the bangers were very small and very savory.

I just had some over the weekend at a local bar trying to be a British pub and they were big and bland.

Having recently moved to Sweden I can add these to the list:

  • You genuinely have no idea that mushrooms don't all taste like portabello or champinjoner (common mushroom?)
  • You get annoyed when foreign speakers of english say "candy" "sweater" and "couch"
  • You go to the dentist and he guesses you are british because your teeth show you drink a lot of tea!
  • You are horrified by racism (yes I have finally realised that Britain (or at least Northen England) is pretty damn well integrated in comparison to other places!
  • you DON'T eat a fry-up for breakfast (why do all foreigners think we do this!!)
  • You call a muffin a muffin, not an English muffin.
  • You actually know what a crumpet is.
  • You know that Yorkshire puddings are not ONLY eaten in Yorkshire (My lovely Brazilian friend thought this to be true!)
  • You know that there are hundreds of different accents accross the UK and, we do not (as my friend's dad was once told by an American) all sound "like Mary Poppins"

I think the waitstaff was probably just coming on to you, kathy, with suggestive foodstuffs.

British =/= English. It is not PC to call yourself English. If you were truley British you would not have called yourself half English. We are of course a PC nation! :p

Huh. I had a guy from thereabouts tell me that he is not British, he is English.

My mom moved here in 1964, so I guess I'm not PC.

I consider myself half-English, since I have no relatives in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland.

But the name of your country is the United Kingdom, not Great Britain which is the geographical name of the island.

Then he was most likely a teensy bit Racist. We're actually advised against putting our Nationality as English on anything because it can be seen as rejecting our fellow Brits. However, its perfectly fine for a Welsh person to put Welsh etc.

Edit to note: I'm not saying this is right, its just a reflection of PC gone mad :)

Hey it was only meant to be a bit of fun! Tongue out

I <3 the English, the Scots, the Welsh and any other Brits.

I'm neutral on the Irish.  ;)  Just kidding!  I think there is some prejudice against the Irish among some 'Brits' but I have found them to be lovely people, the ones I've known.

You must be British if you know that Spotted Dick is not a medical condition.

That's odd because no one in my part of the UK (South-East coast of England)would ever call themself "British".

As a "non'Brit" I'd like my "banger" to be about 8 inches & experienced. Foot in mouth

if... your teeth are .....

..and not at all bland...

That is utter rot. Racist indeed! Please say you are joking.

I am English and proud of it, and always have been. And I have never seen any advice suggesting that pretending I am not English is the way to go - not that I would have taken it anyway.
