If a person was stuck on an island and could only eat...

Quote  |  Reply

I was playing Into the Blue for Wii awhile back (survival in an abandoned island game) and wondered about this....

In the game the character eats stuff from the ground, ie lots of mushrooms and vegetables.

He also picks up clams and fishes too much but nevermind that for now.

I started wondering, how long could a person survive eating only fruits and vegetables? Obviously they would be missing proteins, some fats (unless the island had nuts, avocados and olives I suppose LOL) lots of nutrients! How long could a human being survive eating only these type of things? I was curious how long my character would survive in real life, haha.

I'm talking about only eating apples, ferns, lettuce, celery, cucumbers, mushrooms, carrots, etc... those normal boring fruits and vegetables that we eat everyday.

I was just curious how long a human being could survive under these conditions, if they didn't eat any oysters/clams/fish/meat products etc on this island.... i guess they would live longer with nuts, avocados and olives but lets exclude those for now. Just curious! :)

Also, I also wonder how long a person could survive eating just peanut butter haha (I know the emergency food they send to countries with starving children is a thick peanut butter like paste that is really high in calories, healthy fats, nutrients to nourish the kids).

Random thoughts enter my head....

If they could catch fish or eat shelled fish they could probably do alright. Or maybe even somehow hunt and catch a bird or 2?

Oh if they didn't... hmmm the lack of vitamin b12 would do them in I think.

NM the food.  Where's the water?  Without fresh water a human will die in about 36 hours.  The kidneys shut-down.

Also, if I were stranded on an island I'd learn to fish.  I'd make a net outta palm fronds or something and catch fish, also, dry it for days the fish aren't around or I can't do it.  With my survival skills, I'd probably last longer than I will in this city.  I am just not equipped for so many humans.

Ok I guess there's water...

I know a person could survive probably longer with fishing/hunting, I'm just wondering if this person couldn't fish at all and this island only had stuff like lettuce and apples growing, how long would it take before they die?

And my friend was curious about this - would you last longer eating only vegetables or only meat? I obviously thought it would be meat, but let me know if you think any differently

It is obviously meat.  Vegetables wouldn't provide essential amino acids (protein) or essential fatty acids and you wouldn't last too long without either of those.  The exact length of time a person would survive on vegetables alone would be individual.  A person can survive indefinitely on fatty meat and can last quite a while on lean meat before "rabbit starvation" sets in.

A person could live awhile on peanut butter.  Most importantly it provides protein and fat.  But it also provides the nutrients we need the most of; salt, calcium, magnesium, and potassium.

So... what you're asking is "can someone survive as a vegetarian".

I know a few who seem to be handling it. I'd probably go mental and gnaw off my own foot, but others seem to tolerate it.

hata,

  Yeah,

I'm a new veggie (only 5wks in) but so far I'm not missing meat. I feel great,

but of course I have protein substitutes like nuts, quinoa, and all kinds of

beans. One would definitely need a source of protein to survive. I don't know

how long someone could survive without protein. I'm sure they would be

hungry all the time without any fats to sustain them between all the fruits

and veggies.

Plenty of vege fare with protein. Nuts being a big one, but also legumes. Soybeans, for instance, are about 40% protein. All beans, peas and lentils are pretty high in protein. Decent amount in cereal grains as well, and even potatos.

You don't even really need a ridiculously high amount of protein either... there's a lot of people who survive happily on diets of 50-30-20 (50% carb, 30% protein, 20% fat). Recommended daily intake for an adult male is around 50g a day. Wouldn't take much.

So yeah, it's doable... but give me a big ol' T-Bone over a soybean sandwich anyday.

hata,

  Yuk,

Soybean sandwich? Sounds like cardboard tasting to me! I eat a lot of lentils,

some baked sweet potato fries, and flax seeds with oatmeal frequently.

As for tofu, well, I'm still afraid to try it! Not that you'd find tofu on a deserted

island. Tongue out

You'd have to give up and eat bugs and slugs I'd imagine.

*consults her Army Survival Manual*

NO not as a vegetarian - I researched quite about it before when I was trying it out a bit so I know it's obviously possible to survive as a vegetarian, haha. However, vegetarians usually consume alot of legumes (soybeans, beans in general)/dairy/etc for protein intake.

I'm saying without things like beans/nuts/olives/avocadoes on the island (and eating only fruits/veggies like lettuce, apples, berries, cucumbers, mushrooms, things we consider rather low calorie) how long would a person last? I guess throw potatoes in there too (not that low calorie but I guess that would be easy to find). Fruits and vegetables without that much protein or fats in it, low calorie fares... Sorry if I'm confusing you guys. :) I do remember a model dying after only eating lettuce and diet coke for like 3 months.... hm

AND ooh bugs, I forgot about those.

But yeah only those veggies - forget the island, i'm just asking how long one would survive on those low calories fares because I was curious about how long my character would survive on his island eating only mushrooms, haha.

You would not survive long eating only mushrooms. And if you are going to eat the shrooms, make sure you're knowledgeable enough to not eat the poisonous ones.

OP, just surviving on regular fruits and vegetables, I don't think you would last long on a number of reasons. The first being a deficiency of calories in general (I am assuming this based on, as you said, if there were no nuts, avocados, or olives). Unless there were gojiberries on the island. Those things have a lot of protein and iron for a fruit.

Second, the amount of vegetables you would have to eat to get enough calories would be a sh** load of fiber. Too much fiber (at first, before you get used to the amount) leads to either diarrhea or constipation, which both contribute to dehydration.

mspew, you could get water from the vegetation. Ever wonder why you don't see rabbits drink much? They usually get enough water from their diets of vegetables, grains, and lots of leafy greens. But as I said, the fiber could cause poop problems, and lead to dehydration all over again.

hata and phoebe, vegetarians may eat a lot of fruits and vegetables. But, their main sources of protein come from pulses (lentils and beans, which need to be cooked), grains (which need to be processed, unless you want to add a ton more fiber to your already very fibrous diet, and soy products (not likely to get them on the island).

my one rabbit drinks at least a cup of water a day. he's all of 2 pounds. granted he pisses like a horse.

but i generally agreed and thought of this post. i just ate 1 cup strawberries and 3 mandarins and i have to go to the loo now! lol

to the op- how big is this freakin island that has all this stuff on it? and if it's big enough to have all this vegetation, there's probably some birds or bugs or some form of animal, sea life or other to munch on. For that matter... maybe you should worry about poisonous foods and dangerous critters.. or exposure! and what of the season? if they were trapped at winter time they're almost as good as screwed! lol

I stand corrected.

I had a friend who used to raise wild bunnies. Her dog had a habit of eating mother bunnies that decided to nest in her yard. I never saw any of them drink.

Then again, all of those baby bunnies were scared all the time with super dilated eyes. They looked creepy as hell. The bunnies never lasted long, so maybe that's why I never saw them drink.

 awe that's sad!

not completely corrected. my other rabbit drinks 1/2 a cup a day and is 4 pounds. but like i said.. the little guy pisses like a horse. lol. sometimes i swear his whole butt lifts off the ground for the force of it lol. i think if he didn't drink as much as he does, he'd dehydrate super quick.
