What are you reading?

Quote  |  Reply

It's summer!  Time for fluffy summer books and sitting in the sun.  So, what are you reading?  Actually, what have you just finished, what are you reading right now, and what's next?

I just finished my first Christopher Moore - A Dirty Job, I'm currently reading Elmore Leonard - Get Shorty, and I'm planning on Paul Quarrington - King Leary.

I read Pillar of the Earth this summer, by Ken Follett Laughing

I am reading now, A Different Mirror by Ronald Takaki   Smile

Heh, I'm back to more Christopher Moore (Sacre Bleu & Fool), and I never did read the Paul Quarrington one. Maybe I'll give it another shot.

almost finished east of eden by steinbeck, thanks to a wicked storm while camping on tuesday night. big fricken book. and genius, of course. steinbeck reminds me how important it is to use humour to make the truth palatable.

damn, that man could write.

but travels with charlie sucks rocks. it should be included in the curriculum for a course entitled, "How To Be Preachy and Condescending."

Are you in the Koots pg? I was in your hometown last week.

I'm reading The wine of angels, the first in the series about Merrily Watkins, a woman vicar in a village in England. I picked it up, after reading nr 4 in the series and loving it.

This series really does atmosphere right. The characters are so well described you think they are real people you've shared history with. And while it hints at supernatural, it does it so subtly, so intelligently, it's, dare I say, almost realistic.

To top it off, I'm neither a Christian, nor a believer in God, and yet this series has made East Anglican church politics not only interesting, but cool.

So if you like your murder mysteries mixed with actual mystery, well shaped characters, evocative writing, history, religion, and believable likeable Christians and (occasional) pagans, get on it.

Recommended!

Anyone read Dark Places? I don't remember who it's by...

Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. Mice and Men and Grapes of Wrath a just wonderful books too. Read them twice.

Just read Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood - excellent book.

Am reading What is the What by David Eggars - loving it. His Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius is one of my all time favorites.

The Righteous Mind by Jonathan Haidt.

Next on the nightstand is Free to Choose by Milton Friedman.

Actually, I was there on the 3rd (holy crap, it's the friggin' 17th today). You must have driven right past my house when you went camping (well relatively close anyway).

I'm actually reading "The Help" again. Partially because I haven't bought any new books recently, but also because I love it! This will be my third time reading it.

I have found myself trying lots of different styles of books now that I can again get them so easily for free (kindle, sadly not near a library now).

Just finished "Where's my **** Latte" short stories about assistants to the rich and famous of Hollywood. Very amusing.

I'm enjoying a fictional detective series "Amber Fox Mysteries" by Sibel Hodge

Also trying to educate myself more about American history, so in addition to reading biographies of previous presidents (most recently Abe Lincoln) next on my list is "Running a Thousand Miles for Freedom: The Escape of William and Ellen Craft from Slavery".

I'm re-reading the entire Gunslinger series by Stephen King. I'm almost done book 2. When I picked up his latest, The Wind Trough the Keyhole, I wanted to start over with Roland and the gang.

starting Tell All by Palahniuk

Starting tonight: Physiology Coloring Book
