Skinniest models are banned from catwalk

I think this is a step in the right direction:

Madrid city council, which sponsors the fashion week, has ordered that every model on show must have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 18. Models who are 5ft 9in (1.75m) tall must weigh a minimum of 8st 11oz (56 kg).

Esther Caņadas, Spain?s best-known model, does not qualify under the new rules as she is said to have a BMI of only 14. Almost a third of the women lined up appear to have been barred. The council promised that a nutritional expert would be on hand to check every model taking part in the shows, and that any woman found to have a BMI of below 16 would receive medical treatment.

It is about time! Now if they can do that all over the world!
Yipee!!  Hopefully this will mean fewer women who look like young scrawny boys will end up in the media.  Bring back some women with curves!
Give all those curves to me-got to love the healthy types the bestest
Gotta love Madrid for keeping it progressive! ^__^

..Ridding the world of unrealistic expectations, one coke fiend at a time.

I'd actually aim for a BMI in the twenties or so, but a step in the right direction nonetheless.
I think the fact that they're sending the ones who don't pass for treatment is a fabulous thing!  If only we could send all the people who're fixated on trying to attain the heroin chique for treatment too!
Yikes!  I just figured out that to equal Esther's BMI (I'm 5'7.5") I would have to weigh 90 pounds or less.  That's disgusting and so unhealthy!!!

Muy bien, oficiales de la ciudad de Madrid! That gives new meaning to "Viva, Espaņa!"  :D
it's a good start, hopefully a first step with more to come
The weird thing is that I looked up pictures of that Esther girl and she doesn't look like her BMI is 14. She looks thin but not unhealthy.
Wow!
That is wonderful!  It's about time we recognize women for normal bodies instead of unhealthy ones!
Ha! Most Righteous! :D Awesome! :D
Finally!  A step in the right direction.  I hope other countries follow suit.  I'd love to see a policy like this in Hollywood.
Wow that's quite something.
Thats great news! thanks for sharing
this looks pretty gross to me. Blech... i don't why some people think it's attractive to be able to see the outline of your bone everywhere on your body... and for your biceps to be the same size as your wrist. Disgusting.
Yes, that picture is pretty awful, and the suit.... one need not bother with a wax to wear it, given the placement of the fringe! :-D
Good for them.  When I was in Spain in 1998 I recall they had a pretty big problem with eating disorders.  I was a size 6-8 at the time and really couldn't find anything to buy in the stores, either, because my hips were too big for any of the clothes they way they were made.
XD That's awesome! Good for them!
agree with you Jayd
That's totally awesome!!!  Seriously should be a worldwide thing!!  That'd give our twisted culture a shock, eh?  No more unrealistic body images reinforced from Barbie age on, eh?

GO MADRID!!!
