russia's anti-gay laws and the socchi olympics

Quote  |  Reply

i just heard a radio interview with a russian gay activist. they're planning pride activities for the day of the opening ceremonies and throughout the games. the russian government has offered guarantees that athletes and other foreigners won't be subject to the anti-homosexuality legislation, at least not during the games. with all those cameras watching, it should be a very interesting few weeks!

(eta: and this is when a bunch of people from the southern states ask, socchi olympics? whaaa? yes, the winter olympic games will be held in socchi, russia, in february of 2013 2014. yes, there is such a thing as winter olympic games.)

I doubt if those of us in the US will see or hear anything about protests at the Olympics.  That is unless there is a chance of someone from the US winning the protest since we only see Olympics events where USA athletes medal.

Well, not out of sports coverage media, no.  Mainstream media "news", maybe, if they manage to run out of royal baby stories by then.

However, unless Putin is going to ban cell phones and dashboard cams, I think there will be plenty of protest info coming out of Russia.

I protest the mis-romanization of Sochi as Socchi.

Cause of course everyone from the south is dumb, ignorant of all events outside the US and can't remember 2002- when the winter games were in the US. Wondering if there'll every be a day when twfh can get through a thread w/o belittling someone. Maybe it'll be the same day that Kim Jun Un is actually voted Sexiest Man Alive.

Seriously? No love for 'Snark Karma'??

Sorry - that was awesome, KG! I think "Activate" should be the name of the debut album.

To be fair, I'm a transplant. :P

Agree with the general preference for Winter Olympics over Summer - and on a serious note: I wonder if comparing draconian anti gay laws in some of our states, to the former Soviet Union would inspire some GOP members to stop the nonsense.

This.

There are some rumblings that the US should boycott the 2014 winter games....

I honestly don't believe that is fair to the athletes who have been training most of their lives to compete.

Besides, I really want to see how Lolo Jones does in the bobsled!

Doesn't this... I don't know... prove that even Putin knows that these laws are completely and utterly despicable? That, if he really believed in these laws, he'd be taking the attitude of "My country, my rules."? Have other past host countries had to promise to not enforce any of their laws on Olympic athletes?

Of course, otherwise they'd have to come up with an alternative to male figure skating.

To be fair, she stated "a bunch of" not "everyone."  While they are probably more aware than that, I'm not going to assume that everyone in the south is fully educated of things going on outside their monkeysphere, either. (ETA:  of course, you could say that about most of the US)

However, I'm guessing with Senator Graham weighing in, maybe a lot more people from his district know about it now.

I was going to go there but I noticed the subtle "non-atackedness" of it. Just as Honolulu has no NHL team thus the Southern States have far less interest in the winter Olympics.
