Why do young girls today do "duckface"?

Quote  |  Reply

'SUP? First post in a while, found a link that REALLY reminded me of CalorieCount. So yeah, been maintaining pretty much - a bit too much beer and not so skinny anymore but I'm still happy with my weight.  But anyway, I saw this site...

http://antiduckface.com/

And it finally put a name to what I had seen so many of the teen girl posters doing in their profile pics. When did it become popular to pucker one's lips like a duck for photos? And why?  Is it to emulate the collagen-mutilated celebrity plastic surgery victims?  I don't get it...

Maybe it's a failed attempt at a "sexy pout"?

Hahahahaha!

They do it because it works!

OkCupid (a dating site) has stats on this and found that girls making this face at the camera get more messages than ones that just smile. The effect is much smaller for guys.

OkCupid Blog - The 4 Big Myths of Profile Pictures

I could see that. It gives girls a naughtier image. Guys would probably look at her and think "I could get some from that" or just "damn shes hot". i know iknow im being sexist or whatever right now but im sure its true.

i think the 'tongue out' is worse...i mean honestly, i think they do it without even knowing that that means! but i do agree the duckface along with the tongue out is by no means cute or at all attractive lol.

i love how i just spent 10 minutes laughing at the stupidity of the girls on that website and then went on my own facebook photos and noticed myself doing the same face on about 5 different occasions hahah :(

my mom has a million pictures of me doing this... and the earliest one she has of me i was 7 in it and doing the same face...

i can't speak for those other people... but i can't make a fake smile (with teeth)... and i don't even like my real smile half the time (jaw locks and all that fantastic stuff)... i will close lip smile but it just looks so fake and posed.. so if i'm going to look like i'm being fake anyways.. i'll do it in the most obvious of ways lol. i also do the side smile... and the big goofy smile.. the one where you look at it and laugh because it's no longer a serious picture. if there's a picture i do think is serious or calls for a genuine smile.. i suck it up and put on my close lipped smile and hope it doesn't come across too weird lol.

I didn't even know this face had a name. ._. Looks weird to me.

Well, you learn something new every day.

omg, do i have duckface in this pic!?  i had to check out the pics to see what duckface was...  i wasn't trying to pout or anything, i was almost smiling but not quite because my daughter was being funny taking my pic.  even after observing the photos i'm not sure i have a hard/fast definition of what duckface is...

i'm so paranoid now.  do i have it!?

edit-  not that i'm a particularly "young" girl or anything...  is that something only teenagers can have?

nah... it just looks like you're smirking or trying very hard not to smile.

A lot of my friends make duckface in their pictures and I don't understand it at all. They must think it makes them look cute, more appealing, etc but I wish they would realize how ridiculous and stupid it looks!

When you smile with or without teeth, for some girls, their lips look thinner and less plump. So they resort to puckering them out to make them look bigger and plumper.

Having bigger lips also makes your face look thinner because when one facial feature looks bigger, the rest look smaller. Big, plump lips is, I think, in all cultures something every girl wants.

I could be wrong.

i think duckface is almost alway preceded by some amount of alcohol (and succeeded by...nevermind).

Hahaha it is soo unattractive.  I hate when girls who would be really sexy in a photo make that face!! WHY! :/ I like it when guys do it cause you can tell they're usually joking.  Anyway, its not hot IMO. A slight pout is hot but thats not a pout.. thats a duck. (:  This sounds terrible, but it makes me feel good about myself so I don't mind. XD

It doesn't make anyone cute or attractive.  It makes people look drunk and ready to lose their inhibitions.

****************

it is wrong in my case!!! lol.. i have very plump lips <3 i think when i do smile though.. i always tilt my head as well... or angle away from the camera...

in response to stevis... that may be true... i've seen a lot of drunk chicks doing this lol... ironically.. i don't think i've ever done it drunk.. only stone sober lmao. i don't think when i'm drunk i have the mental capability to plan my camera poses... i barely have the mental capacity to sing the songs (karaoke) let alone worry about pictures!  maybe i'm an oddball.

in response to pg... well... you're wrong on my account... about the preceding and succeeding anyways lol... but i bet you're 98% accurate in your statement anyways and it kind of made me giggle just now. giggle out loud and now i have to respond to my fiance about why i'm giggling... and he'll just tsk that i'm reading naughty forums... thanks pg... thanks lol. XD

i actually do wonder about it though... how come everyone does this face?? where do people see it? i didn't even know other people did it until this forum... and i don't recall it being in any form of media i watch or read. it shall forever be a mystery... lol. duckface is such a funny and yet accurate way to describe it.. can't wait to use the term in everyday life... might have to set someone up for it though... lol

you obviously didn't grow up in the 70s.

thin lips used to be considered attractive.  they were associated with old, white money (and old, white money was "good").  we had cheryl teigs, bo derek, and farrah fawcett.  then along came gia and changed the world.

stupid embedded links still aren't working (in chrome).  here's gia:http://www.geoclan.com/style/articles/05/imag es/gia.jpg

Ping!  I was a kid in the 70s and I'm fairly certain that because of that I also don't share the big obsession with big lips... I had a friend as a kid who hated her lips because they were plump (and today would be considered really sexy...and no doubt when she is 60 she will still have some lips left where I will just have teeth)...  I think back to all the celebs I thought were cool/attractive and none really had big lips (Jodi Foster, Kristy McNicol, Tatum O'Neil etc. etc.  and the ones you mentioned liked Farrah Fawcett--though I thought Cheryl Ladd was cuter)...

I am not heading for lip injections anytime soon....

(I just realized that Jodi/Kristy/Tatum are all lesbians and/or bisexual... OMG... wonder what it means that I choose all lesbians... ???  Laughing)

Actually come to think of the 70s in general and big boobs were not so much the rage then either... and celeb boobs pretty much looked "normal" then (i.e. regular tear dropped shaped) vs. the round globes of today (implants I guess... or all the shelf bras)....

ah... the 70s... suntans/freckles/normal boobs....

gawd I'm old...

Maybe all the girls want to be like Angelina Jolie.  I don't find her all that hot, to be honest.

Everyone should make the spirochete face
