I want to become a vegetarian but i love meat/chicken??

Quote  |  Reply

I really want to become a vegetarian. i know i will never survive as a vegan because i adooreeee ice cream and dairy and eggs. haha. i also love desserts!

id like to become vegetarian because of the feeling i get when i eat chicken. it feels wrong. sometimes when i cook chicken (i cook for my family) its depressing. like, the animal had a life. and now im cutting through it, it makes me cringe.

whenever i try to stop eating meat i get really bad cravings. and i go nuts until i eat some chicken or something. like i crave it and crave it and nothing can get rid of the craving but chicken itself.

i wanted to start by becoming a pescavor (?? someone who wont eat meat or chicken but will eat fish) and ultimately a vegetarian.

any advice to offer?

Pescatarian (sp?) you mean?

Didn't mean to hit enter.

Anyway, you've just gotta decide for yourself what it is you want. If your reason for wanting to stop eating meat/chicken is because of humane reasons, then are those reasons enough to make you stop? Sounds like they are not, at least not thus far.

I agree, it sounds like you're not quite ready to make the jump to being vegetarian, or you may be okay with being mostly vegetarian and cutting back on the chicken to only a few times a month. I understand that eating chicken makes you feel guilty, but perhaps cutting back would be enough. Finally, it may be that when you cut back to only eating vegetarian, you're not paying enough attention to your protein intake, and the cravings are your body's way of making sure you get proper nutrition.

That all said, my suggestion would be to try lots of vegetarian versions of the things you are craving. Go to a store with a good vegetarian section and buy 3 or 4 different kinds of vegetarian chicken and turkey to try. Some you may not like, but it's possible you'll hit on something that can completely replace chicken in your diet by satisfying your cravings.

Good luck!

I would try the 90/10 approach. Eat 90 % of your days food in fruits/veg/legumes...and the other 10% in  meat/sugar ect...  just adjust to your own likes and dislikes.  I am feeling better personally by doing so..and I am not giving up my steak or bbq chicken or ribs...  lol

I was the same way and then I realized how good the fake chicken stuff was an it was easy. Granted, eating nothing but Boca isn't a good diet, but it turned me on to this lifestyle and now I have found so many new foods I love more than I ever loved chicken or steak.

I agree.  If you're not in the habit of eating a lot of vegetables, just try to eat more of them.  Do you cook?

I think catwoman, maelwys, and halzberry all had very good suggestions. Try one, try them all. Feeling emotionally good about your decisions is something to work hard for.

Your question is exactly to the question asked by a smoker ...

" I want to stop smoking but i like Smoking"  lolzz :P

Wow great responses. :) These are great tips I'm going to follow on y trip to vegetarianism. I think I'm going I continue eating chicken (small portions) until I want to cut it out. So far I've cut out red meat and it's going great :)

Chicken> easily replaced with quorn you'll be surprised how nice quorn tastes :)
I was a very hefty kid last year and refused to eat a meal if it didn't have meat in it. meat was my entire life even though it felt morally wrong and I would have never imagined myself as a vegetarian, although I've always loved animals. my health was getting worse and I needed to lose weight so one day I quit meat entirely. Obviously it was one of the hardest things I ever had to do. I didn't think I'd survive a week, and I almost didn't, but I'm still meat-free 20 weeks later!

it's only hard in the begging but after a while your body gets used to it and stops craving meat. I don't even remember the last time I was tempted by a meat product. it just takes time

I would suggest trying fake meat. I really like veggie burgers from Boca. They don't actually taste a whole lot like meat, but still very delicious! I have never had fake chicken, but It's definitely worth a try. They're sold at pretty much any grocery store in the frozen section.

I understand; I felt the same way.

As you make the transition, try different brands.  Often I prefer one brand's fake meat over another.

For example, Quorn has wonderful breaded chick'n patties.  I can't tell the difference.  Their regular chick'n - yuk (for me).

The only vegan mayonaise I like is Veganaise.  The rest are gross.

Morningstar Farms and Yves both have corn dogs, but I think Yves are the only one's worth eating (and they are good).

I don't care much for soymilk, but almond milk I'm okay with.  (so much healthier, too)

There is a new faux meat product from a company called Beyond Meat.  There have been news reports that it is literally flying off the shelves because it is so authentic tasting.  Right now, it is only available at Whole Foods in northern California, so until they widen their distribution, I'll have to wait.

Just try different products until you find some you like.  I went vegetarian overnight, but vegan, that has been a slow process and I am still not there.
