How do you wax your face without destroying everything?

Quote  |  Reply

So, tonight was my third attempt at waxing my face (i have pcos, so i have hair issues).   The first two times I managed to make a little progress, but got speckles of wax all over the bathroom and dropped the entire bottle of wax remover down the drain (nice, huh?).  Tonight I thought I'd be a little more careful, so I put on some rubber gloves, layed down some papers towels, and tried to be as coordinated as possible.........and as usual, the night turned into a horrible disaster.

Within 10 minutes I realized that this whole waxing thing just wasnt working, so I decided to start "cleaning up".   I had all the waxing accessories put away and just as I started screwing the lid back on the bucket of hot wax, the bucket popped out of my hands, flew up in the air, turned upside down, and doused my entire bathroom with hot wax.

It was 2 in the morning at the time, so I kind of had to wing it as far as finding the appropriate cleaning supplies.  I spent over an hour sitting on the bathroom floor with a butterknife, some loofas, face exfoliant, hydrogen peroxide, and hand soap, scraping hot wax off my bathroom counter and floor.

All in all, I managed to destroy:

1 butterknife

2 loofas

2 of my moms lipsticks

1 of my moms lipliners

1 roll of toilet paper

1 bottle of deoderant

1 tube of toothpaste  and

1 flip flop

Basically, what the f is my problem and how do I do this?Embarassed

Lol!

i hate home waxing. i never do it. Ive had irregular periods, exorcist style ones, then absent ones, from when i started at age 10. i was diagnosed with pcos at age 15. Ive been bleaching the hair on my face since about 11 because its so noticeable, and i get full body waxing every couple of weeks. LAST night however, as a treat, i bought my first epilator; Braun Rechargeable Wet&Dry expressive. in the tub, it got rid of ALL my hair on my legs, arms, tummy and chest!! WOW

MY advice would to be; find a good bleach for your face , (i use Veet, or Jolen)

Stick to Professional waxing on larger areas of your body

Prevent regrowth with a good epilator, and also use it on places you just dont want to wax (my new one i can use in the bath, which means you cant even feel it pulling the hair out...its a revelation!)

btw ive tried EVERYTHING....IPL at age of just 17, didnt work even though im deathly pale with black thick hair, depilatory creams, etc.

good luck! hope u find what works for u x

I don't have any suggestions on the specific matter of facial waxing, but if it makes you feel any better, your description is a pretty accurate characterization of me attempting to do anything.  I shouldn't even be allowed to own nail polish given the number of my mother's possessions (and assorted household items) I managed to destroy as a teenager.

Im the same way.  Im 20 years old and my family members still get nervous when I walk down the aisles in the stores that carry wine bottle, dishes, or any other breakable.   Apparently, Im still not allowed to touch glass.Tongue out

I found my soul sister in klutziness! Usually I also get it on my clothes and glasses, but its actually not too hard to get it off of those things!

First, make sure you are using the best wax for the face. The bad stuff often either leaves behind lots of little pieces or hurts like *&% to get it off, if you can even pull it off at all. After much trial and error, I think ZIP is by far the very best (I've been using it for over 15 years, from face to bikini and anything in between!) Its become really hard to find in drugstores lately, so I've just started ordering online at either Drugstore.com or Amazon and ordering a few at a time to take advantage of free shipping (prices are similar and good, with the main difference being in the size of the product they offer).

Basically I just break off a few chunks of the bar (think a thick Hershey bar), and put it in an old coffee mug. I then put the coffee mug in a pan filled with as much water as possible and slowly heat it up until the wax melts. Just let it cool down a few minutes before applying to skin, especially the face. You don't need anything other than the popsicle stick like applicator they include in the box, as its really easy to just grab an edge once on your face and pull it off that way.

I then just keep reusing the same mug each time and its been my own little mini waxing station, much cheaper than then going professionally regularly.

I usually use it at night, and there may be some immediate redness, but as long as you wait until its not scalding hot, its always fine the next morning!

Good luck!

Coupla thoughts:

1.  Try mineral oil to clean up the spilled wax.  And get a putty knife!

2.  Try a sugar-based "wax."  Moom makes a great product.  It is water-soluble, so you can clean up any spills with a wet rag.

Have you tried those prewaxed strips? (there are many brands)  They work pretty well and there is no mess at all.

