Iron sources

Quote  |  Reply
Hi everyone, I became a vegetarian about 2 years ago due to anorexia, not for moral/environmental beliefs. I am in recovery and going really well, however I still have very bad anaemia. I have been on iron tablets for about a year and I now eat some chicken and fish. I still really enjoy lots of vegetarian protein sources like beans an legumes, eggs, tofu, etc. I try to incorporate lots of "iron rich" foods like spinach and beans but my iron levels are still really low. Just wondering if anyone had any suggestions of good foods to eat or other ways to increase iron?

I am also on iron pills..I've been a veggie for about 8 months now. I've heard that floradix is good (you can get it at health food stores). Also, when you are eating foods with iron like spinach, you have to have it with vitamin C to increase the absorption.
Iron fortified cereals. Total has 100% dv. A lot of other cereals have 40-60% as well.

It could be that you're eating enough of it, but not absorbing it well. Do you drink orange juice with your supplement? Vitamin C helps with the absorption of iron.
