Depends on whether or not it's a zombie apocalypse, because, as you observed, fat people would immediately have a problem with rule #1.
In a post-nuclear kind of thing where food gets really scarce, I would think body fat would be an advantage, unless that simply makes them more attractive prey when people start turning to cannibalism.
If it's a post super virus thing, it wouldn't be a matter of body size but of the immune system. But, again, it falls to the cardio thing - kind of hard to escape all the predator animals that break free from the zoo even if you're in good shape.
I dont think its a matter of fat or skinny surviving, i think its more an issue of preparedness.
Cause fat people can't get cold...
Athletic people
The smart will survive. Not those that can solve differential equations but those that can find, fix and start combustion engines, those that are able to filter water to a potable condition, the McGyvers among us. I shall seek out Cajun. Together we will rule the world.
You'll need me too bucky. I know a lot about growing stuff and animal husbandry.
:P we'll create our own little chatter commune.

If it happens in the near future we'd have a head start repopulating!

Of course if it's gonna be a commune, we'll need Melkor:P
of course we will, he's the official babysitter.
Bebeh! Eeeeh!
*ahem*
I mean,....
see, I knew he'd be thrilled.

I was very upset when zombies learned to run (when was that the late 90s?), I liked it better when they were slow. Cardio wise I am not ideal but if they don't run or I only need short bursts I should be ok :P
I have a stocked med bag in my room (have first aid knowledge and my mother is a medic (so a quick few tips for combat wounds)) and I know where make shift weapons are (and probably have gall to use them on the undead, I am not gone to lie, I have a bit of a violent streak in me :P), yes, I thought about it cause both my ex and my brother had/have the zombie survival guide book.
My cousin's (both in the military as well) are a bit of the always prepared (their father is a paranoid ex US Marine) so if I am able to get to them they have guns and hunting skills.
I may not out last it all but I think I have a good chance for a while :P
If the apocalypse happens, the first part of survival is actually location. If it happens where you are, you are mostly screwed. If it happens else where and you have to deal with the after effect, then the better prepared people will survive.
For me I see it as multiple phases.
Phase 1: Surviving whatever impact. Beside luck by location, it's all about your emergency preparedness such as food and water storage. Except for a few of us who are extremely prepared (I'm not). This is the a critical phase. If we are handy at all, we should be able to round up enough stuff to survive 1-3 months. If you round up enough stuff to survive 3 months, you perish. This is the period where we may be attack by unorganized violent groups who want to take our stuff. For me, I'm pretty confident me and my family will survive this phase if we don't get killed by the event.
Phase 2: Surviving 1st year. In the first 1-3 months you have, you have to find food and water for the 1st year. This is when the skill for hunting of animals for finding storage inadvertently left by others in warehouse, factory will help you survive. Other skills for establishing safe dwelling, planting crop for long term survival will come in handy. This is also a dangerous time as well because this will be the period people would be most likely attack by well organized marauders. The marauders lack the knowledge and skills for actually creating things for survival, but the possess the violence capacity to take things from others. For me, I give us a fair chance but nothing is certain.
Phase 3: If the crop hold, and the fauna and flora around you recover then long term survival move to the next phase of surviving the next apocalypse. This is when communes have to get larger. People have to find one another to procreate etc..
Lots to think about eh.
It may just boil down to some kind of genetic abberation. A blotch on your DNA that becomes beneficial.. In other words, dumb luck.

Very true.

* Wonders if he has that "one weird trick" stored away properly.
*marvels at the thought of all fat people waddling and all skinny people being cold all the time*
the answer is me (apparently, i am 42). i would survive.
Would I want to survive is the real question, the answer is No, but I'd live just to spite myself.
Yes they can. When I was 275 I refused to leave the ice cream case. I froze my ass off.
Pretty sure I'd only survive because Tb would protect her babysitter ;)
