How can vodka have calories?

alcohol is a kind of sugar molecule, actually

it has more calories per gram than regular sugar (or carbs)

Same place that beer and wine calories come from.  It takes grapes to make wine, and hopps and barley to make beer.  All have calories.  Wish it wern't true. Surprised

Where I come from, vodka doesn't have calories.  You just have to have about three shots of it to convince yourself.

I know the calories in beer at least come almost exclusively from the insane amount of sugar that goes into the brewing process. I assume that it's the same for wine. With (red) wine the grapes just provide the stuff that's actually good for you.

 Most of the calories in beer come from the alcohol (which is a type of sugar) but not the sugar used for brewing.  The sugar used in brewing, which comes from the grains used, is broken down by the yeast into alchol and CO2.

Just for the record, alcohol is not a type of sugar molecule. I'm not sure where this came from, but a lot of people seem to think this is the case.

Ethanol is a carbohydrate.

Ethanol would require another oxygen to be a carbohydrate (HOCH2-CH=O). Its not a carbohydrate, its an alcohol.

You're correct that the starches and grains which go into beer are converted to alcohol. This only accounts for an ABV of 3-5% however. In most beers (actually in all beers I drink), this percentage is raised by adding brewing sugar. In fact, only very light (in the marketing term) beers aren't augmented with sugar. Scroll down about halfway to where it describes the way in which sugar allows beer to reach up to 20% ABV. Needless to say, the amount of sugar needed to raise the content that much would be extreme, but even in beers like this:

which is one of my favorites, reaches in excess of 300 calories per 12 fl. oz. due to the added sugar.

EDIT: Should have mentioned that all beer does have sugar in it, but the light beers don't use it to augment ABV. Wouldn't want anymore confusion haha...

There are lots of things that can be added during the brewing process to increase alcohol content, sugar is one of them, additional grains and fruit are other options, I've made beers with over 7% abv without adding any sugar.

Regardless, any sugar added is going to be converted to alcohol during fermentation so the calories are from alcohol instead of sugar (unless alcohol is a sugar, i quit chemistry well before organic)

guess i should turn in my bachelor's degree because i got an A in that class? Cry

i just looked at some nutrition labels for rum, vodka and gin and they all say 1 oz. has 0 fat, 0 carbs, 0 protein and 64 calories -- so no wonder a person would question why it has calories... 

Why aren't labels required to list alcohols separately if they don't fall under the other macro-nutrient categories?

i stand corrected - an alcohol is not a sugar, nor a carbohydrate

but in the class i took, we drew the molecules of alcohol at each stage of the metabolic process and referred to them as carbohydrates and sugars (interchangeably) - so either my professor was incompetent, or terminology has changed in the recent past *shrug*

The calories in vodka are offset by the calories used to burn up brain cells -  so really it's probably a negative caloric effect...

at least that's what I'm telling myself.

(maybe off topic):  what is a sugar alcohol?  is that what we're talking about here?   i know that people who count carbs also count sugar alcohols....
