Trying to find cheese that DOESN't contain rennet!
Which types of cheese contain rennet? where can I get cheese that doesn't contain rennet? how about cottage cheese ? how about yogurt and other dairy products? do they contain rennet?
I assume you mean calf rennet? There is also vegetable rennet and microbial rennet.
Check out this website for a list of cheeses made without calf rennet.
Thanks, Bierorama. Yes, of course. I meant animal rennet. I think microbial rennet is from animals too, right?
I read in a book that vegetable rennet doesn't necessarily mean vegan. There is a chance that the product still contains animal rennet if it is listed as vegetable rennet on the label.
so whenever I read the word " rennet", I put the item back.
Thank you for the website. very useful.
Microbial rennets are made from molds but they can contain animal by-products depending on how they were produced.
Right, vegetable rennet doesn't necessarily mean vegan. Same goes for microbial rennet.
I hope you can find something that suits your needs!
The only vegan "cheese" is one made completely of plant products, and without casein, a protein in milk that makes regular cheese melt and get that stringy, chewy texture.
I live in England, and here cheese rarely has animal rennet, with a few exceptions like parmasan. I'm not sure how you would find vegetarian cheese in America though, since as far as I an tell they don't put whether something is vegetarian on the label of most things.

Daiya rocks. Wayfare is also great, its a grain based cheese, but its a spreadable cheese that comes in many flavors called We can't say its cheese. They also make puddings, sour cream, and I think a cream cheese.
Just read the ingredients. I don't know where you're from, but where I live I barely ever have trouble finding cheese without animal rennet in it. I buy cheeses which list "vegetarian rennet" - no it may not be vegan, but if you're eating dairy then you're not a vegan anyway...?
Cottage cheese may or may not have rennet in it - you'd have to check the ingredients. Yogurt doesn't contain rennet as far as I know. However, you have to watch out for gelatine in both products. If possible I only buy brands which say explicitly that they're suitable for vegetarians.
