Atkins is less than 20 grams of carbs per day.

Unless you want to rely on lots of soy-based products and supplementation, it's not going to work. You can be a "lower carb" vegan, but strict Atkins is likely not going to work. Vegan's arn't exactly known for their low carb meals...

You may want to consider Paleo however-- it essentially is a vegan diet, but with meat. The morals and ethics are the same though. Paleo promotes sustainable, properly raised meats/eggs, and wild game/fish. As well as lots of vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds.

I like this girl's blog about transitioning from strict vegan to paleo

**disclaimer: her health dramatically improves, shes loses weight and inches, and finds she's actually satisfied with meals

Just something to consider.

Difficult to eat low carb and be vegan, i dont even know how you would do that, I did paleo years ago, right after I graduated. Way before it got this popular as it is today. It's a good diet , I did it for almost 1 year and a half.

Try only cutting back on your carbs. Your body needs carbs for energy. The recommended about of protein in the US is way to high. Take your body weight divided by three and thats how much protein you should be eating in a day.

I would recommend reading Veganist and the China study. Both really interesting books on nutrition.

The recommended amount of carbs in the US is also way to high as well for most people. The USDA guide also recommends limited fats, and that vegetable oils and margarine are healthy. They also say that people *need* 5-12 servings of grain per day.

The point is that the USDA guidelines are crap.

I suggest you read this very thorough and detailed review of the China Study from an EX-vegan, (and then maybe while you're at it read her detailed reviews on Forks Over Knives, and Ancel Keys). This girl looks over the actual UNBIASED scientific FACTS, not the simplified version that Campbell tries to feed you.

Carmenxox- I was giving my opinion to lillys. Plus I said cut back not cut out.

Please don't comment on things I say. Im not going to sit here and have to defend myself when I was giving my honest opinion to someone who asked for it.

My apologies,

Sorry it just kinda irks me when people reference the China Study. I'll try to tone it down/.

I tend to agree with the china study. I trust a scientist more than a girl on blog. Sorry that someone else's ideas could be right.

Clearly you didn't read it with an analytical mind. There are several websites that debunk the "science" behind the China Study. Maybe science isn't the right word.. the statistical analysis. That's the one.

The China Study has many, many flaws. I invite you to actually research their methods and not just read a bunch of text like it's the bible.

We are human. No study is ever going to be perfect. Im not basing everything on this specific study. Im sorry you can't get past that there are new ways of thinking arising. It happened in the 60's and its coming back! Soon we will all know the truth. That is if you live long enough. Bahahaha I know Ill be there! VEGAN FOR LIIIIIFE!

Carmonxox also showed me this link. Again. Im going with the scientist.

lol. You wish you had my body/genes/health.

...or read it at all.

*sigh* ignorance is bliss.

...and she's not just "a girl on a blog", that's Denise Minger, and you can expect to hear a lot more of her in the next few years.

As I expect to hear more that contradicts her as well. Stay off the vegetarian forum if you aren't a vegetarian. No one wants to hear your opinion.

Oh, ouch. Are you 12?

If you want a strict vegetarian forum, find a different site.

Denise Minger who cares. China study who cares.

Listen, everyone is different. I can show studies, statistical analysis of both diets, both worlds, (meat eater and non meat eater)

So many people talk but only talk what they have read.

Have you actually tried it. I have.

I did paleo. I did vegetarian. Then went back to paleo. Then did raw vegan. Then 80 10 10. Now I'm just vegan and I don't even know how to categorize myself because I can't.

Study's, bloggers , etc etc. you have to pick and choose what resonates with to right? Well, I finally understand the meaning of follow your heart. Listen to the body.

I don't eat meat and feel amazing I eat high carb but not like 80 10 10 people. I don't eat just to eat. I listen to the body's signals. That's it.

If one day I get craving for meat then ok I'll eat meat.

You can't base your lives on study's, books, doctors, diets etc. their is no one right way.

I feel like I did it all. And vegan just makes me feel happy. Also I look younger now. Paleo was great at the beginning, Eating meat was great at the beginning Then I felt slow and I was following everything perfectly and I became obsessed with stats then I went vegetarian but the stupid way then feel back on paleo because it was a better diet then my vegetarian junk food way I guess.

Now vegan and doing it smart is like a whole new me.

Why not combine the best of both worlds? That's up to you.

Great heart-to-heart ronum.

But really none of this has anything to do with the original post.

Let's just leave it at that, and let people who have some actual advice for the OP to respond to his/her question instead of clogging up the thread with arguments and sentiment.

Why is it that people always make stupid comments like "get off the vegetarian forum if you eat meat"??? Vegetarians can post in the non-vegetarian topics, so why can't we? No one here is bashing vegetarians. No one here is being pro-meat. All carmen and I did was question the validity of the China Study. Getting all defensive and not providing any real counterarguments just shows your lack of knowledge on the subject and your ignorance.

Also, I don't see a picture of you. You think 8 packs and 6 % BF is gross? You must be an alien.