I agree with clairelaine. I use prewaxed stips. You rub them between your palms to warm up the wax. Peel them apart and place above your lip. Then you just rip them off. No mess! Some brands even give you mineral oil towelettes to remove any residue on your skin. I use Nair or the Veet brands. They are very quick and easy. I love them!

Thanks for all the replies.  I think Im just going to use the waxing strips.  I didnt even know they made those.

Also, ktjo, what exactly is an epilator?

I've never included a link in a post before, but hopefully this helps with your epilator questions:

Lol, this made me laugh!! I've had some pretty awful waxing experiences as well. I have given up on trying to do it myself and just dish out the money to get it done professionally. I highly recommend it - they know exactly what they are doing and it's usually very quick.

And I used to have an epilator, but it wasn't for me. It gave me awful ingrown hairs and I had to throw it away. Just beware!!

And good luck :)

if your used to waxing, epilators are a breeze! i actually laughed cuz i thought it tickled. thought i was a freak, used it on my moms arm, SHE started laughing lol?  ive heard horror stories about the epilators of old, but this one i just wanted to share cuz if you have excess Body hair especially, then i think its really worth looking into the Braun wet&dry one.

btw its basically loads of little rotating tweezer heads that quickly grasps the hairs and pulls it out at the root as it passes! :) i think you can always avoid ingrown if you exfoliate every other day and just dont go against the direction of growth....same applies when your waxing.

good luck on the strips tho; they never worked for me my 'tache was too strong lol! if that doesnt work for u either, try bleach!x

hmm. i might have to try an epilator.  are they generally expensive?  im going to look them up now.

well yes, this one is. its the only one that can be used in the tub/shower as well as dry.

i'm in ireland and here it cost 111 euros. really im a skeptic and very careful about wasting money on stuff, after the laser therapy and burning my skin with home depilatory creams. this thing is fantastic...i suppose the only thing is whether you have a Very low pain threshold, then itll take some getting used to. i looked up reviews on amazon before i bought it! x you can barely even feel it when you use it in a nicenwarm bath!

i was reading some reviews online and it says that most of the epilators are pretty loud.  Is yours?  Im moving into the dorms this fall and I'd like to be somewhat discrete.  I'd hate to be the girl that gets caught ripping hair out of her face, lol.

oh gota admit, it IS loud, yes! but im sure they would have to be pretty damn weird to judge u on using a device to remove hair that makes noise....its like judging someone for using an electric toothbrush! maintenance is maintenance i say! and its not the type of sound that cud possibly be misconstrued as a vibrator by the way lol! Its not a vibing, more mechanical sounding. i will say, my friends all use one and they all sed make sure you get a GOOD one. a bad one is a nightmare (apparently). hence my amazon search!

Epilator hurts... or it hurt for me. I tried it on my legs (my mom does her legs with one), my upper lip (BAD IDEA! @_@), and the sides of my face (stung alot...very ouchie). I use those veet creams on my upper lip and normal wax on my face. I have one that you microwave and then rub it on with the stick...put the paper on, rub and pull off. It's a tiny container by Sally Hansen.

Lol, the Sally Henson one is the one that I destroyed everything with!  Epilators are kind of expensive, so i may have to hold off on buying one and just get some prewaxed strips.

Awww hehehe. Well I also have this. It sucks for most things but it pulls the extra hairs (side of face, chin for me) out with no problem. Feels like an epilator kinda, but it hurts less because it pulls out less hair at once. Feels like super fast plucking. I didn't dare try it on my upper lip. :P

You shouldnt use epilator on your face!I think manufacturers even advise you not to do it  Stick to wax or bleaching.

By the way, Im 31 but my entire family sits on the edge of their seats when I carry out something from the dinner table. It drives me mad as I hardly ever break anything in public- I prefer trashing my own bathroom quietly on my own Laughing

I've never waxed my face - but I'm a huge fan of cold wax that is water soluble. I heat it up in the mircowave for smoother application.

Water soluble as mentioned above is such easy clean up that I don't even worry about the mess I make everywhere. And when my hands get tacky I just rinse them under warm water and its a fresh start!

Don't use gloves with wax or you will lose a lot of dexterity and end up spilling more things!

Also: the next time you try to do this you should videotape your destruction.  I'd like a youtube video. This sounds like a hilarious new sport to watch.  :)
