Women and broad shoulders

Quote  |  Reply

I've always had wide/broad shoulders and for most of my life I've hated them. Although some men have said it's sexy, I can hardly see why.  Any women out there that feel the same way? While there are SOME advantages of a broader back, like looking more tough than we really are, on a woman, these advantages are few. Yes, I've accepted my body and am always learning to 'love' it more, but come on.... does it ever make you feel less.... feminine? I'm as fem as can be with curves (on top and bottom, but thin in the middle) but there are always those cuts or styles I can't really pull off because of this.

Anyone else feelin' like a linebacker in a dress? Guys, do you like/love it? lol. If you've got them or not, I'd love to hear your reasons for loving broad shoulders! :)

I love a broad with shoulders, otherwise there's no place for the arms to attach.

Haha, well I'm glad I'm not the only one. Honestly when I'm at my thinnest, I feel the most empowering because of them. And when I see broad shoulders on a thin woman I can definitely see why a lot of people love them. But....  since I tend to store meat on my arms (people have told me I have strong "looking" arms) and I'm far from "thin", I have to be very careful or else I will feel like a giant at 5'2 haha. They can actually make me appear larger/chunkier than I really am.

One thing I have to say is that most of the guys I've ever dated have always noted my strong wide back and that it is sexy. But I think it's amusing that the guys that commented on my post don't even realize that it plays a part in the visual. Thanfully that's a good thing.

Hopefully I can get to comfortable weight where I'm not so conscientious about them. Tops I tend to stay away from are capped sleeves and anything strapless (unless it has an embellished or sweetheart neckline),

I LOVE my broad shoulders...........from the front (- I actually think they are one of my best features). However, it is the broad back that goes with them that I have problems with. When wearing a strappy top, I am OK with the back (mostly) because you can see the muscle definition so I know no one is going to mistake me for being fat. However, in clothes, my upper back just looks "meaty", masculine and a bit fatty (in my opinion anyway).

I look like a girl walking towards you, but a bloke whilst walking away.

I deal with it. But would prefer it was otherwise. But it is not going to happen.

This is my point EXACTLY. I love broad shoulders, especially ones that go with defined clavicles, but the wide back is the part that makes me FEEL like a linebacker.  I play tennis, so as long as it shows my bare back, it usually makes up for the broadness.

My broader shoulders look best when I'm at a low weight.   When I'm not thin I don't appreciate them as much.

I think models have broad shoulders, and they look best on thin people!

But think about it hips look more narrow.

Yes! That's why I HAVE to show that I have a waist, with a belt or something, otherwise no one would see hips. Lol.

I like my broad shoulders for the most part...halter dresses look amazing.

I don't like wearing polo shirts...with my broad shoulders and small breasts I look like a man.  I also have a problem with any time of off-the-shoulder shirts and sweaters...they're too small and I can't wear them properly.  I also have a broad torso (and small breasts) so any zip-up dresses I have to go one size up for it to zip.

:o)

I empathize with buying dresses in particular. I can remember going down to a size 6 but still having to buy a size 8 because dresses wouldn't fit over my shoulders otherwise!

pff, I love my broad shoulders. the only problem i encounter is that some women's t-shirts (especially babydolls and puff-sleves) are too tight at my biceps and shoulders, and too loose at the bust (not much there :P). oh well.

how wide are your shoulders...?  im 15.5 inches wide...

I just wanted to agree w/the small shoulder crowd in saying that I think broad shoulders are awesome. My shoulders actually dramatically slope downward, so EVERYTHING falls off of them. It makes me uneven and look a lot larger than i actually am.

I have a friend who is described to a T by all of your descriptions of yourselves. Broad shoulders, very curvey, defined waist. She's a beautiful true-blue German, and as I'm almost all German myself, I think she got the good gene-pool when it comes to that (; Now, shes complained to me about her shoulders before, but when I make her really look at mine, she shuts up (;

Well there's my mini-rant-- shoulders in my opinion aren't that big a deal anyway. Just gotta work with what your momma gave you, ehh?

God Bless <3

I think I'm born somewhat with a smaller bones. I'm 5'7 but my wrist size, waste sizes are small. I wear size 2 for pants and 2 for shirts (s or xs). However, whenever it comes to a jacket or a blazer I need to wear size 6 or else my shoulder gets stuck. While I wear size 6 for my shoulder(this barely fits), most blazers have too much space in my body area. I'm NOT muscular or anything, but just look really thin, almost anorexic, nothing sexy. So I don't think anyone thinks of me as "looking tough". I honestly don't see anything good about it, because at least for me the proportion of the shoulder and waist/hip is dramatically large and looks like an alien from the back, a large triangle. I guess that shape is desirable in men, but definitely not in women if you have a really broad shoulder but really small waist.

I have little shoulders and a small frame. My mom has wide/broad shoulders and a large frame. We look about the same size, but she's thicker/wider than me, and she always gives me her old sweaters because they get too tight across her back and shoulders.

I've read in fitness magazines that women should strive for a "V-taper"-- ie build up your shoulders and back-- because apparently it makes your waste look smaller. While, I understand where that is coming from... eh, just not my thing. I would look silly with big shoulders on my little 5'2 frame.

I'm the same way! I have broad shoulders and wide hips, but a relatively small waist. It does make me look curvy, but it also makes me feel very out of place with other girls my age, who still have very skinny, lanky bodies which are quite childlike. I really wish my shoulders were smaller :(  ...but, maybe it won't seem as bad when I'm older, as they DO give me that hourglass look :)

I've always had broad shoulders and a broad back. I both love it and hate it. I like it because it gives me a more hour-glass like figure.  I hate it because it makes it virtually impossible for me to fit into button-up shirts and dresses. I always have to get a dress that fits me at the top, leaving it all loose and ill-fitted at the waist and below.

Both a blessing and a curse.

Broad shoulders and muscular back = a win in my book.

I find low, drooping shoulders and a weak back extremely unattractive.

I'm jealous.  I have small shoulders and never can keep bra straps from falling off.  Anyway, broad shoulders make your trunk look smaller, right?

I have broad shoulders , broad hips and am 5'8'' tall, and don't think any of it looks feminine , but...what am I going to do about it...not a D#$%#$ thing!

I do have a husband, so he must not mind too much  Smile

I love my wide shoulders.  I cannot understand at all why you wouldn't like them???  They are sexy as hell and make your waist look tiny.

My shoulders and hips are about equal though.  I have broad square shoulders and I love to show them off.

I find wide shoulders are the bomb. Grateful for all the shopping bags you can carry from the car to the house without going twice, like a boss.

Plus the older you get the less likely you going to have the concave body look.;)
