A friend of mine recently made an FB status update asking people to stop posting pictures of abused animals and sick kids, that instead they should go to an actual website and make a donation to whatever charity instead of sharing the pic/story.

A friend of hers added a comment saying that the people who post those pictures are sick.

I personally feel that the person who posts the pic/story isn't *necessarily* sick, that they may feel outraged over a story of animal abuse (for example). What I think is sick is the people who are responsible (in the case of abuse).

I agree with the awareness sharing a story brings...but awareness is made more effective when a person actually DOES something, like donate time or money to the cause they're bringing attention to. It's awfully easy to share an item and then tell yourself that you're fighting for the cause.

I'm curious as to what people's opinions are...

I think a LOT of the stuff people share is just out there for shock value. i don't need to see a picture of a horribly abused dog while drinking my morning coffee to be aware that abuse happens. it's just like all those games that went around where the women posted colors and weren't supposed to tell all the guys it was their bra color and that was supposed to help stop breast cancer.

That's what that was about?? Was it something similar for the game where you say something like "I like to do it on the kitchen table"?

In the case of abused animals, I know some of us are part of mailing groups set up by the Humane Society, or smaller non-profits, and so people will post things from there. Especially if there is a petition to be signed or emergency funds needed for something.

I hate seeing the photos, of course, but since I do support those causes, I have to admit it reminds me to send a donation, and that I'm glad to have found out about something I can help with. Example: I support "The Gentle Barn" which is here in my state, and sometimes they have a new arrival, like a goat or calf who was abused/orphaned, and need some help with it.

They have lots of fans on FB, so if a good number of us send even ten dollars, it's a great thing for them and an effective way of reaching out.

It's definitely not all done out of shock value.

OMG! That is exactly why I deactivated my account last week! A friend posted a horrifying picture, with no resources or links on how to help because she was upset by it, and "needed" to share it. I thought about posting on her picture and saying "WHY THE FAWK DID YOU POST THIS? There isn't even any mention of how to stop it!".

People who do this, without posting a means to help are a$$holes.

But I decided, it's easier to get the fawk off facebook for a while instead of having my days start off pissed off. It's been a week, and I logged back on once for about 1 minute and thought, "Yup, I'm not missing a thing".

the 'kitchen table' thing was about where you put your purse when you come home from work. ie. 'on the dining room floor,' 'on a chair in the kitchen,' etc.

i got sick of Fb for a variety of reasons, and the subject of the OP is definitely one of them. now i just use FB to play scrabble lol

...and of course now that i'm hooked on pinterest i have no time for Fb anyway :)

I don't know.  People are weird.  People share weird things.  It best if there is an explanation before the picture that is posted so folks know you don't abuse animals and post them on FB, but that doesn't always happen.

I have a sort of friend (male) who I am FB friends with.  His wife is newly pregnant and he is on this naked picture kick where he is taking pictures of his newly pregnant wife and posting them on FB for everyone to see and critique.  They are kind of strange too.  Like one of them is an above view of his wife in the bath tup without water covering (barely) her private areas.

Just weird.  You just have to go with it.

Some of my family members do this, posting crap like pictures or stories of bad events. Or the crappy "only 3% will share this" ones. If you wanna share something, let it be funny or interesting. I don't care for your popularity contests or drama.

@ nebichan, yeah, I love the ones that say "I love connecting with my friends, I'll be watching to see who likes this and reposts it, I'll know you're a true friend". Or how about this one: "Jesus said 'deny me in front of people and I'll deny you in front of my father'. He just saw you read this, repost or you're going to hell" or some such wording.

I make a point of never sharing or liking those statuses.

@ crazi- very strange...I hope this guy doesn't have any minors on his FB!

I'm so glad I don't have friends like that.

repost or you're going to hell??  Are you serious?  People do that?

Yep. I saw one the other day stating that the angels of Heaven wanted me to repost something.

Somehow, I don't think I will damn my soul if I ignore it.

If there are angels in Heaven, I'd certainly hope they had better things to do.

It's not quite worded like that, but that's the gist of it.

A lot of my teen son's friends have added me to FB (I always accept the request)...it's only them that post the ones saying that God saw you read this status, now repost or else.

A friend of mine posted something like:

"what if you woke up tomorrow and God took away everything you never thanked him for?"

And I wrote, "God would be a meanie".

I eventually deleted it because I got a lot of religious panties in a bunch and said "that is a very nice way of looking at life".

Y'all hang with a bunch of holy rollers.

one of my friends found god about 10 years ago. I mean, she knew where he was before, but now she REALLY knows him.

There's at least a couple flotillas of them protecting me from harm.

:)

None of them are even on facebook, so....

I'm not sure if I should feel worse for her or for the folks she must feel compelled to save.

I think the worse stuff is the people that post REALLY personal stuff and/or start a family feud over stuff on FB.

or the "I effing hate *insert name here*!!" and 2 days later *insert same name here* is so awesome!!

Passive aggressive posts are my favorite.  The ones that are probably meant for someone. They could be for you, but they are so vague that you really have no idea.

Those are great.

And if you're a paranoid person, they are ALL about you.  I know someone like that. She is 00% certain that any friend that posts something of that nature means it about her.

ETA:  Does that make her paranoid or narcissistic?  Maybe a paranoid narcissist?

Allergy Remedies
Is It Possible to Go Natural?
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
