someone stole my ipod! can anybody help me? :(

Quote  |  Reply

so, long story short... my brother's friend went into my room and stole my ipod touch. i don't have actual evidence that he took it... but he is the only person who could possibly have taken it. i know he did it.

what can i do?

i have the box it came in, along with the receipt. i plan on taking the serial number to the police tomorrow.

is there anything else i can do? i have only had the ipod for 4 months... i REALLY have to get it back. i'm so upset about this.

has anyone else gotten their ipod stolen, and did you get it back?

sorry this post is so spazzy, i am really freaking out here. :(

have you got home and contents insurance?  if so  you should try and get it replaced through your insurer. other than that maybe just go see the police .. but im not sure what you can do really apart from just reporting it..  you can't just accuse someone unless you have evidence .  why do you think he took it? do you think maybe you have misplaced it or it  has fallen down the back of your bed or chest of drawers etc?  make sure (if you havent already) look everywhere and or ask someone else to help.  a fresh set of eyes works wonders.  hopefully you will get it back. otherwise ask your brother if he notices his mate using your ipod.

my whole family tore apart the house and all of our cars looking for it. my mom said that it was in my room saturday morning (before the friend came over) and i didn't touch it at all.

i was thinking that since schools are allowed to search you, maybe if i called the school he goes to and reported the ipod they could search him and his bag?

i just don't want to do something like that in case it doesn't work and he gets scared and gets rid of it somehow.

Are you absolutely sure he took it? Can't you call his parents to see if they'd be willing to help?

Will he want it to use it or sell it? I'd definitely go to all the pawn shops in your area, give them the serial numbers (show them everything that proves it is your iPod) and tell them it is stolen.

well you have made a decent effort to look for it. i dont think if he did really take it he would be game enough to be using it.. he would most likely pawn it so yeah the pawn shop would be a good idea like kov said.  as for the school thing i think thats a little drastic.. unless it happened at school i dont think they would have the right to search , then that goes into breaches of basic human rights.  speaking to the parents is also a good idea like kov said maybe try them.  but still report it to the police. it helps to have it in writing that you actually reported it stolen.  otherwise im afraid you might just have to forget about your ipod , as unfair as it sounds.

You can do a couple of things.  Like Weldo said, your best bet is your parents home insurance.  Also, file a police report with the serial number.  Contact his parents or even ask him about it.  As for the school, they don't have the right to search him and his bag.  They have the right to search school property like his locker but I doubt they would do that for something that you really have no hard evidence of.

It might not be the same where you live, but when I was in high school, a lot of people stole ipods and then either immediately sold them to other people- not a pawn shop, but other students, etc. One of my friends used to brag about what a great price she'd gotten on her ipod from some random guy at our school. She got a great price because he freaking stole it out of some girl's bag :S

Are you positive that your brother wouldn't steal it? Not to be mean, but it's a thought. One of my brothers has stolen from me and my parents before. If you're positive it was your brothers friend, I think your best bet is to go to his parents and show them the information. I would also add that you and/or your parents saw him going in or coming out of your room. More reason for the parents to believe you.

Good luck, I really hope you get it back

One of our teachers had theirs stolen and found it on craigslist. When he found it listed he notofied the police (the school SRO) and they recovered it.

What is brother's stance on this?

My brothers would have gone ballistic if they thought one of their friends stole from anyone in the family.

thanks to everyone who has replied so far.

- my mom went to the police today and reported it missing. i don't know if they'll be much help, but at least they know about it.

- i'm about to call apple and give them my serial number. i heard that they can find out which computer it was last plugged into or something. i'm sure the little jerk will put music and stuff on it, so that might help...

- i know for sure my brother didn't take it. he doesn't believe his friend stole it either, even though it's obvious that he did. ugh!

- my brother is only 12 and i'm  pretty sure his friend is 13ish. we can't just go to his parents about this because they are really crazy... they would deny it and help him get rid of it.

that's another thing i'm really worried about... he is the kind of person that would sell it at school for 10 bucks. i'm also worried about it getting totally destroyed... like, if i get it back and it's covered in scratches and everything, would it be possible to make him replace it? i kept that thing in perfect condition.

ughhh, this whole deal is so stupid...

I hate to say it, but you're probably screwed.

It all depends.  If the police arrest him and he's convicted, the judge could order him to pay restitution so you would get your money back.  If he does give it back damaged then you'd obviously have some proof that he took it so you could sue him in small claims court for damages.

I hate to say it, but I agree with Jaded.  There's a couple of problems here.  The dollar amount of one ipod is so little that it would be a waste for the police to spend much time investigating it.  If they have the serial number, they will return it to you if they find it (as in they found a bunch of stolen property and yours was with it).  They might investigate it if you have more evidence or if it's part of a larger string of crimes.

would it maybe be covered under our house insurance?

hi geek. like i said before put in a claim for house insurance. that is what your parents pay for. tell them the story and  give them the receipt number from the statement to the police..(you must  report it to the police before you can make a claim, i note your family has done that)  once its been reported ring the insurance guys up and they can go about trying to replace it for you.

goodluck

oh as the guys is still a minor not much will happen to him.  it would be pointless suing him in a small claims court under torts because he is a minor you would be technically be suing him through his parents.  you say they are crazy but do they have money?  if not its pointless.  because an ipod is usually under 300 dollars (aus) i don't see the point in suing him but if you choose to do so be prepared it will cost you money in court fees and document preperation.  The most the police would do i would think is send him to a juvenile detention centre (dependant if it was his first offence or not)  still i dont know your laws in america. (im australian)  just keep updated with the police and hang in there.  its  a crap thing you are going through .

honestly, i don't even care about getting him in trouble. i'm not out for revenge or anything. i just want my ipod back, ya know?

totally understand.. i once had 30 cds stolen from me from a hotel room .. some randoms were invited and took alot of cds .. i got some of them back the others i never found and they were special imports from the states . cost me 40 dollars a cd and i was missing about 15 of them  and i was only 18 then so not happy.  i do hope you get your ipod back or at least a replacement. do try and get the insurance thing sorted .

yeah, i am really hoping the insurance thing works. it doesn't look like he's going to fess up any time soon. :'(
