I was just noticing in my grocery cart how colorful the fruits and vegetables are compared to the other stuff they put out in the store...it is so easy this time of year to get really nice mandarin oranges, apples, figs, grapefruit, pompergrante, and raw nuts in shell...it is wise to choose the fruits and veggies in season...in our chase...what is shipped to the grocery store.
Now x-mass is over I find it a good time to buy those turkeys and put them in the freezer for later...I find that I make so many meals from one bird...soup, use turkey breast, ground up turkey burgers...some get used to make dog treats...non is wasted...all is eaten.
I also make sure that there is a lot of green in my cart for salads, not to forget those other veggies; radishes, onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, mushrooms, carrots, broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower are some of my veggies...all add nutrients in our diet and it all starts at the grocery store where we make our food choices...
Now how good a job do you do at the grocery store? What percentage is vegetables to meat? How much is processed? How much is the stuff in a bag or box? Are your choices really good...or not?
The next time you go grocery shopping at the store...think....are you meeting your goals there before you go home...or not?

Anyways since the holiday is over and I went to the doctors last week for bloodwork (dibetic) I lost 6 lbs since Oct. not much but better than a gain during holidays. The doctor called this morning and said my glucose level is good but work on my colestrol , the bad ones are little high. I'm heading out shopping today. My hub has been doing shopping and he doesn't but veg/fruits and and cooks too many sweets. I love turkey, and going shopping for some good stuff.

When I grocery shop my cart is about 2/3 veggies. The rest is breads, limited meat, and some dairy. I buy rice and pasta in bulk, so those are already in the pantry. I get a certain sort of satisfaction when I check out and it's mostly veggies! It's amazing how few processed foods you "need" when you put your mind to it. Now, if I could just get my cheese intake down...a definite weak spot!

Clovers count as ruffage. Especially on hats.
It changes from time to time, but the mainstays for my grocery cart - coffee, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes, salmon, eggs, lime juice, canned tuna.
Overflowing with fruits and veggies!
What ever produce is on sale that week, high fiber cereal (raisin bran, mini wheats, wheat chex or grapenuts usually), almond/soy milk, coffee, tomato products, veggie broth (I love to make soups), many others I can't think of right now.

Lunch meats (for husband)

The diet orange soda I like to drink with my lunch and dinner. Water is so boring to drink with meals. I drink water all day anyway.
I know, no veggies. I hate veggies. I just... really hate veggies. I've tried all kinds of ways to eat them, and I just hate them. I DO love veggie soups like minestrone. I need to buy a crockpot to make soup at home (I don't have a stove top).
Do mushrooms count as a vegetable?

As for me, it really depends on what we (my fiancé and I) feel like having and how much time we have for cooking (he works and I'm a full time student), but it usually contains chicken, at least one kind of red meat, eggs, milk, yoghurt, butter, salmon, nuts, different spices, some kind of fruit (for me) and a whole bunch of cookies, soda and crisps (for him). The rest depends on what we're having - I guess things "typical" for us are tomato sauce, mustard, pesto, some kind of cheese, beans, potatoes, bell peppers, chilli peppers, onions, garlic, mushrooms, rice (preferably brown), whole grain bread and pasta etc.
I know that I almost never get enough veggies and I'm working on it.

Uhhh...my grocery cart? Goes a little like this: raspberries (golden and red), grapefruit (yuck!), almond milk, yogurt, feta, spinach, pre-mixed salad, avocado, coffee creamer, sweet potatoes, frozen veggies, baby carrots, broccoli, beans (canned, kidney, red, soup mix), extra sharp cheddar, 35-cal bread, Nature's Own sammich thins, strawberries (if they're around), GRAPES, yellow, red, orange, green bell peppers, chocolate milk.
My roommate's grocery list goes thusly: a bajillion frozen dinners, Red Baron froen pizzas, cracked black pepper chips, pita chips, whatever cookies and candy catches her eye, Goldfish, canned soup, beer, soda.
Ask me how good I am at staying away from the things that she picks up? I kind of feel like she sabotages my weight loss efforts (but keeps me from going overboard), but I'm keeping her from malnutrition (but she finds me pretentious). Together, we manage to barely keep each others' heads above water.
But how weird is it that neither of us eat meat? O.o i just kind of realized that. I mean, she does eat meat, but only at restaurants. Huh.
hm... last time I went shopping it was something like this:
- all-natural almond butter
- assorted larabars
- whole wheat bread
- oatmeal from the bulk bins
- unsalted sunflower seeds from the bulk bins
- winter squash (butternut, buttercup, acorn, etc.)
- stevia (usually truvia brand)
- diet pop (I know, bad)
- plain yogurt (full fat or 2%)
- apples (fuji, pink lady, granny smith)
- boost drinks- high protein

- 1 kilo dried beans, mixed
- Bag of apples

Should last me at least a little while. Not a lot of interesting things in there.
I generally do well at the store -- very little processed foods, and have been reducing meat portions for a while now. We've just come out of some financial struggles and during that time I switched back to plain English muffins as they were cheaper, and away from a couple of other healthiest options, but still stayed as fresh as possible. Honestly my biggest struggle is not the grocery store or meal preparation, it's all the other options that are out there! (extra food sitting around at work; potlucks at church; meals out at restaurants; etc.) Working on getting on track over this holiday break so hopefully having a streak going will motivate me to do well when I go back to work.
- whatever produce is in season and/or on sale (top choices would be peppers, beets, carrots, kale, spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, sweet potatoes, bananas and cantaloupe)
- whatever dairy substitute is on sale (almond milk, coconut milk and Silk soymilk are my faves - unsweetened only)
- cocoa powder (a must-have item, no matter how bloody expensive it is!)
- Tetley herbal teas (especially "Dream" and "Warmth")
- shredded unsweetened coconut
- whatever bulk nuts, seeds and grains are on sale (usually flax, sesame, sunflower, sliced almonds)
- some kind of protein (veggie dogs, veggie sausages, canned tuna, canned sardines)
...yeah, I'm a poor student. I eat what's cheap.
