I feel awkward watching people open gifts.  Because I never feel sure that they will like them and I am braced for a bad reaction/facial expression (before they get themselves together and pretend to be delighted).

And I hate opening gifts, too, because I am not good at faking excitement and I'm not normally a very excitable person.  So I could open a giant brick of gold, which would be awesome, and not respond in a way that would convey my gratitude.  It feels forced to me.

This^

A well selected gift is the geodesic path between hearts, particularly when the relationship surface is nonlinear.

I don't even know what that means

I eliminated 98% of alcohol from my diet almost a year ago (I grew way too fond of it). I found when I did that I actually gained weight. That's what got me back in the gym.

A friend of mine had that happen when he quit drinking... He ended up replacing the alcohol with food.  Once he realized what he was doing, he dropped 30 lbs pretty quick, though.  He looks better now than he has in a long time.  (Or did the last time I saw him... he lives about 1000 miles away, so that doesn't happen often anymore)

I actually think the body "craves" sugar to replace what you were taking in through alcohol. I really need sweets.

That's the thing, once you break the sugar/alcohol cycle you don't feel like you need or want either.

I'm sort of the same, but usually the only people getting me gifts are people who know me well so when I just smile and say, "Thanks!" they know I really mean it.

You know what's even more awkward?

My dad always gives me money.  Our relationship is awkward and unfamiliar and formal anyway.  I hate it.  He always hands me the envelope and I set it to the side and then he makes me count it while he watches. I feel like that looks so...greedy.  I'm so broke, $10 would be a blessing, so it doesn't actually matter.  And I don't want to seem like Mr. Krabs, counting my pennies or something.

Physiologically, this makes sense.

It happens to recovering drug addicts, too.  (Not to compare you to a junkie!)

Oh and cocktails at the tavern tonight. This will be my first foray out into the wide world after my little epiphany. No tears, just laughs.

Go me. :)

What did I miss?

Sorry I've been playing with being pretentious too much today.

A well selected gift is the shortest path to the heart, particulary when the relationship is complicated.

Apparently tom's relationships are.

No worries!

I'm totally a sugar junkie.  I admit it.  I embrace it.

i should admit, i'm pretty close with my family.  if i had to pick out gifts for a bunch of less familiar people, i'd probably enjoy it less.

It can be tough when you have a new family.  I've got a good handle on things his sister would like, but choosing gifts for Nick's brother is still hard for me.

This afternoon at about 4:30pm, I'll get a chance to shoot a .50 cal Barrett sniper gun at a gun club near by my house. I have a hunch that I may not like it as much as I thought.

D's family is weird about gifts.  It kinda bugs me.
